Ditto @Kad! Couldn't have said it better. Bravo to Lorne Michaels for choosing a Broadway star as Host!
Yes, Gypsy, they are all famous and popular. I didn't say they weren't. Just that they appeal to a younger crowd than most moms and aunts. Just like Margot Robbie and the show in general.

LMM is absolutely not "mainstream." Back when that phrase was used, it applied to 'middle American families.' Not long ago, this was also the most valuable audience/demographic in television; it has since changed. That said, I think it's a more than reasonable barometer to measuring one's profile or visibility to the general public. While I am positive much of Middle America knows of Hamilton, I am just as positive they have no clue who LMM is. It's not meant to be a slight or dig; it's simply being honest about one's fame.
I'm not sure why his level of fame even matters. Who watches SNL for the host?
Heck, who watches SNL?

Apparently many people do or else it would have been taken off the air already, no?
SNL's upcoming season premier is one of the most anticipated shows in quite awhile, so an awful lot of people still find it relevant.

In what way? How, pray tell, is this true? Any data?
SNL's relevancy in Presidential election years peaks. The fact that they timed their preview night this season right after first debate is not coincidental. In fact, their first 4 episodes are after a debate because of how the latter are spaced out.
SNL has been known to set the tone for how candidates are viewed by people who get their news from comedy shows (which is extraordinarily large). They are yet to get into the dark side of what a Trump candidacy means apart from a short skit as an ad by "Racists For Trump" last season. I don't have sources/data for how and why SNL is anticipated, but I think it's to say that is most certainly is.

For evidence on how SNL influences the way we view candidates just look up the origins of "I can see Russia from my house."
I can't wait to watch Lin and Twenty One Pilots!
agreed! i kept fearing he would flub a line but i think he got through the whole rap perfectly

This cast party video is my life
Crucible Cast Party is so accurate to how high school theater cast parties are it's scary
Crucible Cast Party + tons of Broadway commercials? Best SNL I've seen in years.
The monologue and the cast party were brilliant. I loved the teaching skit. Really a great satire of himself as a teacher
He's killing it! One of the best hosts in recent memory.
I dunno. I'm not really laughing that much...
I don't think it's necessarily solely his fault/performance. Moreso, the writing.
Maybe it's just me?
Uhh that final soldier sketch was just rough....0% funny and 60% offensive
I got into the dress rehearsal. He definitely has charisma and wasn't wooden at all. His personality rose above the weaker sketches. Not sure what changes were made to live show, yet. It was fun and a lot easier to get in than I thought.

This episode was overall meh . SNL hasnt been funny for YEARS so I wouldnt blame Lin for this, i think he was great with the material he was given. The cold opening was the best bit.

You just described every SNL episode for the last decade or so.
