There are a lot on my list:
Mamma Mia-Absolutely hate it
Avenue Q-I love it, but yeah, it's overrated
Wicked-Same as Avenue Q
Cats-I loathe it. One of my friends told me it was a work of genius and I gagged.
JCS-I don't really like it much.
All Disney shows are overrated. I LOATHE The Lion King and I don't really like Beauty and the Beast. Aida isn't bad, but it's not great.

CATS! I just can't think about all the success it's had compared with better shows, without foaming at the mouth.
I
JUST
DON'T
GET
IT

Posted: 8/25/04 at 7:53pmme neither. That is one of the only ALW shows I can't stand. The other being the Patti Lupone version of EVITA. I know, boo and hiss. It Mandy Pastinkin wasn't on it, I would probably like it better. BLAH!!

Krisitn Chenoweth is stunning when she sings in her really high soprano (I believe it's called a coloratura?) but any other time she's annoying and sounds like a ten year old. And her acting really isn't anything special.
Jonathan Larson took a big risk in writing Rent, I agree with NoDayButToday that he deserves props for that.
NoDay, Adam did try the rocker thing, he failed so he went back to broadway...
CATS is awful. I was waiting for it to end. Why is it such a legend? Why?! There is nothing special about the "story", music or anything. (The only exception is Memory, that is a great song.)

Posted: 8/25/04 at 8:05pmWicked is just overrated in general. The show is good, not great. And all the overrating is making people hate it. Idina is not God, I'm sick of people acting like it sometimes, but I do like her a lot.

Posted: 8/25/04 at 8:05pmOh no, she is not a god. ANTHONY WARLOW IS THOUGH. VOCAL GOD. But, I still love her voice

I definitely agree you with you on Anthony Warlow, spider. Vocal God, definitely
(Now, if I can get Adam Pascal and Anthony Warlow to do a duet a la Granada in THE MAIN EVENT, that would be cool. =))

That's a lot of IFs! At least I'm a straight woman, and I'm (at the moment) closer to Australia -- so I'm a li'l bit ahead...

Eponine- My compliments! After a low - sey day this gave me a much needed howl of laughter, even more if u realize how accurate it is (esp w the running commentary!!)
#115re: Most Overrated Musical (and Actors) of All Time
Posted: 8/25/04 at 8:42pmHairspray and the Lion King. I really wasn't crazy about them; I was actually pretty disappointed after all the hype that they got.

Spidey - How can you say Idina is being overrated in Wicked when you haven't even seen her? Even I think she isn't good on the CD, but she is stunning live.
Anyway...overrated actors:
Adam Pascal - He just can't act. He has a great, unique voice, but he cracks too much for me to think highly of his singing.
Kerry Butler - Her acting always seems forcec to me and I'm not a fan of her voice.
Barbra Streisand - Whenever I listen to her sing...I feel like she's giving nothing; it's as if she's completely emotionally detached...I don't hear emotion, and for some reason it grates on my nerves.
Shows?...Rent. I love it, but PLEASE.
South Pacific - Ok, but nothing wonderful
Mamma Mia...I get a headache just thinking about it.
At the moment, Wicked is highly overrated, but I have a feeling it's just the show of the moment, and it'll fade away as time goes on.

I never saw the obsession with 42nd Street or Thoroughly Modern Millie. I could not stand either!!
I don't understand all the JCS hating-- that was one of the best shows!!
As for actresses, I think Bernadette Peters is WAY overrated. I've seen her perform, but I just don't see all the hype.

Okay, Eponine, you win. I'm going to buy tickets to Les Mis, at the very least in your honor since you went through all that trouble to write a very long (and very amusing) synopsis for me. I'll keep you posted.
Do people tend to appreciate Adam Pascal's acting?? I consider myself a HUGE Adam fan, but it's about 90% because of his voice
(5% for his looks and 5% for being cool enough to be an a$$hole to Jack Black in School of Rock).
Kristin Cheno - Overrated. I've never heard her do opera, but after Wicked and YAGMCB, she sounds like Minnie Mouse on helium. She's perfect for Galinda, but not really much else.
I'd argue the same for Anthony Rapp and Daphne Rubin-Vega in Rent, but aside from that and RHS, I haven't seen aything else to compare her to.
This isn't a musical, but am I the only one who hated Vagina Monologues?
"Good luck returning my ass!" - Wilhemina Slater
"This is my breakfast, lunch and f***ing dinner right here. I'm not even f***in' joking." - Colin Farrell

Posted: 8/26/04 at 8:12pmI would say the most overrated was Urinetown, You're A Good Man Charlie Brown, I can't stand when grown ups try to play kids. It was the most expensive nap I took!
