The film is out on Netflix on December 11, 2020. Never once was it given any other date. It will be released in select movie theatres on December 4, 2020 to cover the awards season protocol for consideration as a theatrical feature film. Same thing was done for the Netflix films A MARRIAGE STORY and ROMA, which both won Academy Awards/Oscars and were available on Netflix and select movie theatres.

James Corden is doing an American accent and um""
Whoa nelly it is awful. Really makes me miss Brooks' version. So much more sincerity and heart, too.

Just from this little snippet I can't imagine anyone who is a fan of this show not being excited. The voices and orchestrations sound great, and there is a ton of energy. Can't wait until December 11th.
Hopefully it will come off better while watching the movie. I am not crazy about some of the casting but, of course, I will watch it. It was my favorite musical that season.
I like the stage version of this song better, but I do like the orchestrations. Kerry Washington brings down the energy when speaking, but love her singing voice. The ensemble/chorus sounds autotuned and or canned, but overall, its a fun recording. Totally what I would expect to sound like for a movie/tv version. Look forward to the entire album.
While I was hoping for rewrites of the songs (some of the most cringe lyrics I’ve heard on Broadway), the production of the track nearly makes up for it. At least it’ll sound good.
Wow, "Tonight Belongs to You" sounds great. Jo Ellen Perlman sounds like she's going to be excellent. Also, pleasantly surprised by Kerry Washington. I'm so intrigued to see her and Ariana DeBose. Can't wait to enjoy this during the holidays!
Well, everyone sounds great to me!!! Jo Ellen Perlman sounds very close to Caitlin Kinnunen, and while I am super super thrilled for Perlman, I just feel so awful for Caitilin as well. It makes me wonder what the point was to replacing an unknown (who happened to be with the show from day 1 and got a surprise Tony nomination) with an unknown, you know?

Sorry for the late delay, folks. Just heard the film and B'way versions of "Tonight Belongs to You" back-to-back and here are my initial thoughts:
The orchestrations in the film version are straight FIRE. Love the added finger-snaps in the Barry/Emma verses, added strings, and heavier drums. I much prefer this instrumentation than B'way. GO BIG!
Kinnunen's "I think I'll pass" is better-delivered than Pellman's.
"You be Elphie, I'm Galinda!": Yes, this concludes a slant rhyme, but I have a soft spot for this line. When I observed Ted Arthur play Key 2 for a performance, Meg waved to the two of us and I saw it on the monitor. Apparently she always did this on B'way to whoever was playing Key 2, but it felt really special that day. Her smile is really infectious.
Did anyone hear the added ladies' lower harmony on "life's no dress rehearsal" before Kerry's verse? The ladies sang this all in unison on the OBCR.
Jo Ellen Pellman: No matter how this movie is received, I hope Pellman gets good reviews for this and that it leads to bigger and better roles. I loved Kinnunen in this role but I can't wait to see this newbie give it a whirl. She's off to a good start.
James Corden: Ho boy. This has "mismatched" written all over it. His singing is okay, but he sounds so weird with an American accent and it makes me miss Brooks Ashmanskas a lot. At least the latter sang this like he meant it. I'm sure there were better fits for Barry in this adaptation. Prove me wrong this December, Corden, pretty please...
Logan Riley Hassel and Sofia Deler: Okay, I guess? We have to wait until the movie to really see the scope of their Kaylee and Shelby. Hassel's voice sounds good, though.
Kerry Washington and Ariana DeBose: Okay, I wasn't expecting THAT from Washington. My god, that VOICE blows Courtenay Collins out of the water! Her acting is pretty low-energy though (as is DeBose's). Let's check back on these two again in a month, as well as Hassel and Deler.
The end of the song was better on B'way, including the dance break and final chorus. The film's short dance break lets me down a bit. It also cuts out after the final "belongs...". Though it was an awkward transition at first, I would say this immediately transitions to the scene where Barry walks Emma into the gym for the "fake prom." Of course, this assumes not much has changed from B'way to screen version.
This Prom is off to a good-not-great start, IMO. I will probably still be both excited and anxious to see what Ryan Murphy did with this come December 11th.

I think the "low energy" is the difference between what makes a movie and what makes a musical. Musicals have to play to the back row, while movies are more intimate and more real. I think the context in this scene in particular adds to the real drama of the moment. It will probably make more sense when combined with the visuals and the rest of the movie, but I can see why people say it's low energy especially compared to the rest of the song (and the OBCR).

Maybe the idea was to gift an unknown with the same success than Caitlin got. She got great reviews, the chance to lead a Broadway musical, a fan base and a Tony Nomination from the show... no one can ever take that away from her so why not let someone else have that sort of success with the movie?
I was completely blown away by Kerry Washington’s voice.
I know she had done some early workshops of IN THE HEIGHTS, but I was still shocked. Shame that’s all she really sings.

Agreed. I'm interested to hear Nicole Kidman sing though. I haven't seen Moulin Rouge in so long, but as far as I can remember she didn't sing much.. or at all? Maybe I'm wrong. Curious to hear her voice.

She sung a LOT in Moulin Rouge. She had a solo, two huge duets and various parts in group numbers.
She also sung the opening song to her new HBO show THE UNDOING which is streaming now.
