As we're getting closer to Nomination Day, I'd like to ask you all who you think deserves to be among this year's Tony Nominees for Best Direction of a Musical? Please keep in mind that since we've got more than seven eligible candidates this year, there will likely be five nominees.
*Bill Condon-Side Show
*John Doyle-The Visit
Scott Ellis-On the Twentieth Century
Gary Griffin-Honeymoon in Vegas
*Sam Gold-Fun Home
Kenny Leon-Holler If Ya Hear Me
Joe Mantello-The Last Ship
Des McAnuff-Doctor Zhivago
Casey Nicholaw-Something Rotten!
Diane Paulus-Finding Neverland
David Hyde Pierce-It Shoulda Been You
*John Rando-On the Town
Eric Schaeffer-Gigi
*Bartlett Sher-The King & I
*Christopher Wheeldon-An American in Paris
*Who I think deserves a nomination.
I think Bill Condon's slot will go to Casey Nicholaw.
Sam Gold
Casey Nicholas
Bartlett Sher
Christopher Wheeldon
Diane Paulus (who I think will be snubbed)

John Doyle
Sam Gold
Casey Nicholaw
Bartlett Sher
Christopher Wheeldon
And possibly John Rando instead of John Doyle. I think the others are pretty sure bets.
I thought Sam Gold's direction was very good, but it felt a little "look at well this show is directed". He will probably win, though. Of those who I saw, I thought John Doyle did the best.
Who it should be:
Sam Gold - Fun Home
John Rando - On The Town
Bartlett Sher - King and I
Csey Nicholaw - Something Rotten
Chris Wheeldon - An American in Paris

Jeffrey, we do not need a new thread for every category.
Sam Gold should and will win. Bart Sher will also be nominated.
My thoughts:
Bill Condon-Side Show (HAHAHAHAHAHA)
John Doyle-The Visit
Scott Ellis-On the Twentieth Century
Gary Griffin-Honeymoon in Vegas (This was a hit with critics, though?)
Sam Gold-Fun Home
Kenny Leon-Holler If Ya Hear Me
Joe Mantello-The Last Ship
Des McAnuff-Doctor Zhivago
Casey Nicholaw-Something Rotten! (He can stage one hell of a show though)
Diane Paulus-Finding Neverland (Doesn't deserve it for this piece. Shame.)
David Hyde Pierce-It Shoulda Been You
John Rando-On the Town
Eric Schaeffer-Gigi
Bartlett Sher-The King & I
Christopher Wheeldon-An American in Paris
im shocked by these predictions!!
Sher, Doyle, Gold, Nicholaw, maybe Paulus is they nominate 5
Sam Gold - Fun Home
John Doyle - The Visit
Bartlett Sher - The King & I
Casey Nicholaw - Something Rotten!
Christopher Wheeldon - An American in Paris
"Sam Gold - Fun Home
John Doyle -The Visit
Bartlett Sher -The King & I
Casey Nicholaw -Something Rotten!
If 5th slot: Christopher Wheeldon - An American in Paris"
First of all, there WILL be 5. They announced the rule change this January:
And after his reviews tonight, expect to see Wheeldon not only nominated but contending for the award.
My choices would be
Sam Gold
Christopher Wheedon
Bartlett Sher
Bill Condon
The fifth will prob go to Casey Nicholaw while my opinion is he deserves a choreography nod more than a directorial one. The failure of the second act is just as much his as the writers. He's the captain of that cruise ship
I hope Bill Condon gets recognized over John Doyle. They both reimagined earlier works but for my money The Visit is a collegiate excercise while Side Show was an artically more successful realization.
Giving Condon a nomination over Doyle would be a farce. Side Show had horrific direction. If anything, give it a nom for it's set or something. But just because someone's concept of a show is cool, doesn't mean it's executed well. Doyle's is inspired and innovative. Side Show was a boring mess.

If there are five nominees, I'll predict (who I think not who I want)
Sam Gold, Fun Home
Casey Nicholaw, Something Rotten
Christopher Wheeldon, An American in Paris
Bartlett Sher, The King and I
Scott Ellis, On the Twentieth Century
neonlights - I actually find it quite beneficial to not have to wade through a mass of posts in one general "tony predictions" thread to find predictions for one category.
anyhow thanks for the thread Jeff!
I think that the nominees will probably be
Sher - The King and I
Wheeldon - An American in Paris
Doyle - The Visit
gold - fun home
Toss Up between Paulus/Nicalaw
I'd like for Condon to get nominated - but AH well.

VotePeron some can say Doyle is the reason The Visit is a tedious self indulgent exercise of a director considering his own contribution above the material. Go back and read the reviews of SideShow they were amazing. IMO Condon got out of the way of the material and let it shine in a way it had not been seen previously. SideShow's failure was subject matter and drumming up interest in the winter holiday season. No one was interested. many were turned off by the original production and many fans of the original refused to see it tampered with - limiting ticket sales. We shall see what the critics have to say about The Visit but it too is drumming up no interest outside the theater crowd which we now know buys you a few months if not weeks these days. To each his own I suppose
I doubt the tony's will want controversy by snubbing the only eligible woman. I don't think she deserves the award, but I'm saying that she will be nominated.
Considering Paulus just won two years ago, I highly doubt a snub would cause controversy this year.
"I doubt the tony's will want controversy by snubbing the only eligible woman. I don't think she deserves the award, but I'm saying that she will be nominated"
Paulus? She's been nominated multiple times and has already won before. The voters don't owe her anything.
And is it really a "snub" if a person doesn't deserve it? There will be directors that simply have not done one of the top 5 jobs directing.
The way people use the word "Snub" has gotten so out of hand. I haven't seen FN yet, but if there are 5 better directors than Paulus, then that's that.
It's never really been about what show is bettter or who is better. It all just comes down to what peope liked more.
