He never directly said that, though. He said he didn't want to, that he was too old, and many things to indicate he wasn't interested... but he always stopped short of saying it wouldn't happen. Trust me, I listened very closely for him to flat out say he wouldn't do it, and he never crossed that line.
As for the producer saying JCM will extend or they will get a new Hedwig, well, sure, they may have feelers out to some people, but whether any will materialize in time? Who knows? With JCM only in for 7 weeks, though, they can't take too long to say something.
I just checked and they announced MCH as the new Hedwig 5 weeks before he was scheduled to start, which means the next Hedwig should be announced within 2 weeks, or the closing. With advance ticket sales and all, they can't put it off for too long...

So JCM extended until April 26, with news of a new Hedwig soon. MCH extended and 10 days later they announced JCM. Anyone have any clues to his replacement, I am assuming an announcement should be coming within the next 2 weeks.

Alan Cumming would be my dream Hedwig replacement post JCM. He is available so you never know if it could happen :).
Stephen Trask gave an interview recently where he mentioned working with the new Hedwig in a few weeks, so presumably they've got someone lined up.
Mentioned right here
^^ And that interview was done the day before John started, so the new Hedwig has probably already started rehearsals....
Does the replacement really need more than two months to rehearse? Serious question.
JCM rehearsed for almost that long and he wasn't starting from scratch. I'm sure it's not a full time thing over the course of two months. And you also have to memorize an essentially 2 hour long monologue.
Of course you have support from the band and Yitzhak, but the person playing Hedwig is carrying the entire show. The physical, mental, vocal, and emotional strains are extremely intense. It takes a lot of prep.

Is it possible that whomever was lined up to replace JCM fell through, which would account for his six-week extension in the role?
Not to mention the person taking over might have additional commitments ala NPH, so they might be rehearsing in a piecemeal style at the moment.

How about Glenn Howerton from Always Sunny. I think he would be incredible in the role.
I maintain that Cheyenne Jackson would make a delicious Hedwig. Hardly "some slip of a girly boy" but he'd sing the hell out of that score (and look fantastic in the climax).

Cheyenne would be fantastic to hear sing this. And I imagine he'd look similar (as far as the slip/girly boy aspect) to MCH.

There have been quite a few Hedwigs (Michael Cerveris, Donovan Leitch, Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall) who are considerably more built-up/full of frame than the "slip of a girly boy" line would suggest.
Michael Cerveris's physique most closely matched JCM's of all the Hedwigs. In fact, none of them I've seen could be considered a beefy muscle man. I didn't see Andrew nor MCH.
Hasn't Cheyenne bulked up considerably over the last couple of years? I though he was Mr. Protein Powder and Lifting now.

I know it's sort of similar to what he's doing right now, but I think Alan Cumming would be great in the role.

I agree. There is also clips of him on YouTube singing Hedwig. He'd be my only reason to see Hedwig, as this show isn't really for me but Alan is one of my favorite actors and I honestly think that he could do anything!!!
If JCM isn't too old for Hedwig, get RuPaul in there!
the reason why Cabaret is closing was because Alan Cumming didn't want to extend. That would be crazy if he went from being the star of HIS show to the 4th replacement hedwig. He'd probably be great though. I would love to see Constantine or Adam Pascal do the role
In my mind, it would be almost physically impossible, or at least improbable for Alan Cumming, age 50, to go from the grueling schedule of Cabaret, in which he is one of many other actors, to the ridiculously grueling schedule of Hedwig, in which he'd be doing a one man show. breathe, lol.

I totally agree. He should take a little break for a little while, and then come back with something COMPLETELY different ala his one man Macbeth that will impress us all. I wonder if he will go through with Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Cabaret is closing because the rights for the production are being pulled just fyi.
