Not really "bad buzz", but just a reality check. The whole enterprise needs more pizazz and spark. It's all a bit safe and the music is repetitive and elevator-ish.
That one he has is as bland as the rest of the show.
I totally disagree - "You Coulda Knocked Me Over With a Feather” is a wonderful song and Ghee stopped the show with it the night I saw it. Just terrific.

HUH, Bad buzz? This is the 1st week of previews 4 weeks more to go until opening -12/11 and the show has A LOT of buzz from what I'm hearing and that being positive so not sure why you're saying that because couple of people on BWW were not that impressed. Moving on...

I was initially going to see KA but after so-so reviews on this board, then glowing reviews of 'SLIH' I changed my mind. I was a HUGE fan of Drowsy Chaperone and Hairspray so I feel like I am the target audience of SLIH....seeing it Monday and I'll be sure to give a review here:)
Anyone win the digital lottery or get in-person rush tickets yet? Want to strike early while I can and bring as many friends to this show while it’s in previews.
I thought J Harrison Ghee, Natasha Yvette Williams and Kevin Del Aguila we’re the standouts too. I thought that they could have diversified the music a bit by inserting another number during the Mexico sequence. Many of the songs sound alike and I was happy when we got to "At the Old Majestic Nickel Matinee” because I needed a quieter moment. Give Del Aguila another number please.
I love Christian Borle but was expecting his Josephine to have better costumes, wigs and make-up. The dance numbers need tightening but overall I had a blast and will be recommending this to all. Lots of fun with a big orchestra and great Art Deco sets. I loved the train. Lighting effects here would probably enhance and improve.
Excellent medicine that pairs nicely with so much of the terrifically poignant drama available now.
Thanks to TDF for a fantastic seat in row C of the mezzanine.

So-so reviews for Kimberly Akimbo? That show has some of the most consistently glowing reviews from board members I’ve seen in a while, with only a couple dissenters. You’re basing your “glowing reviews” of SLIH on a small number of first preview reviews, about half of which are good and half are indifferent. Just say you wanted to see SLIH more, but let’s not pretend the reviews for it here have been unanimously great.
I think the whole point is that Josephine’s costumes and wig are supposed to be sub par to Daphne’s - which makes it funnier! And audience ate it up, especially when Sweet Sue kept making fun of her.
Another function of having Borle’s costumes and wigs deliberately bad is to lessen the reliance on the man in a dress as deception trope. His Josephine isn’t meant to be “passing” which often is where these lines blur and things get off track and offensive. Paired with Ghee/Daphne’s reclaiming of it all and settling into their identity because of it, it’s clear they’ve developed this with sensitivity and thoughtfulness to the contemporary sensibilities at play that other shows just ignored and didn’t bother with thinking critically about how they could make it work. Having two contemporary queer book writers in Lopez and Ruffin on this project has clearly been key to that. Do they get it right 100% of the time? Probably not, but the effort here is well beyond previous ones and 90-95% successful.
Color me impressed that the Shubert Organization (notoriously lead by outright relics) took the steps necessary. The gripes from people that will continue to bash any and everything without seeing the show should just be ignored. They make themselves obvious and it all amounts to clout chasing on the internet.
I rushed in person this morning, got there at 9:50 and there were probably 10-15 people ahead of me (I didn’t count). It sounded like all rush seats were full view in the balcony and a handful of partial view orchestra seats.

While these were some of the funnier jokes in the show (probably thanks to any punch-ups Amber Ruffin did to make Matthew Lopez’s book funnier), it does feel like it gets to have its cake and eat it too with the “man looks bad in a dress” trope compared to Ghee’s Daphne. You get one character who’s an absolute knockout from pretty much the second they put on the costume and no one ever says a word about how they do or don’t fit in, and then you get the other character who OBVIOUSLY looks like crap and gets to be the butt of more than a handful of jokes about their appearance. But because Daphne is going through a self-expression journey in the show, it builds itself a sort of armor against criticism of being “just another ‘man in a dress’ show.”

I am not the least bit surprised. That’s why I don’t post reviews for any of the shows I’ve seen here.
People don’t care to discuss - just attack, like what happened to Jordan Catalano.
Saw this last night via lottery win - as I posted earlier, my seat was in the rear side mezz. I don't think I missed anything but wow that balcony overhang is dreadful! I'd be upset if I paid $100+ to sit there, as lots of people around me clearly were.
Overall I liked it, didn't love it, but had a really fun time and do recommend that people check it out. I think this could be a big hit with the bridge and tunnel + tourist crowds. When it's good, it's really good. The chase scene toward the end of the show was one of the more fun/silly/campy moments I've seen on stage in a while (it's giving hardcore Scooby Doo realness).
The performances across the board were excellent. I'm thrilled for Adrianna Hicks - this is such a nice step up for her career and the audience was loving her. There are some real stand out numbers in the score and I look forward to hearing the eventual cast recording. Agree that the choreo needs some tightening, but they've already had to replace an ensemble member due to injury, so hopefully things fall into place as they settle into a rhythm.
The mezzanine appeared fully sold, and there was a palpable buzz as people were exiting the theater. I think this show could stick around for a little while!
Just left the matinee. It was fun but not a game changer by any means. The cast have a good time. It does feel like the show takes some time to build to the exciting moments. The first 45 min seemed to drag a bit for me but as soon as they arrived in San Diego everything seemed to perk up and after that I was charmed.
The set was somewhat disappointing to me and came across as cheap at times. The choreo does need to be tightened.
The actor playing Daphne and the actor playing the millionaire were fantastic and seemed to be having a ball. The jokes about Borle looking old were a hoot. I could have done with even more!
All in all a fun time at the theatre.
Side note: Casey Garvin is so ridiculously attractive that I swear I blushed whenever he was speaking.
