Maya Rudolph for the win.
Suffered through this show twice with Cole and didn’t laugh once. (Went back because I thought I must be missing something. I wasn’t)
This is not Medea. Or even Madea. But Rudolph made it a crazy, genius Romp. I was giggling constantly through the show. And her audition segment was side-splitting.
Kudos to the rest of the cast too, especially Cheyenne Jackson.
Wish I had seen Jinkx But Maya salvaged it for me.
P.S. - I have to admit that Cole’s Cabaret act was sporadically funny. OK so I did laugh once.

A friend last night saw the production in London and it was almost ruined for them because he said that the entire cast shouted so loudly it was almost impossible understand the dialogue.
I have been followed from afar information about this show but I have never read anything about 'shouting'.
Can someone provide thoughts, please?

It depends on the actors, but yes, the show can get "shouty" because of the energy.

Why would they announce it before Meg even starts? They want to sell tickets for Meg, so announcing her replacement prior to her starting could hinder people from buying tickets.
Maya started April 28 and Meg was announced May 13. If Meg was leaving tomorrow, then it would make sense to be confused that they haven't announced her replacement. But they have no reason to announce before she has even started.

Someone on the UK board is saying it will be the original Broadway cast during the first two weeks of Cole's run and that it will be filmed on a few days not for sale to the public. Take it all with the usual grain of salt.

Is the new Mary merch typically available at the theater on that performer’s first night? I’ll be there tonight and was hoping to grab a Meg t-shirt in person, but the merch site says it doesn’t ship until 7/14.

I've been to a few Mary's first nights and each time they've always had the new administration's merch for sale. I would expect them to have Meg shirts, but its always a possibility they will not.

While there were a couple first night flubs, Oh, Mary! is in excellent hands with the Stalter administration.
Barrett Foa is a great Booth, really relishing his f*ggier tendencies in the bar scene, and looks painted into those pants. Ryo Kamibayashi slipped into the role of Simon seamlessly and seemed like he’s been playing the part as long as Tony Macht. Phillip James Brannon and Bianca Leigh even seemed on their A game.
And then there’s Meg Stalter. I already sort of knew in my head how she’d play the role, but I’m honestly most impressed by how understated she was. This isn’t to say she isn’t hitting the over-the-top heights, but I appreciated how she scaled the manic energy back to more of where Cole and Betty landed in the part so that - when she does fly off the handle - the crazy lands harder. Sometimes, the lines are just funnier when they’re throwaways, and (at least tonight) this was the first time in a while when I felt the through-line of Mary as someone so bored, she wanted to blow it all up. Her Mary is giving us the actual brat summer we deserve. I can only imagine her getting better and more confident in the role over time.

News from the West End production:
Catherine Tate has departed the show immediately, two weeks before the end of her scheduled run, due to "personal reasons." Mason Alexander Park has returned to the production until Cole begins their run on July 20.

Meg received her first Emmy nomination for Hacks today. Making your Broadway debut and getting nominated for an Emmy in the same week is not too shabby!

Didn't think Mason was available. Was wondering if Cole would fly over and take over the role for a few weeks.

A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. Catherine Tate has had a spotty attendance record in the London production, averaging three or four shows a week. The production noted it was due to a knee injury, but did not indicate whether it was pre-existing or sustained during the run of the show. For the last couple of weeks, her understudy has been on constantly, so I think it was a smart move to bring in a replacement that was worthy of people not exchanging tickets.

I forgot until just now, I did notice she was wearing what looked like knee pads (or brace?) under her lights when I saw it in May. I kind of assumed they were knee pads and assumed other Mary's opted for them as well.

As far as I understand, she hadn’t missed a show at all until the knee injury happened at the beginning of June (I believe during a performance, though I’m not certain) and she missed a few performances then and came back with modified staging, before beginning to miss more and more performances.
I saw the show a couple weeks after her injury and was notified a few hours before the performance that her understudy would be on, but to my surprise, it was in fact her who burst through those doors in that opening scene. Truly iconic moment, and she brought such a wildly new take on the role that didn’t just let me see the character in a new light, but the entire play. It seems she really did want to do the show, but an injury is an injury. Hope she recovers well.

This makes me believe the West End proshot is happening with the OBC. Bianca being in the current Broadway company was my one hang-up with that rumor.

I'd assume she'll still cover Mary? And that Jackie Sanders is returning as a standby? Sanders left on July 6 once Hannah returned from doing Hairspray.

The other big hang up is that Conrad Ricamora will likely be in tech for DISRUPTION at Signature, which opens July 22 in previews. The only way that will work is if he gets a preview or two off to fly out and do it over a weekend

Jackie is a vacation swing, so it makes sense that they would offer it to a full time understudy first. Hannah is also more familiar with the role than Jackie, so it makes sense to put her forward.
