It doesn't need to be all-black. Annie could easily be black with a mixed race cast.
Or it could just not get made at all.
We already had one atrocious movie made from this material...move on!

Honestly, it could be very good.
Isn't this old news? We knew about Jay Z the moment new knew about the film itself.
I also thought we knew this wasn't a film of the musical, but a totally fresh adaptation of the comic strip.
This movie keeps getting worse & worse.....
ACL you took the words right off my keyboard.
Call me when they cast OPRAH as Hannigan.
(or whatever they will call her).
LMAO @ all the reactions. You guys do tend to get over-dramatic about things.
So...what is he actually going to do? The songs are done.
Carlos,
This topic has been brought up before. It's you that seems to be over dramatic about it.
"Mariah Carey as Lily "
That made me laugh.
I actually think her parents could make a nice Rooster and Lily...and probably need to be in this to sell tickets.
Im sorry but I just have a problem in general with this movie...the iconic thing about annie whether its the comic or the musical is the little ginger girl, which clearly won't be happening with Willow. Honestly they should just not even call it Annie and call it Anz or some slang reinterpretation of the name Annie like they did with the Wiz because this will in no way resemble the original other than its about an orphan. If i were the Gray family I would be putting the kibosh on this project ASAP before it destroys Annies legacy.
**My issue is more Willow Smith, than the apparent colorblind casting which is really just nepotism, if say China Anne McLain, or Kiki Palmer (5 years ago) were playing the role it would be different because both of them have talent and have shown that, Willow is just brat on her fathers coat tails**
I disagree. I said this in a thread last year, I think that the story of Annie is at its heart a story of an impoverished little girl who teaches a rich man what it really means to be rich; to love.
I think Detroit is the perfect setting for it. There are a lot of very poor areas, especially now coming out of the recession.
Obviously a literal adaptation wouldn't work, but thematically it is a universal story.
Yes I agree with that, but my issue is Willow Smith and actually calling it Annie. When you basically place it almost a century in the future where orphanages don't exist, move its location from NYC to Detroit, change the musical from classic Broadway, to Hip Hop...its no longer Annie its "Annie from the Block" or "Annie Smith" just how I said The Wiz is thematically and basic story the same as The Wizard of Oz, but they changed so much its a separate entity, which is what this Annie will be.

I could care less what color Annie is as long as they stick to the source material. My biggest issue with this film is the fact the horrendously annoying Willow Smith is taking the part of Annie. Why not get someone unknown? Not a fan of nepotism. Not to mention we already have one Annie film that deviated heavily from the musical why do we need another one made? New songs by Jay-Z? What gives him credit for doing anything that could blend in with the source material. I almost guarantee this film takes the very basic outline of the musical and just takes the title. That's all this film and the musical will have in common.
It's "Addams Family The Musical" all over again. When the project was announced, everyone thought it would be an adaptation of the movie, then it was announced that it would be wholly original, only retaining the Family characters. What eventually made it to the stage was the loosest of all possible adaptations of those characters- a bunch of warm-hearted kooks in a haunted mansion. Gone were the deliriously kinky Gothic hipsters of the original television show, and even farther gone the absolutely unhinged, charismatic devil-worshipping and utterly hilarious psychopaths of the film series.
This Annie will be about an orphan girl and her wealthy foster father. It won't be the Charles Strouse musical. It will barely be the comic strip. But it's the same "heart."
Just so you fogies know, Jay-Z sampled ANNIE in one of his earliest songs. And shared credit with the musical's composers.
