Because they were already on their way out. The picture I saw had the house lights up and the overhead lights on stage on. You could see the audience thru the curtains and I believe it was after the singing and people were exiting . Don’t know what you saw.

This is getting very funny."
Oh no, dont get me wrong. I dont think theres anyone who wants it more for nicole to win that tony than me. Ive seen the show in London and immediately booked a trip to see her again in nyc. But I saw a post from a cast member from behind the silver curtain and the theatre was literally half empty. Sad to say. Cant seem to find how to post the photo here."
It was posted it earlier in this thread.
First, I’d imagine some people already walked out. Second, it’s a random Wednesday matinee. Third, the theater is enormous. Fourth, the only swaths of empty seats I saw were in the rear mezzanine.
The grosses don’t lie.
I’ve been a longtime lurker on this board and I have to laugh at the Audra vs Nicole situation on here. It’s…wild, to put it kindly.
Listen Audra is a national treasure but this isn't a lifetime achievement award. Nicole gave the better performance this year.
I took a gander at several performances for the rest of the run (after reading that funny “stunt” thread about the cancellation) and I was shocked at how much availability there is, especially for the performances they added just a month ago.
I had no idea that the demand and hype for this died down so much since the holidays. Obviously there’s multiple factors (ticket buying trends have changed drastically, so many newer shows have started performances, show is closing anyways, etc) but damn.

Guys, I'm in doubt about buying front row balcony for $80 or try rush (I believe they are end of the first rows).
Anyone has a say in which one I could get a better view?

I’ve seen the show twice from front row balcony. The view is perfect. You don’t need to lean forward at all. I wouldn’t risk it, as rush can be all the way to the side, even if it’s technically “closer.”

I’ve seen the show front row center orchestra and front row mezz. I thought the front row mezz was actually pretty great. It was closer to the stage than I thought it would be and the screens make everything seem even closer.
I remember thinking that I could’ve sat a few more rows back and still would’ve been fine. But I did enjoy the front row and having no heads to block me. The leg room was also better in the mezz than in orchestra (or at least the very front row).

Am I supposed to be an Audra stan? Is my post taken to be trolling?

The reality is, in this intsance, it doesn't matter who gave the better performance--which, in this case certainly, is completely subjective. 1) The Tony voters have a tendency to shower Audra with awards. 2) Audra is not only playing the single most important female role in musical theater and following in the hallowed footsteps of Broadway legends, thus hitting a major career millestone, but 3) equally and maybe more importantly, she's breaking the color barrier for this role in the age of Trump. And 4) she's doing it in a show that will continue to run after the Tonys and which could use the box office boost from the win. So she's definitely getting this. It may be a bad call. It may be unfair. But it's hers.
I think saying anyone is definitely getting the Tony is foolish and shows your biases. There’s an argument to be made for Nicole’s chances vs. Audra’s, but other than a near-guarantee they’ll both be nominated (it’ll be a cold day in Hell if they’re not), everything is speculation.

Posting that Audra “will win” the Tony in a SUNSET BLVD-specific thread, yes. I’d call that trolling.
The award is hardly a lock for either of them. The nominations haven’t even been announced yet.

I didn't start the discussion. If this is your idea of trolling, you may want to look into this.

If we are being honest, there's almost no way she doesn't. Doesn't mean she should. I pointed out the perfect storm of why Nicole almost certainly will not win. Doesn't mean she shouldn't. She just, almost certainly, won't.

So now you have to start the discussion in order to be a troll? Sounds like only one of us is confused by the definition of trolling.
joevitus, this is what I'd say in response to your post and I'll add some additional comments:
Ultimately, I don't think it's a lock for Audra at all at this point. I personally think it's going to Nicole - one of the tests is that we just had the Audra Gypsy cast recording released and it seems like barely anyone is talking about it. It feels like the person most excited about it on this board is...well me. The narrative that Audra's voice isn't quite right for the role seems to be popping up more and more now, and you can also see on show score even some of the positive stars will sometimes suggest Audra's voice not quite right. I don't think this is the kind of praise that leads to a Tony Award - not when you have Nicole S's practically unanimous raves for her vocals.
It's possible that there might be some bitterness of the whole liking of a Russel Brand instagram - for example I can see there are some toxic reddit posts about this issue that won't go away and even hunter Ryan herdlicka posted (publicly!) on Facebook 'never forget' a couple days ago about this issue trying to destroy Nicole (Hunter - you describe yourself as a 'Broadway actor' on Instagram but you have been on Broadway once and 14 years ago, and while you pathetically try and destroy someone who is actually achieving great things unlike yourself, look around if Jonathan Groff can sit down and have a conversation with Nicole treating her as a human being, if Patti can give Nicole raves, and if even 'The View' co-hosts can defend Nicole from this treatment I think you can be a little less toxic yourself). But I get the sense that most Tony voters are more likely mature people not these young toxic people who have been taught to fight, divide, argue rather than get along so they get the dopamine rush of feeling like they are a morally virtuous crusader.
Ultimately, I think Nicole S will win because she (with Jamie Lloyd) have brought a brand new aesthetic and sound to Broadway, completely reinvented a show emphasising its most positive qualities and hiding/covering over the bad, and created exactly that kind of moment that Patti and George Clooney were describing in their interview where you get completely moved and transported into another dimension. Nicole isn't just giving a 'performance' this is actually a historic event - to me Audra feels like a Bernadette in Gypsy situation whereas Nicole is an Alice Ripley in next to normal, Christine Ebersole in Grey Gardens, Jennifer Holiday in Dreamgirls type situation. It's a 'best ever' type vibe and a perfect marriage of material to performer. Audra is fighting against the material and it works for me, but it doesn't work for everyone.
I think a Tony award should go to an actor/actress who transforms into a role, character, era, which has nothing to do with the performer him/herself. Portraying a different person. As it is written in the story and script. The direction of this version makes that impossible.
The worst person you know just made a great point.

Also Glenn Close when she won in 1995 was awarded the Tony weeks before she left. I remember the Sunday Times the week after had a 2 page spread celebrating their 7 awards and then a page later a full-page color Ad announcing Betty Buckley arriving in July

Audra will win because she is giving the better performance, and even if you don't believe that, she is doing the MUCH harder role and it's so much bigger and nuanced and well-rounded than what Nicole is doing. Nicole has to sing 2 songs basically that are not that hard (Glenn Close can sing them) and moved down a key at that. Then she just stands in the middle of the stage and does essentially nothing for an hour. Whereas Audra is working her ass off for nearly three hours, actually acting, and singing 70% of the score herself. Whether you like her voice in the part is not really relevant. She is doing so much more and it's just better. She's getting the award because there's no comparison.
Show me on the doll where Nicole's Norma hurt you LOL.
