In what way did he upset Sylvester Stallone?
Rylance is a three-time Tony winner.
the two got into a fistfight afterward
Mark rylance character did basically nothing, but walk across a bridge!!! The academy awards are so fuzzed up.
Well it's a good thing Steven Spielberg rescued him from the theatre!

Stallone was expected to win this award. My mistake thought he only had two Tonys but see he has three.
So happy - cheered out loud. And I see NICE FISH in 2 weeks, what could be more perfect. So happy for Mr Rylance, he is an amazingly gifted actor

Happy for Rylance, but can't help feel disappointed for Stallone. It would've been nice for them to honor him for Rocky after all these years, as he's had a great legacy. Mark Rylance winning another award is just a little like enough already. No hard feelings though, the man gave an excellent performance in Bridge of Spies.

In Bridge Of Spies he gave a master class in underacting.
Did he win an Emmy for Wolf Hall this year? I can't remember. If he did, he's only a Grammy away from an EGOT.

No, he was nominated for the Emmy. Richard Jenkins won for "Oliver Kitteridge".
I believe he was nominated for the Emmy but didn't win.
Im very happy for Rylance, but mostly because I just love him as an actor and I think he deserves his Oscar-winning status. I don't necessarily think he gave the best performance of those 5 men though. Still, like I said, I'm very happy for him.

Stallone was expected to win this award by whom? His publicist?
I saw both performances and knew it was Rylance.

That's actually ridiculous.
I was disappointed to not get a Louis Jenkins poem as the acceptance speech.

Everyone. Do a quick news search and every headline basically says the same thing: Stallone loses to Rylance. He was the favorite to win.

Stallone was the pick of many Oscar polls to win his category, including USA Today and Entertainment Weekly. He won the Golden Globes, but Rylance won the BAFTAs (Idris Alba who won the Screen Actors Guild was not nominated for an Oscar). Although the BAFTAs (England equivalent to the Oscars) usually picked winners from their pond.
i was hoping for a Stallone win!

My father, who admittedly doesn't see a whole lot of movies, and had certainly never seen Rylance in anything, said to me one day: "Have you seen that spy movie?"
Me: "The one with Mark Rylance?"
Him "Yes! I had no idea how incredible of an actor he is. I've never really noticed before the difference between being a movie star and being a great actor...there was nobody in that movie doing what he was doing, it was wonderful."
Really thrilled to hear he won tonight. As much as I wanted it to happen, I didn't think it would be his year.
I am so happy he won! It was the one category I was truly rooting for. =) Congrats Mr Rylance!
@willep: I just remembered I had an almost identical conversation with my own father after seeing the movie. He said "you can really tell that actor knows what he is doing"
It really was a very good performance, just not as showy and bait-y as most Oscar-winning performances
The beauty is: he hasn't even begun to touch his screen career yet. I'm sure it'll just keep going and going from here on out on screen. But it's wonderful for the rest of world to start seeing what a brilliant actor he is.

Except fewer and fewer movies are being made that are not comic books.
