Idina Menzel did a much better job tonight compared to her vocally frightening performance a decade ago of "Defying Gravity." She still tends to be on the cusp of flatting but her voice was generally in good form compared to when she won for WICKED.
In a night of few worthwhile performances IMO, she was simply the best. I want to see the show but better hurry because I have a feeling it will not last long once Ms. Menzel's leaves it. BTW - thought it was funny how Jonathan Groff introduced her with the words , "the wickedly talented".
"I like the song for its melody but find some of the lyrics a bit idiotic."
I think you've just described the entire show, not just one song!

Nailed it. I'm so proud of her, best live televised performance of her career. I wish the stars would have aligned to give her a better show coming off the momentum of Frozen, but it is what it is. I will say I'm enjoying the recording so much more than I did the show itself.

loved it. loved her. For the person that asked.. the show get out abt 10:45 -50. an 11 pm show at 54 below is cutting it close.
I thought she was outstanding. It made me want to see the show, and the only other number that did that was the Aladdin number.
"But I imagine she's not going to appreciate how she looks when she see's the playback. "
What an idiotic and mean thing to say.

She's ugly as f*ck when belting and I was afraid she was going to come through the television screen and devour me whole. That song was also the biggest pile of crap I've ever heard.
NO WONDER IF/THEN DIDN'T GET ANY RECOGNITION AT THE TONYS. BECAUSE IT DIDN'T DESERVE IT.

Consider the source.
I may be in the minority but I love people's expressions when they sing, especially Idina's. It just tells me they aren't holding back to look a certain way/ they're being completely vulnerable. That's just my perception of it though!
Flawless. She sounded amazing! Best performance of the night!

Also, when you consider the context of the song....she's not necessarily supposed to look pretty given what she's going through
Based on seeing a naughty version of the show, Mrs R got tickets on TDF.She loves the score & the show. We are seeing it Thursday. She is a little bummed they do not have a "What The ****" T shirt. Her performance on the Tonys was great
Why can she perform 8 times a week and others like Ramin need rest one day a week? Both are very taxing vocally.
Imagine if someone ever suggested one day of rest for Merman. She would have bodily thrown them out a window.

I'm pretty sure it received two nominations which means it WAS recognized by the Tonys. You sound really mad and upset. I'm sure Idina and crew are cool as a cucumber sitting at home collecting her checks from If/Then and Frozen's box office success and the satisfaction of her killer performance while you're sitting at home punching your walls in.
A bit strong. Why is it necessary to bring someone's appearance into it? You are wrong on all counts.
I thought her singing was good, though she did over-reach and show off vocally too much for any real emotion to come through, but, the song was horrible. I wish she and Chenoweth had performed "For Good" instead.
Wicked spot was there because the producers paid for it. They reached the entire nation and a ton of people who have not seen it. A different song would have been better but honestly I was never enthralled by Wicked .

Perhaps the Wicked spot was there as payback from Idina's less than stellar Tony performance 10 years ago. Both of the Wicked gals sounded lovely. Not even a hint of that grating Chenoweth edge. Also, a million little girls and former little girls who saw one of the tours come through their town felt a connection to the Tony show with that being there.
I'm also in the camp who thought Idina was great in her number last night.

I'm sure she's happy with her performance.

I didn't mind the idea of including Wicked--I think it's nice to celebrate when a show reaches the amazing mark of running 10+ years. I wasn't a great tribute, though. Thought what they did with Rent a few years back was a little more heartfelt.
I just saw her performance. I LOVED IT.
Dynamite performance of song that breaks my heart every time I hear it.
Beautiful performance. My mother started crying in the middle of it.
Someone asked earlier about the lyrics.
I believe the lyric is
"I'll love our children both fiercely and well" instead of "I love our children..."
She sounded absolutely fantastic. I noticed that there was something different about her voice. It sounded a little more...I really have no idea what word to use. But she did sound different. But it sounded fantastic. My friend who was watching with me (who isn't that big of a theater nut) loved it and has been singing "Ev'ry live we're living" part since haha. Her facial expressions, I personally think, fit the context of the song. I know that I pull some pretty weird faces when I'm on the verge of tears, and during that entire last verse, you could tell that she was on the verge of tears.
