Im seeing this next week so wont comment too much. However just because someone is wearing A&F doesnt make them rich - with the whole updating thing plenty of broke people these days still buy expensive stuff - its called credit. What it does do is take it away from the whole struggling artist thing - but then ive never found that theme to be strong in RENT anyway. Its more about relationships, and life.
Sadly when Oliver Thornton was cast my heart sank, having seen him in Phantom and Les Miz he just doesnt have the voice - and yes he is camp whatever he is in.
Problem is Rentheads are the same as Wickedheads etc (very passionate about their show), and the majority will be going in expecting to hate it so cant review it as a new piece. Ive heard some people who havent seen it before say its enjoyable but ive yet to really hear any raves.
I still applaud them for trying to update this, people do it with Shakespeare all the time, its rare that a musical can be done, RENT is one show that could work being modernised, although sadly it seems them seem to have missed it here.
Yes, all actors where stage make-up which is meant to emphasize features and prevent washout. In that one pictures it looks (to me) like he is wearing blue eyeshadow and red lipstick, as well as an overdose of self tanner. I honestly thought it was Angel.
That's Denise Van Outen, host of "You're the One That I Want" as Maureen...well, she helped give us the Grease revival here on Bway.
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
In saw Denise Van Outen when she was in the London Chicago and she was quite good, but in this pic she looks OLD for Maureen ! And Mark looks GORGEOUS !!!!
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.....
Please tell me that this is a misunderstanding and those are rehearsal pics or SOMETHING! NO NO NO NO NO.
ugh. way to destroy RENT. Why did they even feel the need to touch it in the first place? If it ain't broke...
"It means nothing to come and sit in a theater night after night and immerse yourself in fantasy, only then to walk out the door and be unchanged in reality. This show will live on in our hearts. But where it truly must survive is in our actions, our compassion and our generousity of spirit towards one another." - Adam Pascal on the closing of RENT
I feel bad for previous Marks. Saying that that guy is "too pretty" to play Mark is just insane. Since when do you have to be ugly as sin to play the character? They're obviously going for a younger, more youthful look. Maybe if the characters were their actual age in the movie, the movie would have done better.
I think there have been plenty of attractive Marks. I don't think anyone's arguing that you have to be ugly to be Mark. It's just that Oliver Thornton's Mark feels like he should be a model or something, personality and looks-wise.
It's not that Mark has to be ugly. In my opinion, Mark is a quirky, high enery, slightly geeky filmaker who is sort of a loner and is trapped in his work. A modern George from Sunday in the Park... or Leo Frank from Parade. Does this guy look like a loner or even a guy that would be a filmaker?
He looks like he would be a A and F model. I think it is that he is "too hot" for his personality to make any sense. Yes, there have been "pretty boys" as Mark, esp. Drew Lachey (which I also never understood), but I think this crosses the line...
And once again, why does he have a tiny camcorder. How could someone get lost in his work as a filmaker with a consumer home video camcorder? He is a filmaker who uses a film camera...
Maybe if the characters were their actual age in the movie, the movie would have done better.
Tired argument. I'm still waiting for someone to tell me where in the script, lyrics, or dialogue it says what their "actual" ages are (other than Mimi, or course).
the thing about Mark being "too pretty" isn't that he's too pretty or that all the other Marks haven't been... it's just that, well, this Mark looks like an aryan A&F model (the sweatshirt doesn't help.) NOT someone who's last name is Coen and who's family tells him "Mozel Tov."
Although Oliver Thornton looks to be one of the most beautiful males I have ever seen on a stage...the show looks horrific. Maureen looks like a Kit Kat Girl with a leather jacket and boots.
"Somethin's comin', I don't know what it is but it is gonna be great!"
uhh, i think Maureen forgot some of her costume backstage. Isn't Mimi supposed to be the S&M dancer?
<-- Gwen Stewart, SOLoist at the last show of RENT Cages or wings?
Which do you prefer?
