It just happened a few hours ago. I doubt the timeline for building repairs and re-opening has been discussed. They are still investigating the fire. People can imagine all these scenarios but we will know when an official statement comes out.

It just means there is no known reopening date yet. Chill.

Huh? I was just asking a question.

Everything in the production would have been damaged and everything will need renewing. The producers have the decide whether to close the show or move theatre. Don’t know if there is a spare tour set if they decide to move? This could be the Australian or UK one if no American one isn’t available.

Will the insurance pay out the pay cheques for cast and crew?

If it is eventually revealed THE BOOK OF MORMON has closed permanently (which could very well be the case, as their grosses have softened a lot these last few years), it will have played 28 previews and 5,620 regular performances.

It is the 10th-longest running show in Broadway history.

As of right now (Monday 5/4 at 4pm) tickets are still on sale for all future performances (including tomorrow night). I wonder why they are taking so long to take at least some of the immediate performances offsale?

I imagine that if the building must be closed for the short term, like 6 months or fewer, they will be able to ride it out thanks to insurance and the money behind the production. If we’re looking at a longer timeframe, then I have to think that closure will be likely. But there isn’t enough information to go off of right now.

i don’t know how long folks working on the production will receive full paychecks for, though. At some point, they will likely have to enter a layoff and have to go on unemployment.

A lot of folks left the theater on Sunday evening under the very safe assumption that they had the rare good, steady job on Broadway. That was suddenly shattered in just the span of a couple hours this morning. My heart goes out to them all.

Again, do they consider changing theaters, especially if the set isn't damaged?

You clearly don't understand the costs of loading in and loading out a set that was not designed to be portable. Also, the FDNY isn't going to allow anyone into the building until it's inspected.

Wow this sucks for them. Hopefully they can fix it all up as soon as possible.

That probably has to be done remotely since they probably are not letting box office staff in the building. I suspect that will happen later today.

Sincerely hope that the insurance will pay out these contracts. I don't know anything about insurance. What happened during COVID?

It is not going to close.
Feel free to come back here quote me and kick me if I’m wrong, but the show is still running on London, on the road, and multiple international tours. It’s made more money than God or the Angel Moroni and they’re not going to let the Broadway production close overnight because of an insurance accident. (Let alone on the eve of what was to be The biggest celebration of the show since its opening.)

There’s no way to guess what the extent of the damage is at this point- for all we know it will be back up and running by Labor Day, or even sooner. But even if they can’t get it back by the holidays, between insurance, money made from other productions, and yes, if need be, a small temporary infusion from the creators, they can ride this out.  (To say “they don’t need it” when talking about Stone and Parker is technically true but tone-deaf – the creators of South Park can easily afford a negligible investment to ensure it doesn’t close like this.)

In fact even in the worst case scenario I can easily imagine a timeline where the show reopens a year from now, with the 15th-anniversary celebration reconstituted in some way (with an asterisk next to the “15”), and because of the circumstances and savvy marketing and audiences being ready to see it again, it suddenly becomes one of the hottest tickets in town again for a year or two, which alone would make the reopening worthwhile.
Hopefully it doesn’t take half that long however. (And yes my hearts go out to the current cast and crew, likely to be the ones most affected by this for the near future.)
