Cats, the original, ran at the Winter Garden or the Neil Simon, which are both bigger houses. It's not a small show. Not sure what this current revival would require, but I'd think they'd want more seats."
But this isn’t the original…
And if I’m counting correctly, this production has only 8 people in the orchestra."
Nor am I saying it is? Just saying it's not a tiny show by any means. You'd have to crunch the numbers and see if it makes sense. Oklahoma was a super stripped down version. Not sure if that falls in this category of not as I've not seen it. I'm sure the producers have cracked the numbers and will make the best call for their situation.

The casting for the London version was so full of big (American) names. I'm so surprised the casting for Broadway couldn't find more big names. Or ask some of those artists back, even if it was just for 4 weeks...
Aimee Lou Wood, Maude Apatow, Rebecca Lucy Taylor, Cara Delevingne, Jake Shears...
Anericans may know some of those names, but they aren't drawn enough to spend big bucks on seeing them perform live, especially not a UK-specific performer like Rebecca Lucy Taylor.
Aimee Lou Wood would have been the most generally identifiable & enticing (due last season’s The White Lotus) but who’s to say that would be enough for people to pay Broadway prices.

True. But who knows Eva Noblezada outside the theater world? Or Auliʻi Cravalho outside the families who watch Moana.

Is Billy Porter turning into the next James Corden?
Discuss...
At least he's actually a gay fay and not just doing it for the cameras...

Not sure, but if it is, no complaints here. They both had reputations for being less than kind or perhaps not the most professional to those deemed not on their level long before the public caught on. Both have talent, Tonys and Emmys, but they are not irreplaceable. Cannot speak to Corden’s situation, but Porter’s behavior was clocked long before he collected any tchotchkes from the industry.

Also LOL to the guy who emphatically said it wasn't them."
LOL You people are really pathetic! Yea that guy is me and was told it was not them when I asked an industry friend.
I was told a new cast announcement was coming and it did a day or so later. I asked the friend who's replacing and he would not say and then asked - hope it's not Billy and that girl and he told me nope. That's what I then shared. Got it. Playing around no sense of humor.
Move on! People take everything so seriously-chill.
Now back to Porter and Wallace
Closing with Billy and the other girl (Wallace) who I don't know is a big disappointment and I doubt this will last for the remaining scheduled run and close earlier. They should have just closed with Orville and Eva and market as last 4 weeks with them! They needed a better casting director with fresh ideas such as the team over at Hadestown as they know what they're doing and continue to cast with interesting ideas. I'm surprised that the show didn't do better wth Orville and Eva because they are AMAZING and gave the show a much needed lift and both received widespread praise from critics and audiences so what happened ... Is it marketing or what?

At first I thought this was a clip from 30 Rock
Billy looks amazing. Looking forward.
FYI - Pedro Garza remains on as Cliff for the whole first week while Calvin Leon Smith continues his recovery from shingles-induced facial paralysis

The reviews for Pedro have been so great, I hate the circumstances, but it's nice to see Pedro shine.
Pedro and Eva were fantastic together on Saturday night (and the crowd was ENERGIZED, but in a good way).
There was a bit more visible unease (in character) than Calvin, and he definitely knew how to ride that ebb and flow until Cliff goes into survival mode toward the end of Act II. If you see Pedro, you are in great hands.
Looking forward to hearing the Billy + Marisha reports from tonight.
This post seems to provide some evidence to the hypothesis that maybe Billy’s performance in Cabaret was better towards the end of the run (when I saw it) than at the beginning.

Very interested to see what’s about to happen here in New York. Ticket sales look challenging and Billy Porter has already managed alienate people through his controversial comments.
Never a dull moment in New York City theatre.
This Reddit thread seems to be giving a lot of the first performance reviews. The TL; DR;
- Mixed on Billy, raves for Marisha.
- Billy’s voice is tired, and he apparently blew an (added) higher note at the end of “I Don’t Care Much” and it did NOT go over well with the audience.
- Billy’s characterization of the Emcee as an expat from from the Jim Crow American South left many feeling that he lost the plot.
- Marisha blew the house down with the title song, as expected.
- They both came out the stage door fairly quickly and signed

I really hope Marisha continues to wow audiences here. She’s really someone who deserves to be a true Broadway and west end star.
Porter playing the Emcee as an American expat makes absolutely no sense. The character is the symbolic representation of Germany. It also feels like a slap in the face to the history of black Germans who were persecuted during the war.
Example seats available for tonight - they will sell most of these by curtain but I wouldn't say it looks healthy for the first Friday night of a new cast.
I don’t see how this doesn’t close by Labor Day. Aside from the lead producer also being the theatre owner, it doesn’t really make much financial sense to run it through one of the bleaker parts of the season.

At this point keeping it open another 6 weeks isn't going to make any meaningful difference. Where sales are currently can't be THAT far off from their projections. Moving up a closing date even earlier is also a bad look to the artists and their agents, and that DOES mean something to a producer like ATG.

Wow that’s very poorly sold for around 16 hours before a Friday night show. At a glance I’d guess it’s 35% sold. I suppose it will be at TKTS and they’ll move a few more.
A few hours before curtain. I think they will likely not be able to move most of the mezz tickets before curtain tonight but hopefully the TKTS booth can pick up the slack.

That’s a decent improvement. I wonder who buys table tickets last minute on a whim like that. Mu$t be nice!
