"To me, it feels like an affront to legitimate motion pictures, regardless of how bad they might be, to classify this alongside them. To close, I thought I’d borrow from Roger Ebert. Although the following sentiments were written about North, they’re a close representation of how I feel about Cinderella, the worst excuse for a movie I have seen since the beginning of the pandemic (and probably longer than that): “I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it.” There. That just about sums it up."

From James Berardinelli of Reelviews, never seen this kind of vitriolic hatred for a movie musical since Cats. Can't wait to watch it later!

Musical Master said: "Out of the eightlive action movie musicals that are coming out this year alone, I think this one will probably be the weakest of the bunch. In case for those who don't know, these are the live action musicals for this year (animated ones don't count):

  1. In The Heights
  2. Annette
  3. Cinderella
  4. Everybody's Talking About Jamie
  5. Dear Evan Hansen
  6. Tick. Tick... Boom!
  7. West Side Story
  8. Cyrano

"

There's also a low budget movie musical Tomorrow Morning that planned to come out late this year or early 2022. It stars Samantha Barks and Ramin Karimloo, and is actively shooting still according to their twitter account: https://twitter.com/TomMorningMovie

Just finished watching this. To say it is terrible is an understatement. This was just really really horrible in every way under the sun.

Just finished watching it and it's as boring and bland as I feared it would be. The only actor who pulls through is of course Billy Porter who clearly knows what movie he's in, honestly more of him would have been the smart thing to do. Everyone else from Brosnan, Driver, Menzel and especially Camilla Cabello are wasted and all of them deserve a better movie musical that's trying so hard to get out, but it never bothers showing up. I feel bad for Kay Cannon for she can do good work, but here I don't know if she even tried judging from how aggressively mediocre the script and musical numbers are.

So yeah, overall it's probably going to be the weakest movie musical of this year. For the ones coming soon, there's nowhere to go but up.

I thought I’d hate it and loved it. Enjoyed a lot of the mashups and arrangements, loved the choreography, and Camilla is a better actress than I expected.

just one word: cringe. And they borrowed a lot from & juliet and Moulin Rouge.

One of the worst movies I've seen in recent years, but I guess it shouldn't be a surprise as straight to streaming seems to be the new straight to video.

The autotune and poor lip syncing feels like a bad glee episode, it's desperately trying to be a moulin rouge but feels like a budget Ella enchanted (which I actually have a soft spot for tbh)

The story is not as modern or subtle as its trying to be and the tone is just all over the place. The love story is still love at first sight having barely met, and although the twist to the ending in theory was good its all so heavy handed that it can be seen a mile off. Its just like it was written over lunch one day with no development. Definitely some good ideas in there but they're under developed.

There seems to be this view of cinderella that all she wanted was a man (something alws cinderella creative team and cast keeps saying) but the original story is about having courage and hope in the face of adversity and all she wanted was a good night out and an escape from her daily life. She just happened to meet the Prince who then accepts her for who she is. And anyway both this version and the alw version make it about finding love anyway so I don't really see either as particularly progressive.

The characters are all stereotypes and cliches, and majority of the cast dont come out of it particularly well either. That said it was nice to see Fra Fee and Beverly Knight get some exposure, and Idina is pretty good.

Expected nothing from this but actually rather enjoyed it. It's not high-art or going to revolutionize cinema or the movie musical but for what it was - it was fine. The story of Cinderella is always going to be predictable but I thought some of the new stuff was fun. Idina was great, Minnie Driver was fantabulous (I had no idea she was in this so I got all kinds of excited when I saw her), the Prince was charming (no pun intended), Billy Porter was Billy Porter and Camila was excellent, I thought. She's very natural as an actress, at least in this role and made you want to root for her.

Again, the film broke no new ground and anyone who expected it to just had way too high expectations for it. But for what it was, I felt it worked, overall. The only absolute crime the film committed was casting Beverly Knight (Queen Tatiana) and not having her sing. IN A MUSICAL. That's unforgivable.

Thought it was mildly entertaining but I’m not the target audience. Everyone did their job. I think kids and tweens may really enjoy it and it will be special to them. Just like all the terrible movies I watched as a kid that hold a special place in my heart.
Billy Porter gets paid to play everything exactly the same. He’s like Mae West.

Totally agree with you about Billy. Been a fan for so long and it’s kind of a shame to know that this seems to be all we’ll ever get from him from here on out.

He was unable to be himself for decades, so go easy on him. And nobody knows what he's got in store for us in the future. He has proven to be a pretty good director though.

I’m not saying it’s bad Sutton, it’s just Billy. I enjoy him. I do hope that in the future someone gives him some material that stretches him. He is a remarkable talent. And as you state, I’d love to see him continue to direct. He has great instincts.

The one good thing I will say about the movie is that it wasn't as infuriatingly insulting as Annie 2014. At least Cinderella has that going for it.

Well this was just an absolute car crash.

No wonder they didn’t give it a cinema release , it would have tanked big time.

I’m at the point where I never want to see Billy Porter on screen again. It’s just the same old schtick and I am BORED.

The opening number was particularly dreadful and the constant striving for everything to be funny was just exhausting.

I don’t know how Camilla Cabello has any kind of pop career, she is a vacuum of charisma and her voice is below average. The lip quivering is embarrassing. Honey you ain’t Christina. Can only assume she has a career because of the interest in her relationship.

You know it’s bad when Pierce Brosnan is one of the best things in a film.

Uncageg, the two original songs were "Million to One" and "Dream Girl".

I saw this at a Movie Tavern when I remembered the film was said to be released not just on Amazon Prime but also "select theaters". I was so happy to see it on the big screen. It really showed off Kay Cannon's directing talent. Anyway, the costumes and sets were beautiful, especially Cinderella's gorgeous pink-white dress. The singing was phenomenal and I was surprised by Nicholas Galitzine's voice. Though of course Pierce Brosnan's voice was awful, but this time on purpose! "Material Girl" was a really fun singing scene! And I thought "Million to One" was a pretty good song. The acting of everyone impressed me, too. Especially Idina Menzel and Camila Cabello. I didn't think Camila would be that good. And I felt sad for her a few times. But the story felt less powerful without Cinderella seeking love and to feel worthy of being a princess and stuff. And there was no pumpkin and no glass slipper fitting! The dress transformation was gorgeous at least. So, all in all I thought it was pretty good, but not near as good a the two Disney Cinderellas or Ever After or the Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderellas.

Like most new films, this one does have a theatrical release as well AND is playing at select theatres nationwide right now.

Maybe you should "know" better people? Seriously -- what has Corden ever done to cause so many theatre fanatics to go mental (other than support Broadway and live theatreon his show, host the Tonys, bring national attention to musicals, etc.)? It's the Rosie O'Donnell thing all over again.
"

I've never heard of a genuine reason to hate James Corden, but I do think there's a cumulative irritation that he's constantly cast in things that he seems frankly incompetent for

There is no reason. He constantly has people from Broadway on his shows, gave money to the Broadway community during Covid, raised huge money with his video about Trump's last day for them and has had no controversies. Seems to love his family and be a respectful good guy. My opinion (because it was deleted last time) is LGBTQIA+ people hate him because he's a straight white cis male. Apparently he has no business loving theater? It's really all I can think of. I hope I'm wrong though because that would be beyond ridiculous. But, I've never heard a legit reason to hate the guy in all the years he's been successful. Like, show me the article that he sexually harasses people or verbally abuses his staff like Ellen did? Or says horrible things about Trans people like Randy Rainbow? You cannot because he doesn't treat people like garbage. Weird how those two people got passes around here yet James Corden who has not done those things gets insulted. For no reason at all.

Hmm.....

This is one of the dumbest posts I ever remember reading on here and that is saying a lot. You are conflating 2 unrelated subjects. No one gets a free ride in the assessment of their performances (and that's all I am reading here) based on how good a person they are. If that were the case, I would be cast all the time and I can assure you I don't have enough performative talent to get cast in Mrs. Marino's high school drama class. We insult performances around here when we don't like them. We insult people we think are incompetent. That's it. You are entitled to your "opinion." It tells us a lot about you however that I am sorry to learn.

I mean, if Reddit is to be believed, he's known to be kind of a dbag behind the scenes. There was an infamously messy Ask Me Anything from a few years back that still gets mentioned every now and then.

Regarding the movie, not even a cast this good can escape the lazy material. Camila Cabello was better than I expected and Billy Porter put in exactly the performance I expected (not much you can do with like 5 minutes screentime), but the palace scenes were more enjoyable. Just a confusing mess of a movie I'll forget completely about in a short enough time.

You have been given lots of reasons here, none supporting your dumb thesis however. As usual, you ignore inconvenient facts. You know, a la Trump. Content analysis is usually a good tool, and "here" that would have led you to the answer. PS "Here" is not Reddit.
