It seems like one of the lightest (and so far weakest) seasons in history for new musicals...

Probably Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil in the Spring or maybe fall. Same with The Wanderer (Dion bio-musical)

Investors are bailing on original musicals as costs are out of control. Producers are having a terrible time raising money. I'm hoping for some surprises for this spring, but it's getting late.

I think the ones that sounded the closest to making a move this season were Benjamin Button and Wanted (though may be delayed due to the lawsuit/raising funds). Both Dolly and Purple Rain seemed like they wanted to come in but may be stalled by the reviews/word of mouth, and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil announced intentions of coming in but I really haven't heard anyone talk about it since so not sure if that's still in the works or not.
Not many, but I think The Lost Boys team is really testing the waters by slowly releasing songs, merch, keeping up with their socials almost daily, etc. to really build a curiosity for the audience and to determine what works. They just released another song today which I think sounds just gorgeous. We all have seen new musicals start their socials like a month in advance with no promos or special events. They all failed. If anyone has a shot or seems to know what they're doing, it's this team. Time will tell.

What I’ve heard too. They aren’t making sense on paper. But some will still come in. The other day someone was saying Midnight was still coming.
I mean there are a lot of rumors but until things close there really is not space for anything.
Currently we have 4 spaces that could house a show this season pending the shows currently in those spaces not extending any further than their current end dates: Golden, James Earl Jones, Majestic, Winter Garden.
Golden very well could be out if Mincemeat keeps their same formula as the West End and keeps extending a few weeks at a time. Winter Garden has rumors of a big name play going into it. So that could leave us with just 2 open spaces for everything that wants in at this point to fight for. Key word... could. We will surely have some closings it's just a matter of how many, what, and when.
I think the MOST likely at this point in regards to NEW musicals would be Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Purple Rain, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and MAYBE The Heart.

As it seems to be selling well, could Mamma Mia transfer to another theatre for open ended run if they're struggling to fill other houses?
I know its got the tour, but there must be a spare set somewhere to limit costs.
Wanted hasn’t said this publicly but they have pushed their opening to the fall and will not open this season. They just can’t get the financing. I’ve also now heard that the same issue has caused Purple Rain to push to next season too (and I thought they were the one guaranteed spring opening yet to announce!). No one is investing in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil right now, so don’t hold your breath. Galileo is also having trouble raising funds so I’m no longer expecting that one either.
So really the only other musical prepared to make the move this spring is Benjamin Button. That would leave us with 5 new musicals this season. And three nominees for Best Musical at the Tony Awards. Rough.

I doubt there will be any struggle to fill spaces as the limited space at present is going to make more of a fight for space than a fight to fill space. Also, it is very much the tour set they are using as well as the tour cast. There is no spare set sitting somewhere. To keep it going would be investing in a new set and a second cast or canceling the tour. They are likely gonna make more money on tour that Broadway post holidays.

Mincemeat announced an extension to April 26 today, so that's the Golden out for this season.
Re the Salesman rumor on the other thread, I love the play and I'd see it every season if I could. But it wouldn't fill the Winter Garden. Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf are perfect casting, but they're not George Clooney level ticket sellers. And I doubt Laurie would want to go into another play this season with no break.
Everything I've heard from Lost Boys sounds fine for Top 40 radio, but terrible as musical theater songs. Too much repeated chorus at the end, pedestrian lyrics, and very little characterization. Maybe it works better in context, but it's so hard to get past knowing the history of vampire musicals on Broadway.
I don't know a lot about Benjamin Button, but it seems to have some promise. I'm guessing the Majestic would be too big, and it needs a more medium-sized house?

I know I said this on another thread but I'd love to see Bat Boy take the St James after QOV inevitably leaves
Wanted has an air of damaged goods about it. I wouldn’t be totally surprised if it never makes it to Broadway at all.

And it was just as ridiculous on the other thread.

Wonder if Benjamin Button has looked at Jones but keep the balcony closed ?
Garden and Majestic are huge to fill.

Based on what I saw at Papermill, this would be wise.

It definitely feels like the lawsuit looming over it had stopped it in it's tracks. I don't see a world where they open while the lawsuit is still pending cus that's all the headlines will be about.
MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN is currently in development hell since they have high stake investors that have bailed. (Quite a few jumped over to CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL).
THE WANDERER died at Papermill, and WANTED might be going down the same road with the lawsuit being the albatross around the neck.
To me, a BAT BOY transfer would be a disappointment since a lot of it relied on the premium casting, most of which they would not be able to afford or need to replace for a commercial run, as well as it being a revival heavy year. I’m wondering where the chit chat about the DAMN YANKEES revival went, but I presume it’s because this is the year of revivals and they are possibly worried about getting lost in the shuffle.
The only other new musical I could foresee making a Spring landing would be WORKING GIRL, which the reviews tend toward the positive end.
Selfishly, I would LOVE to see MEXODUS come into one of the small theatres for a strictly limited 12-week run, either in the Jones or the Lena Horne (if SIX decides to fold)
There will never be another musical again.

At this point Two Strangers is going to cake walk right to Best Musical

Bat Boy would also likely fall under classics rule and end up in the Revivals which is already stacked and might get more stacked if the rumors are true that Evita is pushing to get in to work with Rachel's schedule this season after all. I will believe that when I see it but even so space is so limited.
