Thanks for the advice. It's always nice to hear from those who have struggled through the territory I'm going through right now. But, here's my question...what stops me from doing both (looking for an agent and developing relationships with directors/casting folk)? God knows I go to every audition I can and hang out with directors as often as I get the option. It just gets annoying going in to sing for assistant #8 who will never get a chance to actually relay what happened at the audition to anyone -- because it all gets precast except the few roles cast at the agent call. I just see the agent calls as being so much more productive as far as being cast in stuff. So, what to do until then...just sit back and wait for a break?
I don't know...maybe I'm missing ways to meet more casting people and directors...any ideas?

I just got back from doing nearly two years straight of regional gig after regional gig...which doesn't help me keep fresh in the minds of the casting folks here in NYC. It's a bizarre balance that I"m fumbling around trying to find. All I know is that now is the time for me to stay in NYC for a bit. =)

Do you have a musical theatre background? (formal training, etc.) I remember someone saying on here that if you're not doing regional in NYC, you won't get noticed.

I have no practical advice about getting an agent or anything, but my mind sort of wanders into the territory of whether you know someone who writes/composes that you could put on a show with?
I was riding the subway the other day and this girl stood up and started doing some spoken word poetry and then handed out cards advertising her upcoming gig. This is NYC people don't take flyers if they don't want them, but a nice cross-section of people actually took them and pocketed them instead of throwing them on the ground.
Which isn't to say you're not trying because obviously you are but maybe some out of the box thinking is required too.
Look at Bare, they just put it up without having any experience in developing a show.

Hey guys... I haven't been over here in, like, forever (school sucks the big one), but I just popped in to lurk and found out that John is doing Hairspray again, which I happen to be seeing December 8th. Does anyone have any more info on this?... Because it just made my year. The show's website has him down under ensemble, so I assume he won't be filling in for any principle anytime soon, right? Sucks because I would love to see him in the role he originated.

A little off-topic, but I just got back from NYC, so here's the short version for those of you who don't read the LJ.
Night Mother--decent Ave. Q--hilarious Brooklyn--Painful at times, but the performers are amazing Rent (yes, again)--pretty good, and Drew and Jeremy are so cute...
Great to meet Matt, sorry to miss Gina and Tracee.
I'm glad you had a good time at the concert Tracee, it sounds incredible.
Got offered a job on Staten Island for the summer. Seriously considering taking it. Not a lot of money, but free room. Hm...
And after reading the last three pages, can I just comment on the randomness of Love4Cheno's post? I just don't even know how to respond to that...
I can't believe John is back in Hairspray and I can't see it!!
Why do we play with fire?
Why do we run our fingers through the flame?
Why do we leave our hands on the stove, although we know we're in for some pain?
-tick...tick...BOOM!

I wish I could go see Pippin. I have just recently "discovered" BARE and Michael Arden.I listen to it a lot, but then I get sad that I will never see it! Anyway, Just wanted to say I am a new fan and envy all of you who got to experience this awesome show with such an awesome cast!
Is it possible to be proud of someone you don't really know? Because if it is then I was beaming with pride tonight on Michael's behalf. He was, as EddieVarley so astutely put it, so devoted to putting his all into the role. The one word that keeps ringing through my mind is glorious, I just think he was glorious.
The whole production was, but Michael in particular! I'll be on a nice big cloud my own corner of the sky for a good long while over this.
And from what I could see of the top of their heads, Jenna, Natalie and Kierran were as well.
I must also think of a way to see my newest girl crush Jenna as Nessarose. She's so sweet y'all.
Bedtime for me, but remind me to update more tomorrow!

And had a wonderful time last night with SCBWannabe and Trisky. Michael was amazing as Pippin. Unfortunately we couldn't really see anyone else from BARE from our seats since we were all the way on the left but they sounded great! :)
Nice to see so many other Bww'ers as well and you know who you are! :)

Have I mentioned how much I hate law school? Part of that has to do with me pulling out my hair trying to figure out how to learn 3 months of material in 2 weeks & the other part is that I am missing things like this. Four finals...how will I survive?
I expect a full report from those who can go. Not only is Michael Arden singing, but I love Brian Lowdermilk's music. He has a live recording of The Woman Upstairs Production now available on his website.
I bet Scott is doing great in JCS! He was one of the nicest people I have met at a stage door...I hope to hang out with him more when I get to the city.
