Are they saying it's ruined because it's a little boy, or because they think he's bad? And if the former, do these idiots know that Toby is SUPPOSED to be a child?
It will definitely take time to get used to; I think it's almost creepier. It'll definitely be really scary to see the ending done with a child. I mean, don't get me wrong -- in a theatrical context, I like that Toby has been played by adults. There, it works. But to see a literal child killing someone is perhaps more disturbing. Or, at least, disturbing in a very different way.
Re: Toby - real little boys are forbidden in the theatre. Those roles should only by played by 25 year old midgets. And Wendy in Peter Pan should be played by a 25 year old woman with her breasts strapped down. Updated On: 11/27/07 at 10:51 AM
I am absolutely speechless. I didn't think I could get any more excited about seeing this movie. Not sure I like such a young Toby. I know he's supposed to be younger than he's played on stage ususally, but I think I would've preferred a young teen to an actual kid. But, I will keep an open mind about him til I see the whole movie. I did not, however, like the scene between Turpin and Anthony. It was weird! And the clip from Priest was just too darn SHORT!!!!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!
Part of me really wants to believe that's Sasha Baron Cohen belting at the end of "The Contest."
I love Alan Rickman. Perfect choice for Turpin.
There is something about "Not While I'm Around" that just feels wrong to watch...but completely right at the same time. The way Lovett is lying and the candle light almost make it seem sexual in a way that's both inappropriate and intriguing considering who's singing to her.
^If that makes any sense at all.

All the parts are played older in the stage version because the premise is that they are reenacting the story for us after the fact. Sweeney rises from the grave and they all tell the tale. This was portrayed more clearly in the revival with Toby "telling" the tale from the asylum he ended up in at the end of the tale. But the original also hints at this conceit.
Toby was, in fact, a boy when the story they are retelling/reenacting on stage took place. Since the movie depicts the story in real time, as it happens, Toby should be played by a boy. And Sweeney and Lovett also appear younger than we are used to.
Those clips give me nothing but hope. I am so excited for this. I could not have imagined that musical films would make a comeback, and Sweeney would have been the last one I thought would be made. I feel like I'm sharing a special treasured possession with the rest of the world.
Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.
But In "You Gandered at My Ward," why did it seem like Rickman was hitting on the kid? Or was he just threatening?

I resisted clicking the link (for all of 2 seconds) for fear of ruining the surprise. These are utterly chilling. I swallow any thoughts I may have had months ago. It truly looks and sounds like they've pulled this one off.

I am anticipating the scene at the end with Toby and Sweeney. Wonder how this actor is going to play that scene. It gives me chills just thinking about it. Can't wait. He looks a bit detached wile singing "Not while I'm around" which threw me a bit. But of course that is only a clip. Have to see the performance leading up to that point in the movie. I will be in the theater on Christmas morning.

You said it beautifully. I can't wait til December.
Edit - Sweeney and Lovett in their bathing suits in "By the Sea"; I capped it from the third featurette (no clip of the song, though).
