Sometimes she drinks in bed.
Sometimes he's homosexual.
But why be vicious?
They keep it out of sight!
Good show!
They're gonna be all right.
And so,
We're gonna be all right.
Hi ho!
We're gonna be all right!

"Careful the things you say
Children will listen
Careful the things you do
Children will see and learn
Children may not obey, but children will listen
Children will look to you for which way to turn
Co learn what to be
Careful before you say "Listen to me"
Children will listen

Careful the wish you make
Wishes are children
Careful the path they take
Wishes come true, not free
Careful the spell you cast
Not just on children
Sometimes the spell may last
Past what you can see
And turn against you
Careful the tale you tell
That is the spell
Children will listen"

Joey, that's one of my favourites too!!! I can't understand why they changed the lyric for the show...Well, it would have at least spiced-up the otherwise bland show re: Favorite Sondheim Lyric?

"Sometimes people leave you, halfway through the wood
Others may deceive you, you decide whats good
And you decide alone, but no one is alone
Someone is on your side, someone else is not..."

"Somebody, need me too much,
Somebody, know me too well,
Somebody, pull me up short
And put me through hell
And give me support
For being alive,
Make me alive."

"With the sea at our gate, we'll have kippered herring
Wot have swum to us straight from the Straits of Bering
Ev'ry night, in the kip, when we're through our kippers,
I'll be there slippin' off your slippers"

"I'll warm me bones on the esplanade,
Have tea and scones with me gay young blade,
Then I'll knit a sweater
While you write a letter
Unless we've got better to do-oo"

"But a seaside wedding could be devised,
Me rumpled bedding legitimized
Me eyelids'll flutter,
I'll turn into butter,
The moment I mutter I do-hoo"

"By the sea, in our nest, we could share our kippers
With the odd paying guest from the weekend trippers,
Have a nice sunny suite for the guest to rest in,
Now and then, you could do the guest in"

all from "By the Sea"
which is just brilliant

I love Sweeney Todd

It's the people that you hate together,
Bait together,
Date together,
That make marriage a joy.
It's things like using force together,
Shouting till you're hoarse together,
Getting a divorce together,
That make perfect relationships.
Uh-huh...
Kiss-kiss...
M-hm...

:]

Also, pretty much all of "A little Priest" and "Getting Married Today"

and just for fun:

TALL AND TENDER, LIKE AN APOLLO,
HE GOES WALKING BY, AND I HAVE TO FOLLOW HIM,
THE BOY FROM TACAREMBO LA TUMBE DEL FUEGO SANTA MALIPAS ZATATECAS LA JUNTA DEL SOL Y CRUZ. ("crooth")

Here's some shepherd's pie peppered with actual shepherd on top.

I chose and my life was shaken. So what? The choice may have been mistaken. The choosing was not.

And a person should celebrate everything passing by.

"Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours...
Making my entrance again with my usual flair;
Sure of my lines...
No one is there."

so so many, but I'll only list a few.

I have to third
"I chose and my world was shaken, so what? The choice may have been mistaken, the choosing was not."
from Sunday

then from Merrily, "Good Thing Going"-
"And if I wanted too much was that such a mistake at the time? You never wanted enough- alright, tough, I don't make that a crime."

from Follies "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs"-
"Life was fun but oh so intense, everything was possible and nothing made sense!"

Any line from "No One Is Alone" or "Move On".
And my favorite humorous one would be from ALNM "You Must Meet My Wife"

-She'd strike you as un-enlightened...
-No, I'd strike her first!

Judy, Liza, Barbara, Bette, these are names I shant forget.

In my top 10 of favorite musicals Sondheim occupies 4 Spots with Sweeney as my favorite and then SITPWG, ITW and Company in there as well. However, my favorite lyric comes from Pacific Overtures:

Never mind a small disaster.
Who's the stronger, who's the faster?
Let the pupil show the master
Next!

From SITPWG:

"Anything you do, let it come from you. Then it will be new. Give us more to see" from Move On

and

"So much love in his words... forever with his colors...
how George looks... he can look forever... what does he see? ...his
eyes so dark and shiny... so careful... so exact..."

Almost all of Follies, Sweeney, Into the Woods, and A Little Night Music, with special emphasis on the last, but specific lyrics:

"Very young and very old hat; everybody has to go through stages like that" from Waiting for the Girls Upstairs

"There's a lot I'll have missed, but I'll not have been dead when I die" from The Miller's Son

"Why, I make more money than... than... than Calvin Coolidge! PUT TOGETHER!"
~Lina Lamont

"Love's not a constant demand,
It's a gift you bestow
Love isn't sudden surrender
It's tender and slow, it must grow."

and

"Call it what you will
This is not love, this is a reverse
Like a curse, something out of control
I've begun to fear
For my soul..."

from Is This What You Call Love from Passion. but pretty much the whole song is amazing.

Its been mentioned in this thread before, but pretty much all of "Chrysanthemum Tea", but especially this part:

In the tea, my Lord,
The chrysanthemum tea
An informal variation
On the normal recipe.
Though I know my plan had merit,
It's been slow in execution.
If there's one thing you inherit,
It's your father's constitution,
And you're taking so long, my Lord
Do you think I was wrong, my Lord?

From the Into The Woods Demo..

"How Do You Say"

How do you say to your child in the night
nothings all black, but nothings all white.

How do you say that it will all be alright
When you know that it might not be true, What do you do
I don't understand.
How do you say when you look at your mother, and think did i come from that.
I don't understand.

What do you leave to your child when your dead
only whatever you put in it's head, things that your mother and father have said, which was left to them too.

I don't understand.

I am unfinished,
I am diminished
With or without you
We do not belong together,
And we should have belonged together
What made it so right together
Is what made it all wrong
No one is you, George
There you agree,
But others will do, George
No one is you and
No one can be,
But no one is me, George,
No one is me
We do not belong together
And we'll never belong-!
You have a mission,
A mission to see
Now I have one too, George
And we should have belonged together

- "We Do Not Belong Together", SITPWG

And here's to the girls who just watch
Aren't they the best?
When they're depressed, it's a bottle of Scotch
Plus a little jest
Another chance to disapprove
Another brilliant zinger
Another reason not to move
Another vodka stinger
I'll drink to that

- "The Ladies Who Lunch", Company

"Your eyes, George. I love your eyes, George"

"You could tell me not to go! say it to me. tell me not to go! tell me that you're hurt, tell me you're relieved, tell me that you're bored. ANything. But don't assume I know. Tell me what you feel." "What I feel? You know exactly how I feel. Why do you insist you must hear the words? When you know I can not give you words."

"And then in bed Georg, I mean he kneads me. I mean like dough, George!" (I just think that's so clever)

I chose, and my world was shaken-
So what?
The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not
You have to move on

Look at what you want,
Not at where you are,
Not at what you'll be-
~"Move On" from Sunday

And, it's not technically a lyric, but:
Hey, buddy, don't be afraid it won't be perfect. The only thing
to be afraid of really is that it won't be.
~"Being Alive" from Company
