^ right. She only specifically called out jujamcyn in her own tweets. So, it’s odd they didn’t respond. I do think Lillias still needs to apologize as well.

Actors should not be breaking the fourth wall and addressing the audience to correct their behavior. You just keep going with the scene. They teach you this in school. Keep it moving.

Patti is the worst example. She does this and everyone just laughs and lauds her. "Oh it's just Patti." T-shirts are made. It's reprehensible behavior, especially because the actor doesn't have all the information. Didn't Patti berate the dude who was hired to take pictures.

She clearly set the tone for others to think this is acceptable.

Most performers tweet AFTER a show or point the person out to stage management when they are off stage. Bareilles does this.

I'm sorry but this falls on Lillias. There is too much going on pre-show for staff to alert the actors about the goings on in the house. Just stay in character and complete the scene.

A hearing device was letting out a high pitch squeal for a good five minutes during ITW. The actors didn't bat an eyelash. That's how it's done.

This is a really bad look for the show. I'd be willing to bet Lillias is out of the show tonight.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Though to bring up Patti is interesting. As someone on Twitter said, "when Patti does it, people applaud her". Now some people on Twitter are saying Lillias should be either fired or suspended. Lillias likely feels terrible and probably had no clue it was a CC device. I don't think the house manager (or ushers) should be responsible for alerting the stage manager that someone is using a CC device during the show. I don't believe Lillias has posted an apology anywhere, though I don't know of her socials to look(Twitter, IG).

Agreed, although that then goes back to “let FOH do our jobs.” I don’t work at the Kerr but there have been so many times where house management will say “the stage manager says Person sees someone potentially recording in seat xyz, can you go check on it?”

I don’t think she should be fired, but there needs to be better education and/or communication on this subject.

Ushers do absolutely nothing so I’m not surprised actors are getting fed up. When I was at The Piano Lesson a woman in the second row scrolled on her phone for the entirety of Act 2 and no one did a thing about it.

This, however, was a mistake and they should apologize.

Ushers do nothing…is definitely theatre dependent. I’ve been to several shows in recent months (other than the one that employs me) and I’ve literally seen ushers run down the aisles to stop people.

Years ago my husband and I, on vacation in Lancaster Pennsylvania, caught a cabaret act by a singer named Brandon Cutrell.  Halfway through the show my husband suffered an attack of his immune disorder.  Although he was in pain, he decided he needed to grit his teeth and stay through the end because he was afraid it would seem rude to walk out, as we were in the front row.  That was a mistake.

Suddenly Brandon Cutrell stopped the show and started yelling at my husband: “I can tell by the look on your face that you hated that song, and that means you hate gay marriage and you hate me!  You Republicans may be in the majority in Lancaster, but in this room we know how horrible you are!”

It was humiliating, although in retrospect it’s kind of funny.  Better we should have been deemed rude than Republican!  Honestly it takes a special kind of narcissism for a performer on stage to assume he knows what’s really going on in the audience.

A few weeks ago, I was at a showing of Goddess at Berkeley Rep. The woman next to me kept on looking at something bright, and I assumed it was a cell phone. I finally turned to her during Act II and said, "It's a little bright, isn't it?"

And that was when I found out it was not a cell phone, but an insulin monitor. I had just seen Moulin Rouge tour the night before, where the audience was awful (singing along loudly to the songs, doing full flash photography). I was ready to assume the worst, only to find out that there was in this case a legitimate reason. I apologized to the woman afterwards, and thankfully she was very gracious about it.

All of which is to say: I can understand how after seeing people recording from the front row night after night, actors are expecting the worst. That being said, the woman at Hadestown totally deserves an apology, and things should have been done differently.

Yeah I agree with what’s been said in terms of actors calling out audience members. It is self-centered and takes away from the show. For all the actor knows,  one else notices what’s happening—get on with it. You also never know what might be going on—as is sadly shown here.

Actors need to trust the house staff to do their jobs and stick to THEIR job. While White didn’t intend to do something as hurtful as happened here, she shouldn’t have said anything. And yes this applies to Patti LuPone too.

I feel for this young woman and hope White and the producers/theater make this right…and that any actor interrupting their own performance thinks twice before doing so in the future.

"...she shouldn’t have said anything...  any actor interrupting their own performance..."

That's not what happened. Please read the updated account from both a cast member and the audience member. This is still an important teachable moment but no need to continue to pass judgement on behavior that didn't happen.

I always sort of chuckle when “it’s a distraction!!” Is used as a reason to make a scene. Do I love the construction outside of my apartment when I’m trying to meet a deadline. No, but I move on and do my job. Some actors really need more perspective on the realities on distractions.

and some responses to the latest tweets are completely unhinged, once again proving theatre Twitter is one of the most dismal sectors of the internet.

It’s still not an actor’s job. If there’s recording or photos happening in the audience, it’s the house staff’s job. Let them take care of it.

Looks like the cast member, Emily Afton deleted her tweets. Can someone summarize what it was about?

I only skimmed the tweet from the cast member, but it basically said (across four or five paragraphs)…

”I’m in the show, I know Samantha, the word Yelled is being taken out of context, Hermes does this look-at-the-audience thing at the start of the show, Samantha was unfortunately sitting in that area, Lillias didn’t change any lines or break character in any way, we barely leave the stage during the show so there was no chance to alert stage management.”

I wish I could give a clearer summary, but from minute one I was confused by how she said “I know Samantha” and basically that Samantha was wrong. She kinda lost me there. Shrug.

It is not the responsibility, nor the right, of an actor to reprimand audience members for any kind of perceived misbehavior. Period. Even in a scenario where you feel unsafe, you find your nearest SM and you deal with it in the correct way. As the audience member noted, this did eventually happen and the HM communicated to the SM that the device was for captioning. This is all that should have happened. Now it’s a whole mess and the internet is having an absolute field day with the finger pointing and exaggerations.

I’m also not here for the excuse “we never leave the stage, we couldn’t alert an SM.” If you can break the fourth wall to speak directly to an audience member while something else is happening onstage, you can take the 2 seconds to step into the wings, find an SM, and let them know. Or wait until intermission.
