"It shows how ignorant even theatre people can be to the outside world."
THANK YOU.
" I just love knowing how stupid people are. I was waiting at the stagedoor for wicked last summer.
Women: Yeah, I was here a few months ago and saw Idina and Kristin in the show. Me: Oh, really? Idina and Kristin haven't been with the show for a while. Maybe you saw Eden? Women: (Almost offended) No. I saw Idina. "
Oh, I see. If someone is mistaken about an actor, that means they are stupid.
After Wicked got out I heard this lady ask when The 39 Steps would be coming back this next week for the Holidays. The 39 Steps played at the theatre before Wicked but she thought that it was possible for a play and a musical spectacle to go on and off for each other.
I think it's the ignorance of the poster in what makes it so funny... They believe their knowledge is superior than an audience member who use an alternative word.
i've worked in ticketing and have had NUMEROUS tourists butcher show names, like "jersey girls", "the king of the lions", "q street" or "vicks" (wicked); but the worst i ever came across was the germans who, for some bizarre reason, who would mess up "the color purple" by calling it "ze colored people". this happened on more than one occasion. all i could say was, "wow, really?"
people will never cease to amaze me...
"the stage too must experiment - with ideas, with the psychological relationship of men and women, with speech and rhythm forms, with dance and movement, with color and light - or it must and should become a museum product. in an age of terrific implications as to wealth and poverty, as to the function of government, as to peace and war, as to the relation of the artist to all these forces, the theatre must grow up. the theatre must become conscious of the implications of the changing social order, or the changing social older will ignore, and rightly, the implications of the theatre." - hallie flanagan, director of the federal theatre project

"That made me so mad, I wanted to correct them both, but I was afraid if I did, then I would do it rather loudly and embarrass everyone around me. It just pisses me off when igorant theatre goers think that movie-musicals are original, and they the actual stage plays were made years later."
I actually DID think that The Sound of Music was a stage adaptation of the movie when I first heard about it. I had no idea when I was nine that there was a revival playing Broadway!

ATTENTION FANS: I will be played by James Barbour in the upcoming musical, "BroadwayWorld: The Musical."
At the closing performance of Ragtime, we were going crazy and clapping and catcalling for everything, so the old man behind me would audibly express his disdain for our disrespect. He kept kicking my head going "SHUT UP!"
I might have kicked you, too, since you admit to "going crazy and catcalling for everything".
So: Good for the old man.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Are you making fun of people's accents? Are you aware that W is pronounced as a V in some countries? Many tourists are from non-English speaking countries and their grasp of our language isn't always very good. It's the same as if you went to Spain or France and made a mistake while trying to speak the language. Could be that some person will be talking about you on a message board.

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
And of course add to that: not all words translate the same way in all languages.
And this person WORKS with tourists. How dare they not know our language impeccably.

the tone of this whole thread is sickening. Making fun of people who don't know as much as you do about theater. And you know why they don't? Because they DON'T CARE! you all have made it your business to try and know everything about the comparatively unimportant topic of broadway (yes, unimportant in the general scope of the world).
I'm sure you all know nothing about certain other aspects of life and make mistakes every day which could be considered stupid by others that are more in the know than you are.
Well, yes, Jane, of course we would. That's why we are here. When we say something stupid about, say, ENGINEERING, I'm sure that engineering geeks get a great laugh about it, too.
Note: I say "geek" lovingly. I am proud to be a theater geek, through and through.
There is nothing WRONG about having fun with people's mistakes on a THEATER Board. We're aren't kicking puppies.

Thank you, dramamama. I had meant to point that out but it just flew out of my head while I was typing.
As for the tone of the thread I think the pendulum swings both ways. Some of the posts in the thread do border on mean (like the one about the tourist misprouncing things) but those are the ones who show the stupidty of the poster not the people who are being spoken about. But some of them are genuinely funny and should be shared. I'll reiterate one that I posted in this thread almost two years ago. It was the second act of Hairspray during "Timeless to Me". A little girl sitting behind me whispered to her mother "Mommy, what does timeless mean?" The mom paused as if to consider how to describe the word before whispering back "never gets old". The girl digests this information before whispering "Mommy, you're not timeless". I just about lost it.

No, but you are most definitely saying things like "I can't believe how stupid people are", or how "unbelievable the ignorance is", etc.
Don't be making value judgments of people because they pronounced a stage actor's name wrong. Perhaps the personal insults could be left out of the posts.
jane...you've been around these boards often enough to know that THAT is never going to change. Some people just feel good about being nasty.
MOST of the posts here are innocent and fun. Berating all for a few that aren't isn't useful.

i'm really not trying to insult anyone and i'm sorry if i did. trust me, i understand tourists accents and difficultly with english. having traveled numerous places were I am the one with the language barrier i understand their pain and am always VERY patient with them. the only one that continually caught me by surprise was 'the colored people' usage. really, does no one else find the use of this term weird? this isn't like a mispronunciation, it's almost derogatory.
ps. sorry i'm just now getting back to this thread, i haven't been on bww in a while.

as people were leaving Next to Normal a few weeks ago, "Gee, I really think I need to be on some of those drugs." and someone approaching the merch table saying in a whisper "can I have one of the pillboxes please."
