I don’t agree with that at all. People are always singing the praises of Diane Paulus and Julie Taymor and debating the work of directors like Bart Sher, Michael Greif, Michael Mayer

I'm going to post every where I can on this topic to say that if we can cast anyone as Maria - we can start to remove the one allowed discriminatory practice in casting and remove height limits for kids for the casting of the CHILDREN.

Let's cast the best singers and actors PERIOD based on TALENT, not height and appearance. I am so sick of seeing talented kids excluded from calls becuse of their height (and sometimes weight). Beaches, looking at you.

Let's find the most talented Von Trapp kids in the world-period. That will truly be a vision I can get behind.

It's hard to know for sure (and those AI detectors for art are crap) but could be something like Adobe Fresco or Procreate, both which do not use AI.

It wouldn’t bother me at all if the Von Trapp kids were of different races. But if they ‘re all six feet tall, well, obviously, THAT would be a problem.

I think casting a woman of color in a show set around the rise of Nazism in late 30's Austria is kind of odd.

It is a weirder contrast when you notice that the August Wilson play is being done in the basement...I really expected Seven Guitars was going to be a Broadway production based on recent commitments to restaging Wilson on Broadway by the estate

I think it's more than kind of odd to suggest that casting for a classic of American musical theater should be open only to white people forever and ever.

I hear they’re looking for a 6 foot tall 300 lb Gretl.

the beauty of the Newhouse is something can always move upstairs (or down to midtown) if it’s really good and sells well. And given RSH’s track record with Wilson I think we can all expect it will be good at minimum, hopefully great.

It’s also not like Wilson is scarce on Broadway. 3 productions in 9 years, plus three feature films.

Odd because women of color didn’t exist during late 30’s Austria during the rise of Nazism…?

I think Maria being a convent girl without any mention of determinate birth or origin gives more credence that anyone could play her (and while she is based on a real person, the musical is obviously fictionalized with many factual details changed).

And, as I said in another thread, it's key to the plot that she doesn't fit in at the convent and is disliked by the Captain's Nazi-adjacent fiancé. A Black woman in the part could add more layers to those parts of the story.

I still haven’t recovered from when Lincoln Center cast Lauren Ambrose in My Fair Lady. Everyone knows she’s not an illiterate guttersnipe from London. It just made the whole thing so unrealistic.

The nerve! I will be writing a very strongly worded letter (to thank them for casting young, fresh, and exciting talent in major productions).

A Black Maria? What’s next, an Elphaba that can’t fly around on a broomstick?

So exciting! I've always wanted Lincoln Center to do a revival of this show, especially after South Pacific, The King and I, and My Fair Lady! I've actually never seen a show on Broadway, but this is definitely one I'd fly to NYC to experience.

I'm excited a Black actress will take on the role of Maria. Watching a Black actress play Nancy in the West End revival of Oliver! I saw last summer really brought layers to the character I hadn't noticed or thought about before.

What are people thinking in terms of what this production will look like/feel like? Comparing it to the 1994 Carousel, 2008 South Pacific and 2015 King & I. The Carousel came from London and had its own particular style/design; the SP and K&I had their own Bart Sher aesthetic, very traditional, very sumptuous and grand. Do you think this Sound of Music will follow suit, and follow the original book word for word, or will we see influence from the movie?

Just looked at the season announcement email and noticed that they have opened up membership again. I seem to remember that last year it wassn't open when they announced Ragtime. If you're too old for the other ticket iniatives, membership is a good option as it gives you priority access to very good orchestra seats at a reasonable price.

This is so exciting!! I think Jasmine Amy Rogers is going to be incredible. Personally, I don't find arguments about Black women having existed in 1930s Austria, or comparisons to Lauren Ambrose not actually being a Cockney "guttersnipe," super persuasive when it comes to defending this casting choice (though I know some of it is just sarcasm). Lauren Ambrose was performing/acting a social class and accent. Elphaba is costumed to be green and performs magic. Jasmine Amy Rogers won't be performing/acting white. To me, the honest thing is simply that we don't need Maria to be white in order for this story to work and want to see talented poc perform these parts (which have been around for AGES) even if legitimate arguments can be made around historical likelihood. Of course it's true that Black women "existed" in that time and place. But it's also true that, historically speaking, the odds of a Maria von Trapp figure in this setting being Black may have been low. I don't think acknowledging that is offensive or unreasonable because it doesn't invalidate the bigger reason for wanting to see someone like Jasmine Amy Rogers do this. Maria's whiteness isn't absolutely essential to the story being told, and performers like Jasmine Amy Rogers deserve opportunities to play these roles and sing this music too - especially in shows that have been revived again and again. These shows have been around for generations, and it's exciting to see new artists bring them to life in different ways.

On another note, I hope that this revival is lush and beautiful a la The King and I & My Fair Lady. Give me the hills!!

People on All that Chat are saying the membership is now tiered with different categories depending on whether you wish to see Broadway or off-Broadway shows or both.

If they're going to do The Sound of Music I expect them to throw all of the money at it! Give us all of the majestic vistas and lavish sets & costumes we could ask for!

As far as the book goes, if there were any substantial changes/revisions planned I suspect that would have been mentioned in the press release. But wasn't there a suggestion that some tinkering was being done for the new tour?

My whole post was sarcastic.

This was my point. Pointing out that all these characters are played by actors, and to have an issue with this casting is absurd. Jasmine is very skilled and will perform the role beautifully.

I cannot wait to see Jasmine in this. I do just hope it’s a big lavish production, and that they announce Patrick Wilson in the coming months!

I don't know? My membership was up for renewal this month & I just did it this morning, and I had only one option for $55+change

First...thanks for the heads up on the membership opening, y'all!

I bought one for me and one for my husband at the Tier 3 level which gets you access to both the Broadway and Off-Broadway shows.
