Why on earth is Broadway’s Best Shows writing reviews when it is owned by a Broadway marketing agency (Jim Glaub/Super Awesome Friends) and a Broadway producer (Jeffrey Richards) as a way to promote their own work?? Is this trying to be the old Did He Like It all over again?
Looks like they previously gave a Critics Choice to a play that both those men work on. I hope no actual publications are including this in review roundups.
Not terribly surprised by the review from Green, a man who seems like he would fret over whether he should have a piece of candy, and so the review seems like it has a subtext that he couldn’t bring himself to fully enjoy it.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
I will say none of the jokes the reviews have highlighted seem very funny.
And Newell’s song is good but it’s the vocals that make it work and make it a showstopper. Would love to see Newell’s cover or someone else to see how that changes things.

That's the thing with this show: there are so many jokes that even if 1/5 of them don't land, there's still plenty of other laughs. But the joke formulas that Green references DO become tedious rather quickly, but this team can't seem to kill their darlings. (And I say this as someone who mostly liked the show for what it is.)
Even the Green review ends on an affectionate near pull quote. All told, surely a nice consensus for a show that seems untethered to the moment. Perhaps that will prove an asset, ultimately.

At a minimum: Musical, Book, Score, Featured (whichever category Newell chooses to go in).
Beyond that, it COULD get any combo of the following, in order of likelihood: Direction, Orchestrations, Choreography, Actress, Sound, Lighting, Scenic. I don't really see any of the 3 guys getting into Featured Actor, unless they LOVE the show like with Paradise Sq last year. (edit: I think Durand, Cahoon, and Behlmann are equally good, though I suppose Durand gets the leg up if all are Featured, followed by Cahoon whose role is mostly jokes)
Newell and Horn are shoo-in for nominations after tonight, as is the show for Best Musical, I'd think? I'd love to see Durand recognized too.
I wonder how much say the critic at the NYT has in designating the "Critics Picks" because much of this reads like one, with a lot of obnoxious condescension from Green.
