Okay you got me - you're a genius! Instead of spending millions on marketing, KPOP instead just paid a random dude (me) to post on the broadwayworld.com forum and convince one person at a time to see it. It's a bold strategy, but will be very interesting to see if it pays off long term for them!

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, as I'm not really in the know about anything behind the scenes of a production.

But does it cost anything to release tracks that already exist? By no means is it a full album, but there are at least 7 songs that have been fully recorded. I'm wondering why marketing isn't using them more; to my knowledge, only one of them (This is My Korea — TV edit) has been released publicly.

That depends on how that material is contractually allowed to be used. The one promotional track that exists is likely the only one that was recorded. Equity has rules on how performers are compensated andwhere, when, and how promotional material can be used.

Promotional tracks are not a cast recording and cannot be treated as such.

During the Instagram Live that Amy did on Playbill over the weekend, Amy confirmed an album was coming soon and one of the other members of RTMIS mentioned filming a video to tell people to pre-save the album. Not sure if this means the album is already done or if they’re going to record it soon, but it sounds like it’s forthcoming.

Looks like the cast and creatives have responded to The NY Times review and particularly didn’t like the “squint inducing” comment, citing racist tropes. I think that’s a bit of a stretch… even the wording might not be… the best… I highly doubt Jesse Green was trying to be racist in his review. But hey…whatever they need to do to sell tickets to that sinking ship…

Agreed. If you read it in context it’s clearly saying the lights are super bright. That’s it. No racism.

The remark that made me laugh was in Adam Feldman’s review in Time Out where he said the “well-drilled cast.” Meaning, the choreography…. But the wording …

I totally understand what Jesse Green meant, and I don't think he meant any harm by it, but part of the discourse around racial sensitivity isn't just for the people who are intentionally racist but for the terms/phrases used that might have had a negative connotation to a specific group of people. To be honest it's not something I had picked up on when reading the review (and I'm Asian myself) but to a large segment of the Asian population I think our eyes being described as "squinty" still triggers some bad memories.

On a broader scale, it does seem like their marketing has picked up with some videos of the different songs showing up in my Instagram feed and the comments generally seem to be excited about it (though not sure how many of those are production insiders). I saw it again this past weekend and having an enthusiastic audience really makes a difference as well. If they could afford to add glow sticks to their merch, I think that would only add to the experience (though I guess there's the hazard of them turning on at the wrong times).

Context is important. It was a critique of the lighting design, not the show itself.
