I'm really surprised at the reaction here.  Granted, I saw this in Boston last year (?) and while I liked it well enough, I could't shake the feeling that it thought it was more meaningful than what was exhibited.   I think it was at the Huntington.

Certainly could be the direction and/or cast - and certainly don't know if there was any work done on the script.

Good to hear it's being well rec'd - even if my experience wasn't.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Yes, I saw it in Boston as well. It was okay. Some mid-play dramatic developments seemed more convenient than organic, but given the new production, performers, time for rewrites, etc., it's obviously more than possible my misgivings might no longer be valid.

I really don’t know why the website continues to say the show is 105 minutes, and when I asked the usher tonight he said it was 100 mins. The show is two hours. Those 20 mins make a big difference if you have to be somewhere after.

(Loved the show, just had to rush getting out.)

Thanks for saying this. It makes a huge differenxe for people who have to travel in and out of the city! Also, I’m fighting a brain tumor and the treatment makes me need the bathroom quite a bit and those 20 minutes can make a big difference and it helps to know how much longer I have to wait. Lots of reasons this info should be accurately given…

Unfortunately, this is very common these days.

I certainly liked this, but I wasn’t blown away. The parallels and ties to The Crucible are interesting and well-explored. The performances are solid. It just all seemed a little "flat" to me for lack of a better word.

Go see this play now. Everything across the board was perfection. Rooting for this one!

Let me make my words very crystal clear: do not be surprised if this ends up winning the TONY Award for Best Play over Oh, Mary!. I haven’t stopped thinking about it ever since I saw the second preview (which didn’t even feel like it at all). Every single performance in this ensemble is exceptional, but especially Sadie Sink, Fina Strazza and Amalia Yoo who are the stand outs, and by god one of the best endings of a play I have ever seen…Go see this play, you’ll thank me later

I have to confess, today’s performance was ruined for me by the behavior of the audience around me. To my right, and in front of me were a group of teenage girls who proceeded to take photos and film to the entire performance. I watched several stretches of dialogue and the sequence in the end through the screen of the phone in front of me. There was not a usher in the mezzanine once. If I was not in the middle of the row during an intermission-less show, I would’ve gotten up and found one. Lucy Jones the entire experience was distracting and hard to focus and infuriating. I was so looking forward to this and I have sent a letter to the theater because I have hopes they may invite me back because of the fact there wasn’t an usher in the mezzanine the entire show. The house manager after was apologetic but didn’t seem fussed.

there’s a great play there and there’s some good performances, but it was really hard to enjoy and focus on the play with the constant distractions. I’m really getting to the point where I don’t wanna go to the theater anymore because of the behavior of the audiences. I’m fighting a brain tumor and the shows that I go to see are carefully chosen and things that I really wanna see because I don’t have much money to spend. I camp out for cheap tickets or hunt for discounts and then I go to the theater and the experience is ruined by selfish people. I really think I might be nearing the end of my theater going journey here in NYC. If house staff is not going to pay attention and take action, at these prices, it’s unacceptable. And yes, any usher in the booth mezzanine would’ve been able to see them. The girls were holding their phones up. I’m sure everybody in the mezzanine was affected by them and not just me.

The girl next to me sat through the first near 30 minutes with her camera app open desperately awaiting Sadie’s entrance so she could film it.

sorry for venting. Flames at the side of my face

I think we all need to be emailing the theaters about these incidents and they decide to actually do something. It's an abomination the audience behavior nowadays. Some people should stay home.

Also to the other poster who said this will win over Oh, Mary. I did enjoy this show quite a bit, but it is nowhere near as polished or as good in general as Oh, Mary. It's really Oh Mary or English competing for the tony this year. And it'll probably be the pulitzer winner.

won't happen.  There are multiple shows that would beat John Proctor.  So glad you liked it -but it's not winning.

Yeah, Im definitely aware it probably wont win but I do think it will definitely at least get nominated for Best Play. At this point I'm predicting this, English, The Hills of California, Oh, Mary! and Purpose to get nominated. I know some people think Dorian Gray will get nominated for Best Play but I don't know if it's being considered a new play or a revival?

I'm not sure, but I also don't think it got the reviews it needed to be a safe Play nominee. Gold Derby considers it new, but that could well change.

My currently predicted five are Oh, Mary! (Far and away the frontrunner), English, Stranger Things, and Purpose.

Why on earth would it be considered a revival? It's a new play, The fact that it's an adaptation of a novel doesn't make it a revival any more than The Outsiders was.

Absolutely *LOVED* this. One of my favorite things I've seen in a while. The entire ensemble is on fire. Sadie Sink is exceptional, and has the most pivotal role (talk about an amazing entrance), but this really is a show where no one is the star. Everyone was *exceptional* and the play was thought-provoking, funny, moving, and still easily digestible. Get tickets now before they become as expensive as Othello's.

I agree it will be considered for Best Play, but it's not really new. John Proctor is the Villain has previously been produced in Boston and Washington DC with completely different casts and directors. That's few enough productions that it won't be considered for Revival despite not being on Broadway before (unlike Appropriate last year, which had been produced all over the place for 10 years), but it's different from The Outsiders, which had a pre-Broadway run with the same creative team and most of the same cast, but was otherwise new.

I was responding to malcs98’s comment questioning whether Dorian Gray will be considered a revival.

Just saw this this afternoon and think they totally hit it out of the park! Not a weak link in the cast and I’m hard pressed to pick a favorite (I didn’t know Sadie Sink going in), but it’s really both the writing and direction that made it such a win for me. The pacing was so spot on, both in the way the play itself is written and in their delivery, couldn’t have asked for anything more.

The last three seconds gave me an instant lump in my throat… that’s how you perfectly conclude a play. Bravo.

I can’t remember the last time a season was so stacked with such great shows! A win for us all, really. Gonna be an exciting Tonys.
