For some reason, not everything appears under "shop all," so make sure to check out both souvenirs and apparel. Also, you can see a fan on the homepage image, but it doesn't appear on the shop yet.

So I guess it's not DOA after all lol.

There is a lot to criticize about the internet but its memory is impeccable.

When you go to the floor, you pass by bag check. You can bring your phone to the dance floor and you can bring anything you would wear - so a cross body bag, or I heard them saying that if you had a coat and kept it on the whole time, you could bring that too. But anything not physically attached to your body has to be checked. They have slap bracelets with numbers and that's your "tag" to get your stuff later. It took maybe five minutes for me to get my purse back after the show yesterday - they were very organized and quick.

Can someone describe what the orchestra level was like below the mezz overhang? Was the audience all the way under, filling the entire section? Being upstairs I obviously couldn’t see that.

As for my original experience of the show, I saw it at the Public seated. And loved it. I repeat.  LOVED it.  Got the T shirt, got the cast album, one of the last decades great theatrical experiences. So I thought when it opened in The Shed at the National Theatre in London I definitely wanted to see it there, this time on the floor. And I did not enjoy it nearly as much. My Brit friend whom I took was confused as to why I had gone on and on about the piece (however he also didn't enjoy another of my fave American pop musicals of that time period, Murder Ballad, in a slightly inferior London production with Ramin Karimloo in the Will Swenson role). So when I see it on Broadway I will be definitely seated. I wish the rush tickets were for the mezz...

Thanks so much for this, while I'm bummed people don't check cell phones (the losers who need to live stream it for their channel!), it's nice to know there is a place to put your stuff. In the Winter though, that could get a little hairy.

My Filipino boyfriend, who suffered under the horribly oppressive Marcos regime, refuses to see any show that "humanizes" them, as Evita did. Can anyone who's seen the show (in any version) tell me if it presents them as the awful people they actually were?

I have not seen this version. I did see it at the Public and loved it. I don’t see how anyone could walk out of the show thinking positive things about them. I was really excited to see it again but my Filipino friend (who has not seen the show but has read about it) basically explained to me how not every audience member is as analytical as I and may be confused by the fact that it’s a essential a fun musical about an evil person. Also that it’s really for (white) people who don’t know the history who can enjoy the first half without knowing how horrible they become and written by a white man. Idk he made a very passionate argument despite my protestations and I don’t feel like I can get a ticket after hearing all his thoughts-more because I would feel guilty if he knew I saw it than because I necessarily agree.

That's what he's worried about - a "fun" musical about two horrible despots. Do you leave the show with a good idea of how awful they were?

From my white-didn’t know the history til I saw it at the public-perspective the final third is about the people of the Philippines and how horrible the Marcos’ were to them. My friends point was also that in a musical that for the first third or so has you sorta rooting for them has to water down the atrocities. But that said it is a disco musical and the encore song at least at the public was still a fun one

Mark,

Another thought re perception by Filipinos. The show has (I feel confident saying without checking) more Filipino producers and actors than any show in Broadway history (possibly more than all shows put together). Some of them have been outspoken on certain topics and I expect that, as we inch toward the opening, we will hear from some of them more. Your question is one that I would think they would love to answer, and discuss. And obviously their input would eclipse anything those of us on here who are white might offer.

Has anyone who has seen the show sat in the Floor Side seats, first or second row?  If so, are there any problems with the 2nd row seats?  Or the first row?  I'm very confused about how the sightlines would be, but it sounds like those would be the closest to the action without standing on the floor.  Or how did those seats look from other perspectives?  Thanks for any information on those two rows.

I know many Filipinos are involved, but that does not mean the show does not gloss over what happened. They need the work, so I don't expect them to demand historical accuracy.

"But that said it is a disco musical and the encore song at least at the public was still a fun one"

That's exactly what he's concerned about.

Mark,

I was really referring mostly to the producers who have invested in the show and raised money from other Filipinos.  He may know one or more of them, or know of them. You might also have a look at the reviews of the original production. It would not surprise me if there was some coverage of that production (and others) from within the community. At the end of the day, your bf is going to have to make an assessment.

Below the Mezz overhang is the VIP lounge/seats section where they have their own bar. There's a ramp so it seems to be wheelchair accessible as well.

I tried to look for photos on Here Lies Love instagram but found one from one of the co-producers where you can see David Korins too:

https://www.instagram.com/p/Ctnt2UNuZcO/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

On top is the front mezzanine section and below is the VIP lounge/seats area.

First preview was sold out and I felt there was definitely room to dance in the dance floor. It didn't feel overcrowded at all.

We'll see where the rush seats are on Tuesday but I have feeling they'll only sell rush to fill the rear mezz area but who knows!

I'm curious where the house seats are. In a traditional theater, they tend to be row F/G/H in center orchestra but I'm not sure about this one. The VIP lounge? Front center mezz? Floorside seats?  Standing/dancing tix?

There are 44 million Filipinos, so the chance of him knowing someone involved in the show is astronomically small. I do know how to read reviews - they did not answer this question, which is why I asked it here.

Hi Mark. I understand the concern you and your bf have. You might find that the tone of the piece or the idea of “dancing” with the Marcoses is truly vile. I do think the show is geared more toward non-Filipino audiences who don’t know the history and atrocities of these people and how their legacy is actually alive and well (and running the Philippines). The show, after all, was written and created by white people. The Filipino producers and talent who were brought on might bring in more of a nuanced perspective on the subject matter, but it is being marketed as a fun night at the disco. I’m Filipino and had a blast at the Public, but I don’t have immediate ties to the Philippines, so I do have that distance that some don’t.

If you’re wondering the viewpoint of the production, this was addressed in a post on their IG account back in January. Back then, they said:

WHY NOW?

History repeats itself. Democracies all over the world are under threat. The biggest threat to any democracy is disinformation; Here Lies Love offers a creative way of re-information - an innovative template on how to stand up to tyrants.

WHY ON BROADWAY?

We cannot tell the modern history of the Philippines without the United States. They're intertwined.

Here Lies Love is an anti-Marcos show. It is a pro-Filipino show, being told in a quintessential American form: the Broadway musical. Two cultures, two histories, continuing a centuries-old complicated dance.

That's exactly the problem - it's presenting these despots as "fun" to a white audience. Just saying that it's an anti-Marcos show doesn't address the damage done if they are portrayed sympathetically. Are they?
