When I read that Linney was cast in this play I imagine she was probably unavailable to do NIGHT MUSIC from the get-go, a pity. I'm still hoping for a name to play Desiree.

It will be great just to have Laura Linney back on Broadway, but I can't deny that it was so sad to see her headshot at the top of Playbill.com today without a headline about her starring in "A Little Night Music" next to it.
I know she wasn't in the running, but she would have been magnificent in this.
I'm pretty sure Norm Lewis auditioned for this production... I don't know if they're open to colorblind casting, but he would be terrific as Frederick!
Should come in the next few weeks. Yes Lewis was seen for it, along with quite a few other leading men that you wouldn't normally associate with Sondheim. They're branching out and away from the usual suspects, I will say that.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

Though she may be being considered as a "back up" of sorts, Waddingham is not moving with the production at this time.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
I just saw it on Monday and it was superb! Waddingham was terrific as Desiree. While a "name" to play the role would definitely bring much publicity to the show, Waddingham is outstanding in the part. Her "Send in the Clowns" is heartbreaking! I loved the cast in London and may just have to see it on Broadway again!
I don't think I've ever heard Winslet sing, but what's fantastic about Desiree is that it was written specifically for a non-singer, and Sondheim says that "Send in the Clowns" is supposed to be performed by a non-singer because that's how it was written (hence why he dislikes Betty Buckley's oversung version), hence why so many A-list actresses who would generally not be considered for a musical are being considered for this part. I really can't imagine a better opportunity to have Winslet on Broadway. I still think Kidman would be miscast (doesn't mean she won't be good though), Linney is a hugely missed opportunity, and that from the names I've heard, Emma Thompsom is the most appealing one.

Are people just suggesting Kate Winslet or is there some truth to that?
In "Titanic" she sang for like 45 seconds in the church service...assuming that it was her. At any rate, in that 45 seconds she beat both Glynnis Johns and Elizabeth Taylor!!!!!!
I finally got the OBC of the show, and after listening to Send in the Clowns, I agree that basically any actress, who can act the part, could sing that song. In fact, Johns and Taylor actually sound BAD to me singing this...

Kate Winslet is a great singer. She has sung briefly in some of her films... Titanic, Sense and Sensibility, Heavenly Creatures... but most notably is her song What If: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-HESjOTHBQ
I'd be thrilled to see any of the mentioned actresses in the role, but I'd be most happy if it was Kate Winslet.
Well, we don't know what her schedule is like and whether she wants to be part of the production or not. But really I feel the production should do whatever they can to get her. If it means she can only do it opening night then I say get her! That's how much I think she should play the part. How great would a movie re-make be with her in the lead?
