A BUNCH of SWEENEY Film Clips..(Priest, Toby, Pirelli etc.) — Page 3

'My Friends' was absolutely haunting. The expressions on Depp and Carter's faces alone could give you chills.
I absolutely adore Sascha Baron Cohen. He's hilarious and is absolutely perfect.
'Priest' is so understated and not a huge ridiculous number and that makes it all the more fun.
The difference with Carter's voice(from as far as the clips lead me to believe) is that her voice is much lighter, and she doesn't belt everything. Which is not a bad thing, thus far. She is definetely the one where I have to see the whole film to decide.
I just got so much more excited for this film.

I knew from day one Tim Burton was the only man in film today who could handle such a piece. Nice to see it look as if he's gotten it right.
I remember early reports of Sacha doing some kind of "rap" - not sure what that was about - it's evident he can carry a tune. Yes, the key has been lowered for him, but he seems to have the comedic flair for such a role.
I think Alan Rickman sounds terrific, as does the little boy as Toby. Great casting. Can't wait!

I knew from day one..."
We'll rush your certificate of brilliance and foresight right over! ...that is if we were aware enough to have ordered it ahead.
Seriously though, I don't think most people are surprised as much as we are thrilled that it has come to fruition as well as we thought it might. I believe most people have been optimistic about this for quite a while. Compare the reaction to the reaction to Hairspray as it was being made. Right up until its release people were picking at it relentlessly, even if they ended up liking it.

Are the lyrics to Pirelli's song altered at all? I don't recognize them but maybe they are the extended version from the OBC?

Can't wait to see this [properly] at the cinema!

Actually it's only "Not while you're around" that I'm thoroughly disappointed though. It's so extremely static that the best I feel watching it is "...well, sort of cute". But it doesn't give that uncomfortable feeling it should. It's more like he's singing a song to his mother that he`s practiced in singing lesson.
It should be bizarre and scary and it's none at all of that.
The other clips are promising.

I still hate Helena's singing, but wow, I am impressed with Tobias.

I thought Not While I'm Around was very interesting, and I can't wait to see the whole scene played in the movie. And having a child play the role makes it so much more disturbing.
Loving Spall as the Beadle, he looks perfect.

J. Depp is okay. It depends on what he sings. Epiphany, I'm sorry, I wasn't too fond of.
Priest was hysterical.
Helena can use some work on her singing, but whoever said he line delivery is good, I will 100% agree with that.
I DEFINITELY want to see this movie

That boy singing Pirelli's Miracle Elixir sounds GREAT! and I can tell this is going to be my favorite version of "Green Finch and Linnett Bird"!

But as a mentally slow adult, he's a credible threat to Sweeney and Lovett, which is why she locks him in the basement.

I do have to agree, I think Toby is a zombie in "Not While I'm Around."

I have to say, Helena looks brilliant as Lovett. Goodness, I am now seeing the movie mainly for her, she looks absolutely perfect.

I don't like Toby being played by a kid. Yes, I know he is a kid, but the character is so goddamn complex that I really don't think a child actor can grasp everything about him, especially not this kid. Sure, he's cute, but Toby is supposed to be more than just cute.
Also, Helena Bonham Carter's voice is really getting on my nerves. It's just totally not Mrs. Lovett.
It feels like the energy level of everything has just been brought down ten notches - The Contest was bland, and he seemed much more reserved in Epiphany than that moment calls for.
I'm really tired so I know these thoughts aren't coherent, but overall, not impressed, and I stand by my decision in not seeing it.

It's just...damnit.
I'm still not a fan of Depp's vocals and, geez, Carter? Anyone who's watched the Behind the Scenes footage might take care to notice that the odd editing and repetition of certain sections focuses around a lot of Mrs. Lovett's lines/lyrics and often stops right before a (traditionally) belted note. (This makes me hope/think that they may be trying to re-record some of her singing? I dunno.) She sounds so squeaky and strained at times... I understand the draw of these actors and the need for a piece like this to have as much drawing power as possible, but at the sacrafice of turning her role into a showcase of her inabilities as a singer? It's like listening to a junior high recital performance. Which speaks to me as a lack of confidence. Acting-wise, appears she'll do a fine job, as she usually does, but she's no Depp - not capable of acting through it, and even he appears to struggle with it. And then there's of course all the eliminated harmonies. Of course, anyone not familiar with the stage score probably won't notice changes as much as others, but I just think so much is taken away from the role when you make Lovett contained, especially vocally.
Of course, these are only brief clips.
Sondheim seems to approve as well, which is a strong confidence builder for me. Of course, why would he knock it? It's the biggest paycheck he's probably ever going to see. Unless Burton wants to tackle Pacific Overtures....WITH JOHNNY DEPP!
I jest.
Overall I'm still super excited to see it and will probably still be one of the first in line opening day, and will squeel and laugh at all my favorite lines with the delight of a child on Christmas morn. I just feel like it's going to be yet another movie where I walk out distraught that it could have been a world better with one or two different casting decisions. Prove me wrong, cast and crew.
