I think you mean "does it really need to be explained?" I only listened to the whole score once--didn't care for it, but it is pretty high up on the register, isn't it? I disagree about Evan being a horrible, self-centered person, though. I think an empathetic audience will like and sympathize with him, but that doesn't mean the actor can just coast--obviously, he has to play the role in a way that the audience grasps who Evan is.

The only way I'd really consider this "stunt casting" is that he's in the sequel to that Netflix movie To All The Boys I've Loved Before during his run. Otherwise, this is a guy that has proven his musical theatre chops, whether it be on television, or in Hamilton - and you saying Hamilton stunt casts?

I just love everyone being so quick to call this "not stunt casting" because he's not Lady Gaga. This was def. deliberate. I'm sure if they wanted to find a POC, they could easily find someone who better suits the role. He doesn't read "Evan Hansen" at all. It's kind of a slap in the face to cast someone who is "hot and cool" to play this character in the first place. It's clearly done for a reason, and, no, I don't think he's going to make the box office sky rocket, but they've already announced all of his dates, so clearly they're doing so to appeal to some demographic.

This is in no way stunt casting - star casting, maybe, two can argue about how much star power he has. But he is certainly very capable of doing the role, which could make it star casting, not stunt casting. It's that good ol' discussion about star casting x stunt casting that always comes up in this board whenever someone famous or mildly famous is cast. It happened when Catherine Zeta Jones was cast in A Little Night Music and at pretty much every single time an actor stepped in for the role of Hedwig (even before the production had begun), for example.

In my opinion, this is not star casting either, I don't think he is famous enough to sell tickets, just a somewhat stablished actor. It's not like hordes of people are going to the Music Box just to see him. If we start calling casting anyone with some fanbase 'star casting' (or stunt casting), then the Dear Evan Hansen started doing that a long time ago, because I for one was very excited to see the show again when they cast Lisa Brescia as Evan's mom....

@MollyJeanneMusic - Maybe it is stunt casting. Maybe it’s not. He has bonafide Broadway experience. It’s not like the stunt casting happening over in Mean Girls. I’m not aware enough of now broad his appeal is. I do find the idea of him in this intriguing as I’ve never got to see him perform live, but I told myself after seeing it again (first time with Ben Platt) with Andrew, that I wouldn’t see it again on Broadway. No one is likely to come closer to holding a candle to Platt’s performance, in my book. But I live to be proven wrong. If the reports/reviews are unanimous that Fisher is great as Evan, I may have to reconsider.

As far as measuring whether a show is using stunt casting by whether your classmates know who they are, I know you said it’s not exact, but if Lin Manuel Miranda was cast in a show or Ben Platt, would you consider that stunt casting. Although both have some name recognition, they also both have legitimate reasons to be cast in a show based on their past theatrical experience.
