It was announced weeks ago. It's Bye Bye Birdie.
The real question is... when and what is FOX's next musical?
The one coming next year is Bye Bye Birdie come December 2017.
There was a Birdie promo on the telecast tonight.

But will FOX continue to do live musicals? Pretty strange that they decided to skip it for this coming January.
Well it took FOX two years to get Grease Live off the ground.

The time feels right for West Side Story Live. I just think it would dazzle on TV and it's one f those classics that people will tune in for.
As for Fox I assumed their Dirty Dancing remake had a musical element. If Rocky Horror was their standard I'd be happy never to see them produce another musical, these expections of course weren't live, Grease was phenomenal...

Why is it "pretty strange?" Grease was their first, it took them nearly two years to produce.
The did Rocky Horror a few months back and have the upcoming Dirty Dancing. Not live, but still musicals.
Don't make this political.

I believe it's ABC producing DIRTY DANCING, not FOX, but I could be wrong.

I wasn't referencing the election. I said January because GREASE LIVE was in early January, and they seemingly decided not to do one this coming January.
I mean if they West Side Story, it will be pretty political. Let's just hope they can get Tommy Kail to direct, because not gonna lie - Hairspray was a talented cast with really messy camerawork . Can we petition for Karen Olivo as Anita?
WSS would have be done by Fox. There is no way that NBC would produce something like WSS for their biggest event of the holiday season.
ABC TV is responsible for DIRTY DANCING with Abigail Breslin and Debra Messing. It's slated to air Summer 2017.

Oh yeah, they're going to scrap a production with a huge name that they're already promoting a year in advance.

pretty sure the guy that did the camera work for Hairspray is the same one that did it for Grease (Kail directed the scenes dramatically).

I actually wouldn't mind that. But I could see them doing Sunset Blvd before doing Starlight Express.

I think Bye Bye Birdie is such a mistake. Not only is it a show that doesn't offer, (save for J-Lo) many opportunities for POC to be portrayed due to the time period, it just doesn't hit. I think it's kinda more unknown to the public than people think, and if it is known it's eyerolly as a "Oh god I think that middle school down the street did that a few years ago". As well as after Grease and Hairspray haven't we had enough musicals about high schools from the 50s/60s?? It's just gonna look like both of those!
Why not consider something like Seussical? Where they could be super inventive with the set and cast anybody?
Ive had the exact OPPOSITE reaction to Birdie. The last time we did it, people were LOVING getting to see it. So much excitement.
Hopefully, they will simply color blind cast the show.
These types of shows work well because of the family audience they tend to bring in,
