SporkGoddess, definitely listen to SUNDAY again, it's the kind of show that takes a few listens to appreciate its brilliance. Patti LuPone did some spectacular acting during tonight's performance. She just gave me chills when she tore that letter, and she truly looked monstrous as she headed towards Benanti and Gaines. It was just out of the world. I would put it up there with Michael Jeter's show-stopping "We'll Take a Glass Together" and Jennifer Holliday's legendary "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." IN THE HEIGHTS did a great job, though I kinda wish they hadn't cut the song. PASSING STRANGE was...interesting, didn't care much for it to be honest, although everyone looked so full of energy, excited to be there, and rocking that stage. Just not my personal taste.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Gypsy was my favorite performance of the night. I was surprisingly happy with Young Frankenstein's performance. In the Heights showed off the fact that its score and choreography are pretty damn fantastic. And Passing Strange just...love. Love love love.
Major hate on Little Mermaid. Sierra Boggess just didn't know what to do with herself, and no one on earth knows what to do with her tail.
In conclusion, Mario Lopez is a smug bastard to the point that even fifteen Whoopis cannot overpower the smuggitude.
Burn the witch
The witch is dead
Burn the witch
Just bring me back her head
I too found Young Frank's performance surprisingly pleasant. It's a shame Catered Affair came off so terrible, and with Faith Prince singing very pitchy.
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
So disappointed with RENT. Glad to see them all (except my Jesse) and they sounded great and looked great (except Wilson - is he sick?), but I blinked and it was over...
Best: Xanadu (so proud of them and it's getting great response) and Gypsy (Patti=chills)! Worst: Grease (so awkward watching that I couldn't look away) and Catered Affair (yawn)
Yeah, I guess I wasn't the only one who noticed how sick Wilson looked.
If I didn't know better I'd think he was in make-up for Angel's death scene.
I was going to say something similar, but as usual LePetite put it the best.
I wish they had let Mullally sing "Deep Love" in the original tempo, it was SO fast, and while I thought it was funny, I simply couldn't get over how much she was quoting Karen Walker which as I said before, she does not do on the cast recording. Sierra Boggess was awful, though I'm not sure it's her or her awful costume and the fact that they make her do that REALLY annoying thing with her arms.

Best : XANADU, Gypsy (Wow Patti, Wow), In The Heights (have to see this show now!!!) Sunday in the Park with George (took my breathe away)
Worst: Passing Strange (wtf?), A Catered Affair, Rent (I was actually excited about the original cast performance but it was a complete mess. Whats the story on Wilson Cruz?)
btw Whoopi was completely un-necessary. She didn't really host anything! She was just there. I loved the bit in the Poppins Rig.. other than that.. worthless.
The only Whoopi bit that I didn't care for was the A CHORUS LINE one. I might have liked it if Mario Lopez hadn't been involved. It seemed like she was just trying to do a little tribute to the shows while bringing it back to the Tony awards. She was thoroughly enjoyable, steered the show in the right mood and direction (loved her bits when she introduced the plays..."where he drinks...a lot...'cause he's Irish"), and just really seemed to be enjoying herself (she danced with Lin-Manuel Miranda!). After last year's awful ceremony, it really was refreshing to have such a wonderful presentation. I was actually entertained all throughout (more than I was at the last Oscars and Emmys ceremonies).

ICEcreamAssassin, do you mean Wilson Jermaine Heredia?
And I really enjoyed having Whoopi as host. She did a fine job, and having a host helped give the ceremony a real sense of direction, as opposed to last year's meandering (and boring) hodge-podge.
Best: Gypsy - the performance just blew me away { not that I was expecting anything less }.
Worst: Not counting the horrible performances from the trio of non-nominated shows - I would have to say Grease
Other notes: I disliked Whoopi as host ... but maybe that's because I already dislike her in general :P But I will give her credit for not being boring and doing better than some of the previous years.
And I realized that i wouldn't like Xanadu... Yes, the performance quality was great but I learned that it's just not my cup of tea... do you get what I'm trying to say? xD
