What Musical did were you extremely suprised upon watching? Maybe you expected one thing and it turned out to be something totally different. Could be good or bad.
Mine was Lion King. I never expected to be so engaged by a story that i have seen and heard about so many times. It was truly one of the best theatre going experiences ever.
All Shook Up..I went in thinking "Oh god, Elvis" and then came out humming all the songs and loved it! I saw Spamalot the day before and found ASU to be more entertaining, IMO.
And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps...
What did she realize, Kitten?
That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs.
What's wrong with that?
Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had...
Where?
On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.
Whistle Down The Wind- got totally swept away with the story. At the end most of the audience was having panic attacks because you were so involved. One of the best shows i've ever seen and Glen Campbell was phenomonal as "the man".
Jesus Loves You... Everybody else thinks you're an idiot!
I have to third or fourth or whatever we're at now All Shook Up. I liked it so much when I saw it I took my students back to see it a couple of months later.
The most recent would have to be Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I bought a ticket with reluctance and only because I got a discount. I ended up enjoying it. It's not great, but I certainly found it entertaining enough.
All Shook Up, I went in ready for an okay show and I ended up having a great time and left the theater so happy!! Then there's Wicked, I bought the OBCR expecting this amazing "omg theater will be changed forever" and got...not that. Jason, I'm going back to ASU soon too!!
I saw Wicked and The Boy From Oz in the same day expecting to be wowed by Wicked and mildly amused by BFO. I was actually WOWED by BFO and mildly amused by Wicked...funny, that. Wicked is a storybook musical with neat special effects and a few good tunes. BFO was a powerhouse performance by an unbelievable performer with two incredible supporting actresses, great dance numbers, endearing tunes and lots of heart.
Another surprise was Sideshow - had no idea what it was going into it, came out teary-eyed and moved and with two new favorite divas - Emily and Alice.
Yes - how could I forget Side Show -- I was SO not expecting that to be as good as it was.
I have to go on the "better than I thought" side with Wicked. I do think there are clunkers in the score, but the good stuff, and the clever book, to me more than make up for it.
I was surprised how much I liked Sweet Charity too - didn't LOVE it, but it was an enjoyable night.
I do have to stick with ASU as my all time biggest surprise. I really went in thinking I was going to hate it -- I didn't like Fosse, I didn't like Smokey Joe's, I didn't like Contact -- I didn't think Mamma Mia was so great other than a few good songs, I'd heard terrible things about Good Vibrations -- and then, with the exception of a couple of songs which they tried to fix from preview to opening night, the songs sounded like they could have come right out of the very funny book. When I first saw it at previews, Jailhouse Rock and Blue Suede Shoes were literally just STUCK in there - no context at all. Once the show opened, it sounded like they at least TRIED to put some context in -- and I think they even reassigned Blue Suede Shoes so it made more sense than it did before.
I still don't get the angels on motorcycles though...
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I originally bought a ticket to see Raul and Marc Kudisch. I thought that it wasn't going to be anything special, but I actually ended up enjoying the show a whole lot. Sure it's not the best show ever, but it was a lot of fun. Updated On: 6/12/05 at 06:30 PM
Wicked. I saw the Tonys performance and wasn't impressed, and I thought the concept sounded kinda cheesy. I was shocked when I feel head over heels in love with it after finally seeing it.
I was really surprised by Hairspray. I didn't know much about the story before seeing the show, and went in thinking, "Okay... a story about a fat girl and her mother... at least we got good seats," and by the end of the show, I was a huge fan.
Phantom! I went in expecting, spectacle poppy theatre with no depth. I got a story, w/ yes some poppy music, but wiht a beautiful message.
Rosencrantz: "Be happy - if you're not even HAPPY what's so good about surviving? We'll be all right. I suppose we just go on."
- from Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
Little Women has strong female roles in a meaty score that I really like. I was pleased as punch ("pleased as punch!!??" Christopher Columbas!) with the catchy and powerful score and the LOVELY set.
Seussical isn't the whimpy little kids' show I used to think it was.

Wicked- i thought it would be a cutesy stupid show but was pleasantly surprised
"No two shows are alike in the making. Each show is a living
piece of your life in a small unreal world with its own character
and integrity; its own new set of memorable experiences and
incredible happenings. You begin to love and adapt to its strangeness.
Dreams harden into substance. Values come into focus. You wish
it would never end. The dream world vanishes like mist before a
rising sun; part of you vanishes with it. And back you land in the
real world with a thud- fogged, uneasy, jittery, difficult to get
along with. There is only one cure. A new show. A new, small
unreal world; new visions, experiences, incredible happenings.
Again you love it, adapt to it, wish it would never end.
But end it does. Another part of you vanishes.
That's show business."-Anonymous
Into the Woods. I went in expecting a blah show and left enthralled and deeply moved.
Millie. Let me first say I loved this show and it remains one of my favorites to this day but I still expected a little bit more from it what with all the Tonys and awards pouring in.
Avenue Q, because I went into it thinking that it would be a funny little naughty puppet show, but I was blow away by the amount of talent and heart in it. A good surprise. Elyse. No day but today.
