I have to hard disagree on Kinnunen not deserving a nom. I thought she was wonderful and projected strength and vulnerability in equal measure, taking us on a very realistic journey through her character getting caught up in events that were taken out of her control. And I don't even know that if she missed, Caruso would have been next most likely as more people were predicting Rebecca Naomi Jones in that slot.

It's interesting--though it scored 8 nominations, missing out on Featured Actor and Leading Actress makes me think Oklahoma was sliiiiighty less strong with the nominators than I anticipated. I'm eager to see how things shake out with the actual awards as I suspect Chavkin vs. Fish might be one of the tightest races of the year.

RippedMan said: "Did I misread, or was Nathan Lane snubbed? Seems odd as they loved the other 2, but maybe just a tight category."

He was and really it's kind of a slap because both the actresses in the show were nominated. Add to that all the technical nominations and the Best Play nom and he is the only one of the "big" players in the show to be left empty handed today. It was a pretty tight category so it's not a shock to be as he's been left out of things before but I think it's more shocking to me that BOTH the actresses in the show are in. It might not seem as big a snub if only one of the two got in.

Also, just watched Kiss Me Kate's Today Show performance and man.... that awkward moment when you realize that Corbin Bleu is sitting in the background on camera the whole time they are chatting about the nominations with Ohara and having to keep a smile on his face and then perform for the cameras as well. I think perhaps his snub might be the one that hurts me most in my heart.

Say it louder.

I finally saw it but I didn't post a review since there's already 400 on here. After seeing it I'm happy for the nominations. It wasn't THAT bad [to me]. It was fun, campy, cheesy, and didnt take itself too seriously. Alex deserved his leading actor nomination and the set nom was obvious. While the score isn't Sondheim level, the songs are on the same level as The Prom which everyone cant stop raving about.

Scarlet Leigh said: It's a decent show (also why didn't it get a orchestrations nomination, that's the real snub) but I get a bad impression of some showspersonally that are okay, good, or even decent, that have toxic fanbases that get up in my face on social media over how perfect, wonderful, and untouchable that show is. Not against the SHOW itself but against thatTOXIC part of the fanbase. That chunk that is currently raging on twitter and tumblr over this being and talking about how everything else is some kind of lesser work of theatre because it was all nominated over BMC.............

Gotcha.  That is fair.  This is really the only online/social media element that I check regularly in addition to actual theater news, so I can't speak to the way the fanbase behaves on Tumblr etc.  Even though it's hard, I hope people cut them a little bit of slack.  I assume most of them only have one horse in the race, and heck, they may not have even been exposed to all that much theater.  I hope they don't think of this as some sort of outlier -- like, that it's the only show or type of show they could ever love.  Otherwise, what I view as the long-term advantage of shows like this (the potential to bring in new and possibly lifelong theater fans) isn't really true.

I feel like a lot of the SHOCK over Beetlejuice is that people still look at it as the hot mess that it was out of town. Yet the more I think on it, the more Best Musical makes sense over Cher Show (which is entertaining and fun but heavily flawed book) and Be More Chill (which is a rarity in that it's pretty original even based on a book but overall as standard as standard comes) because Beetlejuice had a WOW factor in it's set and design. All the folks that I know that have seen it in it's current state say mostly the same thing. Basically, "Glad I saw it because the set and effects were out of this world but I'm not never gonna listen to the music again." So for me it's Best Musical nomination is not the shocker... the fact that it got nominated for Best Score is the real shocker especially with so many play scores in the running this season. I really thought Choir Boy was gonna slip in there.

Also, sidebar, I'm with you on The Prom. I'm not wowed but it and was not gonna be shocked to see it cut in some places today yet knew it wasn't gonna be cus it got raves which.... I'm still a little confused over months later.

Interesting that we've got multiple musicals set in high schools on Broadway that seem written for completely different audiences. Be More Chill seems the most high school friendly of the group. Mean Girls will take ages to get there, The Prom is geared toward an older, camper audience and Dear Evan Hansen's subject matter won't fly in most schools. BMC's creators just need to cut the sex and alcohol for a school licensed version and they'll clean up.

Be More Chill is already available for licensing. Has been since it's original ORIGINAL production in Jersey. One of the other reasons it's really reached so many High School aged kids it that it's played a lot already in High Schools across the country.

Which come to think of it.... I never considered this to be a factor that could be hurting the show. I mean just looking right now at their upcoming productions page between now and the end of 2019 there are OVER 20 productions of Be More Chilled across the country playing. And not JUST in High Schools. First off, most new shows wait on the rights but these have been out for awhile but then if you look at a revival, most of the time they put a temporary freeze on rights while they are launching a big new production. I mean with BMC, there are productions as close as Philadelphia, PA coming up in May of this year. Not professional productions mind you but certainly cheaper ways to see the show without needing to travel as far.

I wasn't surprised to see Beetlejuice pick up so many nominations, and I think they're almost all deserved. What I was surprised about what how much I enjoyed that show after this site made it sound like the Worst Show Ever Made. Still scratching my head about where all of that hate came from... personally I thought it was super entertaining, and miles above Cher Show and Be More Chill in terms of overall achievement. (Clearly the nominating committee did too.) Not my favorite show of the season, but I really enjoyed it. And I'm still scratching my head about how they did one of the effects, so props to that team for their staging magic.

I'm bummed for Sophia Ann Caruso who was a perfect Lydia, but I don't know who I'd take out of that list to give her a spot. Same thing with Nathan Lane - I think in both cases their exclusion is less a reflection on their performance and more just that the categories were overcrowded. Such is the unfortunate nature of awards.

Interesting that most people on here had written off Ain't Too Proud. Also surprised Jarrod Spector didn't get in for Cher.

Also, I didn’t think Caitlyn deserved a nom. It’s an incredibly boring character played in the most basic, boring ways. She starts the show as an awkward teenager and evolves into... an awkward shy teenager. And her vocals weren’t impressive the way Sophie Ann’s were.

Sad Kritzer got shut-our as she was the stand-out for me. And Brightman was one of the most grating performances.

Surprised to see Miller left off Best Actor as he seems to be the performance everyone was raving about?

Fine I'll say it. Why wasn't Michela Diamond nominated? I want to see the best goes on on Tonys night.

THANK YOU! Oh okay thank god I am not the only one that feels like this! I didn't want to be the one to go there cus there seems to be a lot of hate for The Cher Show or at least indifference. I didn't want to see the show but I went for my mother who wanted to and was insanely impressed by Michela Diamond. I would dare to even say.... she was my favorite of the 3 Chers. Yes, even more then SJB.

And while this door is open, I might as well walk in it. I think that in many ways I was not as impressed with SJB because of how great Diamond was as Babe. So much so that when I then saw Hadestown a few days later I shocked myself in thinking that.... I liked Eva Noblezada performance in Hadestown better then SJB's performance in The Cher Show. There! I said it! And man.... it feels good to have that out in the open. Oh hey look, here come the pitchforks and torches.

Pretty Woman is sad today but because their show is so awful, I am sure everyone understands.

Jeremy Pope, what a star.

So happy for Brandon Uranowitz, what a talent.

Beetlejuice is fun and creative, what' the problem?

Be More Chill's fanbase will recover since they don't even know how to watch a live Broadcast of anything.

Great year!

Totally agree with all of this - Michaela Diamond was the star of the Cher Show for me. Though I don't necessarily disagree with the Featured Actress in a Musical list, so I'm not sure who she would replace. (If I was going to replace one it'd be Lilli Cooper... who did a great job with her role, it's just not that exciting a role. But I'd put in scene-stealing Leslie Kritzer before Diamond... or ideally both of them to have 6 noms.)

I think Cher show messed up by having 3 Chers. Should have just been SJB. And make it a tour-de-force kind of part.

Laurie Metcalfe has been nominated for an acting Tony award for four straight years (winning two)... Is that a record (For an acting award regardless if its musical or play, lead or featured)? (And she is sure to nab a fifth for Virginia Wolff next year!)

Add me to the list of WTF reaction to Mockingbird being omitted (and to a lesser degree Network). I am not versed in the issue with getting the rights to the property, but was it heinous enough to omit what I thought was the best play of the season.

And I know there are snubs every year (and more than one, like this year), but really?
