Jeremy Pope, what a star.
So happy for Brandon Uranowitz, what a talent.
Beetlejuice is fun and creative, what' the problem?
Be More Chill's fanbase will recover since they don't even know how to watch a live Broadcast of anything.
Great year!"
^This ~ LOL how true...Yea that's the funny thing about the BMC-fan base-tweens that they don't watch TV...I asked my nieces and nephews, cousins age 13-19 and they just don't. So, they won't be watching the TONYS!

I was shocked by Caitlin’s nom but I think it’s very much deserved! She truly is the heart of the show and has to ground it all to deliver a meaningful message. And she’s hilarious! I think more musical comedies need a character/performance like hers to show an actual theme. *cough cough*

In my opinion, she didn't deserve it: her performance was fine, it wasn't particularly bad, but it seemed to me like the epitome of an average performance. I would have MUCH preferred the nomination go to Rebecca Naomi Jones for Laurey in Oklahoma. I thought her performance was much more unexpected (I mean, it is this new revival of Oklahoma)."
COMPLETELY agree here. I found both Caitlin Kinnunen and her role to be entirely bland."
While i COMPLETELY disagree re Network (easily the most horrible show I saw this year), i very much agree re Kinnunen and Noblezada for that matter. Leavel's performance wasnt my cup of tea (I am on Team Block at this point, i guess, by default) but shes injecting so much personality and power and fun into her performance, I cant help but be happy for her. Kinnunen was totally adequate playing a relatively thankless, dull role.
Noblezada, too: she sang gorgeously but in a role we've seen performed a billion times. I haven't seen Oklahoma (and likely won't see Beetlejuice) but the reviews for RNJ and Caruso indicate bolder, more distinct performances. Seems like a real miss to overlook them- esp the former, who has been so wonderful in so many great projects for the better part of a decade.
As for those Oklahoma! snubs, I really like the insight I read above from whoever posted that the Tony nominators avoided the most divisive, least traditional aspects of this production: Rebecca Naomi Jones, Patrick Vail and the choreography.
Of course, surprised by lack of nom for Mockingbird; but what most surprised me was the amount of love for Beetlejuice! I really only thought it would get a few tech noms and MAYBE one for Caruso.
I didnt realize Hadestown got a nom for every category eligible for except one. Good for them! But poor Reeve! While I wasnt a fan of his performance, how awful it must be to be that lone strike out.
Thrilled for both ladies of Gary, but dont see how Kristine Neilsen wasn't considered LEADING.
I also LOVED Pope's double nom - what a day for him - and thrilled that they recognized a decent number of shows that already closed. Janet McTeer? While I thought she was good in the role, I'd forgotten all about the play!

I do wonder if supporting actress in a play is closer than I thought with both Gary ladies being in there now. I thought Celia had this all but locked up, I'm not so sure now.
I saw GARY last night and thought it was insane and brilliant. It’s hard now for me to imagine anyone but Julie White winning supporting, but all the women in that category are wonderful.

I’m glad that this year we have one dedicated thread for Tony Nominations Surprises and Stubs and members are actually sticking to that rather than starting a separate thread (unless I’ve missed them this year) for each “snubbed” show or performer. The discussions are a lot easier to keep track of (at least for me) when they all happen within a dedicated thread. Hopefully, we follow something similar after the awards are handed out.
I was just thinking the same thing. I am scared for Celia tbh. Gary got lots of love, and the industry is aware of the troubles that show had and the remarkable pressure put on the actresses, in addition to being great performers. I could totally see one of them winning. The most I can hope for is they vote split. I am afraid Mockingbird will get the cold shoulder come Tony night.
Am I the only one who is most interested in featured actress? Who do y’all think will win it? I think it’s between Ali Stroker and Amber Grey but Stroker will win in the end.

I agree here. Everyone has said Gray is a lock forever and I just disagree.

I do believe it will be a photo finish, but I still think Gray takes this in the end. I feel like there's good will from how deeply she attached herself to this show (now in her fourth production with it), AND it's a really showy part. Stroker is fantastic, but while she finds a new approach to Ado Annie, it's not a role that feels as meaty, if you will. I don't know that, if pressed, I could choose one of them that I felt was "better," but I could vote for the person who had more to do and makes a larger overall impression, and to me that's Gray. I won't be surprised if I'm wrong, but that's what my head is saying as of today!
I think it's a close race, but Stroker will take it in the end.

I always love how so many claim how close a race it will be - we'll never really know. It's not like we se the final tallies.

I definitely agree that Stroker will take it in the end! I've seen both shows, and both her and Gray are fantastic, but I think Stroker's performance is more deserving of a Tony, and I think the Tony voters are likely to see it that way as well.

That is so true, and I do this all the time. For example, I perceived it was neck and neck between Ferryman and TKAM, guess it isn't neck and neck whatsoever!
Why did BEETLEJUICE get noms? I thought it was so so awful. Artless but for the set.
I imagine RUDIN throwing things in his office. He bought out DEADLINE for the day with ads, so upon opening DL, it showed only TKAM ads, with the SNUBBED headline. Surprising, but I think goes to the disdain the community has presently for Rudin. The way he treats people, IP and art.

I would guess that the Mockingbird "snub" was more because nominators thought "well, everyone else is voting for it, I'm voting for Choir Boy/Gary." The community theatre drama was bad, but nominators liked Mockingbird enough to nominate it in almost EVERY other category. Rudin's 5 shows still got 20 noms (incl. Best Play and Best Revival).
His producing style can be egotistical, and NOBODY's bad behavior is excusable. But his productions are high-quality, he treats/pays actors extremely well, and he's also one of the few people producing new plays consistently. He can lure stars back to Broadway like Glenda Jackson, Elaine May, Bette Midler, Chris Rock, Sally Field, and Denzel, and he's also giving movie opportunities to theatre people like Lila Neugebauer, Stephen Karam, Sam Gold, Alesha Harris, and Sarah Burgess. And those are all really good things for the theatre community.
The TKAM snub is laughable. Its such an obvious attempt at making some sort of statement, its pathetic. And while I dont doubt Scott Rudin is difficult/obnoxious/tough, he brings fantastic works to the stage, gives opportunities and cash to many of the people we all support/love. The idea that Tony nominators would "punish him" (or Sorkin for an obnoxious interview) while they recognize the actors, director, music, production elements, etc., is simply childish and hurts the authenticity of the Tonys, not TKAM (which will continue to do gangbusters with New Yorkers based on ecstatic word of mouth, who could care less about this sorta thing).
I'm rooting for DeShields (but thought Page was terrific)
Sondheim? Yes. (And I wish I'd done the same - as did many of my students.)
