I also don't want to take up too much time/space about this issue of Darren's race, since this is a thread for Taye in Hedwig. I just wanted to add my views. I am of mixed race and although it's hard for others to determine the mix, it is obvious I am a person of color. (I am African-American, Asian, and a tiny part Peruvian.) My cousins, however, who are Asian/"white" pass for looking "white." They are proud of their Asian heritage and culture. So assuming that people are aware of their mixed race, they do wish that others acknowledge that they are Asian, that they also are persons of color, even if that "color" is not visible.
And yes, I didn't know Darren was part Filipino, based on photos I've seen of him. I'm glad someone informed me that he is a person of color as well.

I think yourheartcansing was irked because of the way skies phrased his question. He felt skies should have asked if Taye was the first black or African American to play 'Hedwig' as opposed to asking if Taye was the first person of color as "person of color" encompasses Asians, Latinos or any other ethnicity that is not considered "white" or Caucasian.
Anyway let's steer this baby back on topic and focus on Taye and Hedwig.

You're the person who came out on the offensive when I said I was excited for Taye to get the role, right? It caused you to use phonetic versions of street lingo, did it not?
It's okay by you to talk about now?
I've seen every Hedwig except for Andrew Rannells. I am definitely looking forward to Taye's turn on July 22nd! I hope they give him a ginormous afro!!

Fantastic original idea.

I should have clarified in this specific revival.
But I did see John Cameron Mitchell and Michael Cerveris at the Jane.
Maybe they could give Taye a Grace Jones flat top instead of an afro....
Just curious when was the last time Taye sang on stage, has he done any singing gigs in the last 10 years?

Taye has already said in interviews they are giving him modified versions of the usual wigs.

I thought it had to do with Taye using cacao as his engergy booster on stage, he even mentioned flavor.
I think Taye Diggs looks two masculine to be transgendered. However, having seen "Hedwig" for the first time last week, and having read comments on the thread, I now understand that Hedwig is not actually transgendered, but only gay, and took the opportunity to "leave something behind" to get out of East Germany.
Nonetheless, I find the story very difficult to follow -- is Billy really Hedwig's alter ego? This doesn't seem possible when Yitzchak opens the door and allows Billy's concert to waft in. So what is going on? A musical version of Harold Pinter?

Wow Audrey. This is obviously not the show for you and Taye's upcoming involvement is causing some sort of dissonance for you that is irreconcilable. That's fine. But maybe it's not a show for people with your point of view?
Maybe stick with Phantom.
So excited for Taye's return to Broadway...maybe we'll see some Rent cast alumni the opening week...

Not sure if this is new, but Taye Diggs is now listed in the Hurt Locker playbill.
