It's been a few decades- but it was either the last performance- at the Winter Garden- of Carnival with Anna Maria Alberghetti- or Fiorello.

Beauty and the Beast, Palace Theatre, 1997. Starring Kerry Butler as Belle, Chuck Wagner as the Beast, and Marc Kudisch as Gaston. I was hooked.

Grease (the Laura Osnes revival). Next night was The Color Purple (saw Fantasia's understudy but she was brilliant). Night after that was A Chorus Line. It was a pretty great week.

On tour: "No, No, Nanette" (the revised version directed by Busby Berkeley and Burt Shevelove) with Loni Ackerman, Evelyn Keyes and Benny Baker in 1973. I was 11, and I remember it vividly.
On Broadway: "A Chorus Line" in 1977. Paul's monologue changed my life. I knew that there was a world where I could be accepted and loved, and it gave my messed up 15-year-old self such hope. And oh my lord, the brilliance of everything about it.

Mame with Angela Lansbury, August 1983 Gershwin Theatre. Life-changing. And also my first experience with the shock/disappointment of a show I loved being a flop.

Catch Me If You Can, where I finally got to see Norbert Leo Butz live and watched Aaron Tveit almost wipeout on the stairs during his exit at the end of Act I.

THE MUSIC MAN with Preston and Cook. Though I can't remember anything else that happened that year, I can still remember that experience like it was yesterday. My mother told me I got quite upset when the show ended.
The first year I got to choose the shows myself was on my twelfth birthday. A matinee of GOLDEN BOY with Sammy Davis Jr. and that evening FUNNY GIRL with Barbra Streisand. What a day that was for a young theatre goer. And with orchestra seats costing only $9.90 back then it became a cherished yearly ritual for me.

Phantom of the Opera when I was maybe 10. I played the soundtrack (on cassette) so much that it broke.

Jelly's Last Jam in 1993 was my first on Broadway. Then the following year, i saw Guys and Dolls and Miss Saigon and then nothing else on Broadway until 2011 (moved away, no money for flying back). The tour of Next to Normal coming to my town followed by listening to the OBCR over and over again and realizing that i had just missed the OBC by a couple of months is what started me coming on fairly regular long weekend trips a few years ago to try to catch the OBCs performing in as many musicals as i can catch.

I just found the Playbill and ticket while cleaning out some old things...
Beauty and the Beast in July 1997, two days after my seventh birthday. Kerry Butler and Chuck Wagner as the titular twosome.
$70 for rear orchestra in the Palace. Was just looking at prices for An American in Paris and 18 years later, the same seat is just over double the cost.
