I really liked Cry-Baby actually. And Gypsy, of course.
Grease was just...pure crap.

Best: GYPSY, IN THE HEIGHTS.
Worst: GREASE.
I thought SUNDAY's performance was great, but they could have done much better with another number like "It's Hot Up Here" or "Sunday." And I still think XANADU should have done a medley.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 12:14amDaniel and Jenna were just beautiful, but I kind of agree with ray -- I found myself wishing for "Sunday." Performance-wise, though, they knocked it out of the park.

I thought Xanadu was easily the standout, everyone sounded fantastic and it looked great, absolutely nothing to complain about.
I was pleasantly surprised by Gypsy, I really didn't want to like Patti, but she nailed it.
I though Lion King was good, better than 10 years ago. Although I think they needed a little bit of an explanation as to why they performed for everyone who didn't know it was their 10th anniversary, Whoppi kind of just mentioned it at the end.
RENT was pretty disappointing, there was such massive hype, yet a mediocre, under rehearsed, predictable performance.
The Little Mermaid was obviously rushed, which I think threw Sierra off a little, but she was just about perfect, as always. I wish the producers would give her a break and choose a different song to do to promo the show, they've used it for every show they've been on.
A Catered Affair was exactly what I expected, a ridiculously boring, useless ballad. What I didn't expect however, was how terribly it was performed.
Young Frankenstein was quite good. Megan can really sing. I didn't find it funny in the least bit, but at least it wasn't crap.
I was a little disappointed with In the Heights, especially after all the raves it gets on this board. It seemed kind of muddled and misguided, the over-choreographed ensemble members cluttered the stage and were a little distracting. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the show didn't seem as "epic" as people make it out to be. The songs were good, but not great; I didn't have any strong feelings for the show, weather good or bad, just kind of "ehh".
South Pacific was fantastic, like Xanadu, no complaints here.
I was again, surprised by Grease. BY the way people talk about it on this board, I half expected them to walk on stage in poodle skirts and start beating helpless children. Granted, it wasn't the most thrilling piece of theatre ever, and probably didn't deserve a performance, or even a nod, but it was decent. Laura Osnes was great, Max Crumm was.......basically an ensemble member who happened to be put in the center of the dances.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 12:20amI really enjoyed the Cry Baby number. I was disappointed in The Lion King...the singing was just not good. Grease was kind of embarrassing. In the Heights was great, Xanadu was great, and I even enjoyed Passing Strange. Heck, seven out of eight nominated show performances were great. I love Little Mermaid, A Catered Affair, and Young Frankenstein, but they just didn't make the two minute thing work. Megan was still great, though, as was Sierra. I was disappointed in Faith, only because I LOVE her on the cast recording.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 12:23amI too enjoyed the *performance* of Cry-Baby. Didn't care for the song... it didn't say much. It showcased some great dancing that made it worth watching.

BEST(In Order): Xanadu, Gypsy, In The Heights, South Pacific, The Lion King
WORST:Grease, A Catered Affair
I thought Sunday in The Park With George was... okay. I felt the same way about Cry Baby. It wasnt good nor bad. And I thought the Rent performance was going to be a bit different and it kinda left me dissapointed, but it was still really sad.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 12:28amIts hard to choose a best but Patti was FIERCE for Gypsy!!! I really enjoyed all the performances. I thought In the Heights performance was missing something, but was still great, just didnt give me chills like when i listen to the recording, Xanadu was nice but i was distracted alot by Cheyennes legs. Grease....Dissapointing...Hated max, Laura was nice but Max dissapoints me baaaddD. Cry BABY'S Dancing was PHENOMENAL and the vocals were nice but i enjoyed the dancing more. the "3 other musicals" didn't really work for me....Sierra's placement sounded wierd, Faith hit a really awkward screeching note, and placement for Megan was strange too. I enjoyed Lion King thoroughly but like Rent's Easter Bonnet thing alot more too!!! This performance just was lack luster, though that lady still has that fierce high note in Seasons of Love so i was happy!

I normally am extremely pissed off at either performances or technical foul-ups - because in past years there's always some major doozies - but aside from minor mixing/mic issues, I thought all the performances ran very smoothly and were quite complimentary.
Special kudos to the camerawork...don't know who directed this year, because someone made the show run over and cut off my DVR - yeah, I said it! - but they did a fantastic job in coverage of the performances. Again, a vast improvement from the recent past.
AND FOR CHRISSAKES...Tony producers, whatever the hell you were thinking in not having a real host for the past couple of years? I mean, we all knew you were crazy, but I hope this shows you what this show needed to keep running smoothly.

I will say thank you very much to Patti for getting the show going (since Whoopi was having trouble) and for receiving the only standing o all night...I believe...
In The Heights was a very very close second.
And hooo rah for whomever seconded the idea of a South Pacific medley. KUDOS!!
And I hate to "award" a worst performance but I was sorta bummed with the hoopla that turned to blah of Rent. They sounded fantastic but I guess I just had my hopes to high.
Congrats to everyone who performed and didn't perform and those who won, didn't win, were nominated, and weren't nominated.

Best: Patti's number/win, Whoopi's hosting/skits, and as much I hate to say it..Xanadu
Worst: STEW! STEW! STEW! That guy is a TOOL! I'm sorry but looking like Mr. Potato Head was disrespecful to the whole evening. I wish he wouldn't have won best book.

Best: Gypsy, In the Heights (but Lin's voice was hoarse), Xanadu, South Pacific
Middle: Passing Strange, Young Frankenstein, A Catered Affair, The Lion King (never cared for it), Sunday in the Park with George
Worst: The Little Mermaid, Grease, Cry-Baby
Okay, so with "Rent", they had the new cast do a bit of "La Vie Boheme", and then the original cast start at the most random part of that song. I didn't see Jesse (was he there) or Daphne. They didn't give everyone a chance to speak, and they gave to much time to ensemble people to speak. It was just weird.

Posted: 6/16/08 at 12:43amI guess I'm prejudiced, but, for me, Xanadu was able to project what it is all about in a very short time. One poster said he was distracted by Cheyenne's legs -- well, who wouldn't be? Loved the Gypsy sequence and, to a lesser degree, the South Pacific. I'm not so sure that Passing Strange did itself any great favors -- we'll see. But I think that Xanadu gave itself a much-needed shot in the arm. HUZZAH!!!!!

I've seen Patti Lupone multiple times and always felt like her acting was very self-aware and that she sang very nasally. For me, her performance in Sweeney was the last straw. Just didn't care for it and I love that character.
After seeing her on the Tonys tonight, I really want to go see her in Gypsy. Maybe this is the role I need to see her in. Maybe that role just suits her perfectly, but I really liked everything I saw and heard from her tonight.

BEST: Gypsy, Xanadu
WORST: Passing Strange
i know i'm in the minority here, but grease wasn't as much of a mess as i was expecting. catered affair was horrendous. i also wasn't a huge fan of cry-baby, but i got into the performance, loved the choreography.
