The first time I saw the show I was in a seat where the lights during Superstar were blindingly bright, I literally went into intermission like I had an eye exam. So I get the "squint-inducing" lighting comment.
That said, couldn't anyone at the Times been like, "Hey, so this phrasing? Considering the show, maybe find a replacement?" I didn't even think of it when I read it, but I'm not the audience who could be offended by it. And they should've thought of that.
