The Producers. After all Mel Brooks' hype at the Tony's, I just didn't get it. By the time I saw it Matthew and Nathan had left. I really didn't enjoy it at all.
Same goes for Lion King and I saw it shortly after it opened.
Performer: without a doubt, Idina Menzel
Hey Dottie!
Did your colleagues enjoy the cake even though your cat decided to sit on it? ~GuyfromGermany
For me it was definitely Mamma Mia (though my parents loved it) and The Lion King.

Still a little bit of you laced with my doubt. Still a little hard to say what's going on..." Damien Rice
Shows: The Producers (I suppose there wasn't very heavy competition that year and that's why it won 12 Tonys.) Cats Wicked Mamma Mia Beauty and the Beast (I could save $100 and watch the movie) Movin' Out (as much as I like Billy Joel, I wanted to pull my hair out watching it)
Perfomers: Adam Pascal Bernadette Peters (don't throw things at me)
A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.
lol. I almost freaked out. I was gonna rip you a new one after I saw two of the best talent in all of Bway were on your list (Sutton and Heather). Lucky for both of us, you're a kidder. =)
Ya know...I really don't get all the discontent for Idina Menzel. She's spectacular. She gets a little credit for a role that may or may not be all that good...and everyone goes apes**t and decides it's time to hate her for it. It's funny how something does well...when one person doesn't appreciate it that automatically means it got TOO MUCH appreciation from everyone else. Get off your high horses and realize that there are far worse things in the world than Idina Menzel and Wicked. In my humble opinion, I'd say some of the classics are the ones that are over-rated, i.e. Carousel, South Pacific, etc etc. and over-rated people...Rodgers and Hammerstein. Seems like their stuff is only good for two things...High school and community theatre.
Ok, I'm done ranting now.

Lizzy-I have never known Adam to be anything but great with his fans. I've heard **** like this before about him but I don't see how it could be true. I have only ever had great experiences with him. There is nothing wrong with a perfomer not coming out after matinee performances if they have another show to do at night. Sure, we would love to see him but if he needs to rest betweenn shows than that's what he should do! And even if he does slip out another door, who cares?? It's his decision, stage dooring is not a part of his job description.
What kind of theatre enthusiast are you to be judging an actor on his stage door experiences rather than his performance? I don't care if you don't like him as an ACTOR but talk about that as this is what the thread and board are for.
Overrated actors: Kerry Butler Daphne Rubin-Vega Idina Menzel Sutton Foster Patty LuPone Adam Pascal... little bit. He's a fine performer, I just don't get the feeling that I have to obsess over him.
Kerry Butler ~People say she is a phenomenal actress, but IMO she plays the same character in every show she does. I also find her voice to be extremely irritating. Barbra Steisand ~I just don't get the hype about her. I respect her talent and her success, but I've never enjoyed her voice at all. Adam Pascal ~I love his voice, but he really isn't that good of an actor. I don't understand why everyone thinks he is so amazing. Daphne Rubin-Vega ~I can't stand her voice. So there.
Hairspray ~I love the music but was unimpressed with the show. I will never understand what all the hype was/is about. Mamma Mia! ~It's entertaining yes, but I think it is one of the most poorly written shows I've ever seen. The merging of the story and the songs makes no sense half of the time. The Lion King ~I hate the music and find the show to be overblown and painful to watch. Beauty and the Beast ~I wanted to rip my hair out watching this, I really did. Luckily I fell asleep so I didn't have to experience the full pain of it.
NYCbabe, I have heard that Adam isn't a great actor and I believe it, but having never seen him I can say that I like him because of his voice. If I'd seen him perform, his bad acting may have changed my mind, but I haven't ever seen him act. All I know is that he sounds great on Rent and Aida, so that's my reason.
(sorry if that was badly phrased, I kinda zoned out a bit.)
producers: It was a good show and I enjoyed it...but i think it got more than it deserved. rent: I liked it but it wasn't a life changing experience for me or anything, which I would expect it to be with some of the hype it gets.
Point taken, insomniak. I adore his voice on the RENT and Aida CDs, and by no means do I think his singing is overrated. Having seen him perform however, I think he is overrated as an actor, that's all.
EponineThenardier - that was an AWESOME synopsis! i have seen the show 3 times, been in a highschool production of it, and have been offered the role of eponine's understudy on a tour of it, but i couldnt help continuing to read because of all your wonderful little comments I hope you persuaded some people to buy tickets to it!
okay now for my overrated shows. wicked-yes i enjoy the cast recording, never seen it live but it is way overrated in my opinion actor-kristen chenoweth-sorry but her voice really annoys me. its all nasal and squeeky and it sounds like she was sucking hellium before recording the cd. adam pascal-yes i think he was very good but he is not passionate about broadway at all-it just keeps food on the table for him, he didnt even know the freaking stage directions when he auditioned for RENT, and had been in nothing before RENT. i dont know i just think he is overrated as an actor and if he has his heart set on being a rock star, then he needs to get his butt off broadway (i cant believe im saying that) and make it happen oh yea and i sorta think Q is overrated. i mean its an okay show, i dont prefer it myself but i just dont inderstand how puppets singing about how the internet is for porn can win so many awards. i dont have any idea as to who should have gotten the awards instead, and i respect Q's accomplishments, i just dont particularly agree with it.
o yea and no one else is sticking up for rent so i feel it is my duty to do so: 1st of all, i understand everyone has their own opinions and stuff but i really love the show-larson was taking a big step by putting some of the more 'risky' topics/situations in his show and by writing a rock opera. im not asking you to like it, but i think it deserves all the respect it got (oh yea i forgot to mention that im only talking about the OBC cuz once they left, they took the heart of the show with it and now its rather bad)so yea i can see how some people may see it as overrated, but i think the fame wicked and q are getting is far more than rent has had in a long time... yeah i agree. good point insomniak. i saw him three times in AIDA and his acting has improved a great deal. he still isn't the best though. his voice makes me melt!
