Lambert spoke out when people laughed at “she doesn’t look jewish at all”. He didn’t ad lib criticizing the material.

Yeah - any ad lib on Lambert’s part was fully in character. Billy is not in any sort of character.
There’s an audio on the Tok of three different moments from the “these are the jokes, I didn’t write them” show after he completely misses the point of the “Your wife? What would she want with me?” line being intentionally cheesy. It’s pretty rough. You can basically hear the audience pulling away from him.

They need to get Kander to right some new jokes before he dies. That joke about the wife, we’ve heard it so many times, it’s just not funny anymore. I have Joel grey vividly in my head saying it, as well as Alan
Sadly none of the jokes were Kander’s to begin with, and Joe Masteroff has gone the way of Elsie.

Enjoy this clip of an audience member screaming “No, No!” at the end of Billy’s I Don’t Care Much on Thursday night, everyone else.

Um, isn’t that Sally Bowles reacting to being pulled into the Emcee’s arms for an embrace? She is resisting the movement, but finally lets go and accepts her fate. I don’t think that was the audience, it was Marisha.

Oh interesting. That makes sense. Much more vocal than any other Sally I’ve heard. Auli and Eva were practically silent in comparison.
If I wrote a show and an actor maligned the material to the audience, I'd work very hard to get them fired as quickly as possible.

I concur. Entirely unprofessional and just not nice.

Yes, let’s have John Kander, the composer of the music, “right” some new jokes for Cabaret before he dies.

Did Billy hear "Cabaret" and think he was doing a residency at 54 Below? Because this is so Ass.
Billy doesn’t do things as written, dahling. He does what he feels because he is iconic, he is the moment, he is legend, he is everything.
Or whatever BS he pays someone to tell him when he wakes up every day.
It's a shame that Marisha Wallace's very good performance is overshadowed by her lazy, self-indulgent costar.
The Oracle is now suggesting that this video could be interpreted as racist.
Although I guess as Paul in Company says… “Ya see what ya look for.” So for people constantly looking to be offended, they’ll find it!

Well when you get a bright idea to mimic a black artist and decide to throw a white blanket over your head... then edit a video... then post the video... and not once think about the visual you just made? Kind of on you when people call it racist... cuz yeah... it does look like you're in Klan robes...

Hahahaha. I would love to see a Ryan Murphy backstage drama of this 'Cabaret revival', starring Billy Porter playing Billy Porter in a self-deprecating way with scenes such as this actually acted out. I think he and the show would be brilliant!

what's wrong with Billy Porter in CABARET? | the uncomfortable truth behind the Broadway backlash
Anyone have the CliffsNotes on that?

He barely wrote anything while he was in Berlin!
I think the overall suggestion is that while they accept there can be some good faith criticism towards Billy, there seems to be something a bit strange and insidious going on with the group social dynamics towards him - almost like a mob mentality, especially from many who have never seen the show - using some examples such as the nature of criticism towards Billy (eg suggesting many of the criticisms towards Billy such as his alleged lack of vocal quality and improvisations could of course be applied to many previous productions or previous iterations of this production), but also the volume and inappropriateness of some of the criticism (eg rude comments on Marisha Wallace posts saying they love her but hate Billy, TikTok videos of people impersonating him badly). Making it a bit personal etc.
I can think of a couple times this kind of thing has happened…Beanie in Funny Girl maybe? It’s almost like people are ravelling in the humiliation of it all.

I really like MickeyJo's criticism skills. Sometimes I strongly disagree with them, but he's fantastic in the role he's created for himself.
In this video (which I happened to have watched in its entirety yesterday) he dips into discussion of racial micro aggressions as they might apply to the negativity around Porter's performance. I wanted to say the following to him, but couldn't find a way to do so privately, so here goes: What might be perceived as a racist undercurrent toward Porter's performance might actually be a pent up backlash against the very thing that MickeyJo gives credence in his commentary here: declaring something 'micro aggressive'. I think a lot of people are good and done with this mindset - to be clear, I am - and when it's invoked I think it provokes an anger that is too dangerous to state clearly on the internet because of the screeching (shade intended) keyboard activists - leading to clumsily expressed frustration that comes out sideways. We've created an environment where parts of human nature (such as perceiving cultural differences and liking them or being bothered by them) is so automatically vilified that it's stifling to discourse and people's real experience in the world - and I think that's counter productive to actual progress. "See the world as I do or you are evil" is not progress - it's actually fascist.
So no, I don't think the distaste for Porter's performance is racist - but it could be distorted by simmering frustrations rooted in the diminished freedom of expression we're living with these days. If you don't think black American racial politics work as a foundation for the Emcee character, you should be able to share that opinion without being labeled a Klansman.
What a fitting username.
Yeah I stopped watching the video yesterday as soon as he started lecturing us about the morality of making fun of Porter’s performance (Sweaty Oracle made a similar video which I also could not get through). From the clips I’ve seen and heard, Billy Porter absolutely deserves the hate he is getting for giving an incredibly self-indulgent performance that disrespects the brilliant material and is not worth a fraction of the hundreds of dollars audience members are paying.
And the ghost video someone made is not the least bit racist. I never would have thought about the KKK (the other one) had some rage-baiting keyboard warrior not brought up. Puh-leeze.
