Well, the standards are pretty low.

if Universal put Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, who are ages 53 and 50 years old, and they played college aged girls… social media wouldn’t be happy
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
The Vulture article sums it up. I also thought his foundation was alarming from day one. Overall, it’s egregious. Studios, producers, and creative consultants are notorious for giving notes from day one. Anyone who couldn’t see this needs to be fired. I believe their hands were tied and they were on a burning runaway train.
Me thinks Mr. Platt had very tight creative control and there was a cease and desist on giving “the Tony winner who created the role” any notes. He wanted the perm, he wanted to be uber thin, he wanted the pancake makeup to cover up his hirsute face. I sense he took the project very seriously so I’m not saying he’s unprofessional. I’m just saying he needed someone trustworthy to intervene and it clearly didn’t happen. Maybe a lot of “yes” people on the project.
I saw the show during previews and there two men in the back of the theatre discussing the show. I was unsure if they were connected to the show or not but they didn’t sit during the show and leaned against the back wall. I heard one saw, “Michael had to fight tooth and nail to get him to stop all the twitching. Thank god he did. He was acting like Leo in Gilbert Grape. It was very distracting.” Maybe he’s a method actor and no one stepped in to shape his appearance.
I also don’t know why he’s choosing to look like a 40 year old 70s folk singer on the press junket. It’s not helping his case.

I’m curious if the bad PR for this film will end up tainting the perception and legacy of his Broadway performance. In hindsight maybe it was best to stop while you’re ahead…
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I was visiting my Mom last week and we were watching tv. The preview for the film came on and i paused it on Platt. My Mom has zero idea who he is and even less interest in theater in general (I get my love of it from my Dad) but I said - “how old do you think he is?” She said “Is that a friend of yours?” I laughed and said no but I was just curious what she thought and she said “40? 45?” Then she got all uncomfortable and was all “I hate when you put me on the spot like that” and I was all “Ma, it was just a question there’s no right or wrong answer!” and she wanted to know how old he really was and I just said “42, you were right!” and she felt ok.

I don’t think it’s going to help the show reopening. I don’t think it will be the sold out juggernaut it was.

The reviews haven't been kind at all. How does a Tony winner bomb out in the movie version?
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
I don’t think that hurt the Broadway production though. It disappointed OG fans of the show but I don’t remember anyone saying they weren’t going to see it live anymore based on that.

Because that Tony winner isn’t a good film/TV actor. At least, not yet. He is an incredible singer and stage performer, but he has yet to master the subtleties of film acting. This could be due to three reason: he just doesn’t have enough TV/film experience yet, he hasn’t been coached properly, or he refuses to learn. I truly have no idea which one it is.
I think Platt COULD be a really good film/TV actor, but just because he is good on stage doesn’t automatically mean that’s he is going to be great in other modalities.
With that being said, I am both excited and intrigued to see his transformation in Merrily We Roll Along.
Ben is a character actor, not a leading man. Hopefully he can put this debacle behind him in a “thank god that’s over with” kind of way and carefully choose what comes next, calming down on the Big Star stuff being shoved into his ego

If his ego needs to be calmed (I don’t know him personally, so I can’t speak on his ego), the reviews this film and his performance in it are receiving should do the trick.
Someone should perhaps have said “look marc I appreciate this is sensitive, but these makeup and hair tests are terrible, and it’s going to completely distract everyone from the film, Ben is going to get enormous blowback as it stands, pleeaaasseee let’s find a better look and give the film a better chance”
Of course there’s always the possibility that they did just that, and this was as good as it was gonna get
I have an idea he probably thought that this was his chance to join the elite "EGOT" club. Well slim chance of that happening this time around. He does seem to come off as a bit of a "spoiled and entitled rich kid" but I can't help but feel a bit sorry for him that, after all the accolades and praise he received for his stage performance, that this is where it has ended up. What's the old adage ... isn't it "better to go out while you're on top"? Now, unfortunately, this will forever cast a shadow over his connection with the show.

So yeah. That was the conversation lol"
Oh, no. I can't stop laughing.
There were so many bad decisions in wardrobe, makeup, etc. Either everyone hired was incompetent or something was forcing their hands. Charitably, maybe it was a collective delusion where it didn't seem so bad day to day.
But who knows, i could go to theater and watch the film next week and absolutely love it and wonder what the hell those critics were talking about. Stranger things have happened and there’s a lot of movies where I completely disagree with critics.
