Flawless. She sounded amazing! Wish she could've done it on the regular Radio City stage, where her movements wouldn't have been so restrictive. Love that they included a bit of dialogue before the song!

"I like the song for its melody but find some of the lyrics a bit idiotic"
Something that I always feel weird about is:
I’ll love our children, both fiercely and well
1. Do people ever really say they love their children 'fiercely'? Or for that matter, does anyone ever say "I love our children well"?
2. Is there a qualitative difference between loving your children 'fiercely' and also loving them 'well'? Why are both necessary?
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I remember shortly after Idina won her Tony, one could be all but massacred on these boards for having positive feelings for Menzel. So this thread is warming my teenage heart.
Not to thread jack, but just wondering for those who have seen it? What's the run time of the show? I have tickets for 8pm and was trying to see a 54 Below show at 11...

Yeah, it was just the raw sound to it. If she could do that without hurting her voice, great. I'm no expert on belting so I'll defer to everyone's opinion.
Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

But back to the performance. Just rewatched it, amazing. I loved some of the different phrasing she used

Was at the tubs here, and the Tonys were playing on the big screen in the lounge. A whole roomful of west coast f*gg*ts thought she was complete sh*t. Meanwhile we all fell in love with James Monroe Iglehart. And the shirtless boy was pretty to look at. How soon 'til Aladdin tours?

I'm not sure that a song not providing a suitable background atmosphere for masturbating strangers really proves anything.
Meh, I really do not see the appeal of her, the song or the show. I have friends that are vocal coaches telling their students if they are caught trying to sing like IM they will drop them as students. She sets a great example of what not to do to your voice. Also Loud Does Not Equal Good.
I'm proud of her as well and SO glad they had her sing that song!!!!!
Is it just me, though, or did she sound like she was singing a little lower than she normally sings it? She was still flawless and I still LOVED it, but I don't remember her singing it that low when I saw her.
She has very expressive eyes. Next time I see her in something I definitely have to remember to sit close so I can watch her face (I love actors that are expressive like that).
I can't stand Wicked or Rent. I'm not a Menzel fan. But, I was pretty impressed. The song seemed to be more about belting than about the text, but after reading so many negative reports on this score I was pleasantly surprised to find the song pretty good - it felt like there may even be a very good song in there struggling to get out. Especially if you don't pay too much attention to the lyrics and Menzel sang very well. I'm sure that performance sold a lot of tickets.
"it felt like there may even be a very good song in there struggling to get out."
A few chunks of the song were cut from the performance (and it therefore wasn't as good as it could be), so I'd definitely recommend listening to version on the cast recording.
It was a gorgeous performance from Idina, even when taken out of context
