Not sure if this is the right thread but I saw Hamilton last night and wanted to give my 2c. Summary:
Exceptional: Jin Ha (Burr), Tamar Greene (Washington)
Very Good: James Monroe Inglehart (Jefferson), Krystal Joy Brown (Eliza), J. Quinton Johnson (Mulligan/Madison)
Good: Migeul Cervantes (Hamilton), James Monroe Inglehart (Lafayette), Mandy Gonzales (Angelica), all other roles
Yes I split out JMI's two roles as his Jefferson is much better than his Lafayette.
I almost put J. Quinton Johnson in exceptional but the role doesn't have enough to work with to be standout - but this guy has a lot of potential. Forgive me if he is well known but as the only major sub for the night (he's not in the playbill, I don't know his official role) I was very impressed. I liked him better than Oak. It looks like he's gong to a writer's workshop so if he originates a role out of that I wouldn't be surprised.
Jin Ha and Tamar Greene were so very good. Jin Ha shows a beautiful, smooth arrogance that fits the Burr character so well. His singing was excellent as well. I think without a comparison anyone would find him fantastic. When you compare to Leslie Odom Jr. though he is missing a bit of subtly, mostly on the anger side. Wait For It was still a knock out but Leslie can make you cry. It can be an unfair comparison.
Tamar has a great authority presence and sense of urgency to his Washington. His acting is and singing were excellent - you really felt like he was the character. One Last Time brought the house down - it certainly had the most enthusiastic reception. I am not sure if this is normal for the song.
Going in I was most excited to so James Monroe Inglehart and Mandy Gonzalez. I loved James in Aladdin and Mandy in In The Heights. As someone said before James' Lafayette leaves much to be desired, but it was fine. His Jefferson was much better, and a lot more fun. He has a different rhythm for the rapping which made it a bit more musical. I think he is a great replacement but it's no comparison to Daveed. Same with Mandy. I thought she did great but rapping is certainly not her strong suit. She did fine but does not knock it out of the park like Renee. IMO the roles don't play to their strengths.
Miguel Cervantes was fine as Hamilton. He felt a bit off more me in the beginning (probably the hardest part to nail with all of that rapping) and grew on me as the show went. Krystal Joy Brown was great as Eliza - she showed great vulnerability in the beginning and made a great transition to irritated, then heartbroken/annoyed, to utterly devastated, back to smoothed over (forgiveness). Thinking about it now Eliza has a lot of major character development whereas a lot of the other characters don't have to evolve so much. Krystal's singing was fantastic.
Euan Morton as the king was more "kingly" a less playful than Jonathan Groff's take. He was fine.
I think anyone going into the show blind, or somewhat familiar with the material, would have a great time. Anyone very familiar with the cast recording or OBC filmed on stage will be making the sometimes (almost unfair) comparisons. I think as the show and the OBC have a much larger exposure than your normal show these comparisons will likely continue. Perhaps why James and Mandy are sitting in their roles for a bit (plus its a good gig). I know in the beginning it was a bit slow to find replacements for Lafayette/Jefferson and Angelica.
All in all, I had a great time, and very pleased that the show runners are still putting great care into holding the show to a high standard. It did not feel diluted from the original at all. Any comments I had were on individual performances/takes but overall I feel like everything from the original concept has been preserved.
