Downstate Premiering on Broadway this Fall?

Downstate Premiering on Broadway this Fall?

Another great year for revivals. And why shouldn't forget about "Much Ado About Nothing"! I think "Downstate" like "Every Brilliant Thing" (which I had never heard of) and "Appropriate" (which I thought might be a new play given its limited exposure) would be considered a revival. But the one thing that's consistent about rules and regulations of any awards committee is their inconsistency!

It seems plausible, but I cannot ever remember a time that many letters were crammed on to that marquee

Just confirmed that Downstate transfer is happening, they’re putting up the marquee letters at the Booth Theatre. Here’s a video from Broadway Up Close. https://www.instagram.com/p/DcJ6tb3D7oS/?hl=en

Very much looking forward to revisiting this - it was phenomenal off Broadway.

I thought MacKinnon’s direction was very strong, but intrigued as to why Mantello is now stepping in (besides the fact that he’s chummy with Rudin). Either way, interested to see his take. I trust him implicitly after DOAS.

He is one of our greatest Broadway actors. He is waaaay overdue. I hope they remember him come Tony time if this closes before February. And I hope this wins Best Play as well. To say that this is the most thought provoking plays in the modern era would still be an understatement. I can’t wait how Joe Martello would weave his expertise in directing ensemble plays. This play was already a masterpiece. I hope he can make it even better on Broadway if that’s even possible. And I hope they do get some of the Steppenwolf actors as well.

This is one of a handful of shows I’ve left at intermission. Really didn’t get the love for it from what I saw, but I’d be curious to revisit (finish) under Mantello’s direction.

In total agreement that K. Todd Freeman is very overdue for his Tony. Airline Highway should have been his win.

It is very strange there’s been no press release. I guess Rudin is going rogue on this one?

Re: Downstate Premiering on Broadway this Fall?

I would think even it being a new production that K. Todd Freeman will be involved since he just did Salesman with Mantello

that being said that Steppenwolf production was simply phenominal and will be hard to top.

Glad we are getting a Mantello production of this. The play, although hard to swallow at times, was much better than the production/direction itself. They'll be smart to recast (most if not all). Fresh start.
