I really thought this would be selling better .  I understand all the reasons it isn’t.  But I really thought this would be a hot ticket. Maybe if they had not waited this long to transfer and come in closer at the heels of its London success.

They’re still over three weeks away til their first preview and they just started marketing.  Paper flyers in the mail, subway posters, all sorts of other press.  It’s also a huge theatre to fill.

I know this was acclaimed in London and by many people on this board, but from my general purview it seems like people are still mixed on the concept (much in the same way that people were mixed on A Doll's House despite good reviews), dubious about Nicole Scherzinger's fit as Norma, and maybe even a little bit cautious about a raved London transfer after Cabaret.  Maybe it would've sold more tickets coming straight off the heels of the London production, but from what I've seen there was always a bit of skepticism regarding this version of Sunset.

This did not just start marketing.  I think the negative reception to Cabaret and the fact that people just don't buy tickets in advance like years past anymore has more to do with it.

I think the thing is that Nicole Scherzinger isn't really a huge name celebrity here. Known to a degree, sure. But not a name you build a "at last, come and see her live on stage" marketing campaign around, which is what they've been doing. This isn't a obvious slam dunk a la Bette Midler in Hello Dolly.

That being said, I would be surprised if it doesn't eventually become a major hot ticket. But part of me also wouldn't be shocked if it doesn't take off here in the same way.

I only occasionally watched Masked Singer, but I never saw her get up & perform with any contestants.  In hindsight that's probably something she should have tried to do on that show.

We just hit post-Labor Day when people start paying attention again. The people who are receiving that mailer are getting back from their Summer vacations, sending kids back to school and now starting to pay attention to other things. Around this time is also when shows start releasing seating holds, so there may be sections of seats popping up on the map that were previously held back for one reason or another. That said, it's baffled me why they chose this theater with the size of the St. James. I feel like they could've really packed 'em in in a 1,100ish seat house like the Broadhurst. But I guess since it's ATG, they were always going to put it in one of their own. It'll be good for them to have a smaller house back in rotation if BoM soon starts winding down.

It's always funny to me when people are like "THEY DIDN'T JUST START ADVERTISING!?!??!!" as though they aren't the most tuned-in, theater savvy people. People on this board do not realize they don't represent the general public and that's especially true when it comes to advertising. Sure, we've been seeing ads and social posts for it since it announced. They have to spend very little ad money on us for us to buy a ticket compared to the more general audiences that you have to build awareness the show is evening happening and then give them multiple touch points in most cases before they buy a ticket. As opposed to seeing 5+ shows a year, the vast majority of people seeing shows see maybe 2-3 and that's still high. They're more expensive and require different advertising tactics than those maybe we would be seeing otherwise. But long story short, no they have not been advertising at the clip they are now which is very standard. They're making as much noise as possible before they start performances. And they'll get it, it's the event of the Fall so we'll see how it all pans out.

Aside: my bet is that Joe starts on the roof under the sign for the title number, down through the theater, out the stage door, down the street a short distance, back in the front doors and into the auditorium.

Yes, as I said, they just started the real marketing campaign.  They did this for three months in London in a theatre less than 900 seats.  Quite different from the 9 months in a 1700 seat theatre in NY.  Lots more inventory to sell.  I just think expectations are a killer.  People went into in London expecting nothing.  By the time it crosses the pond, we’ve heard a lot about, we’ve seen images, clips, recordings, read reviews, and it won’t be as novel an experience for New Yorkers as it was for people in London.  I was also talking to a friend the other day, and I said it seems like Sunset is a must see, and he said I try not to see things I’ve already seen.  We did just have a great Sunset here a few short years ago with the incomparable Glenn Close.  And it sold well, lots of people saw it.

as far as the title number, we’ve already seen an image of Jamie Lloyd with a cameraman in Shubert Alley.  So I think it’s a good guess that Joe Gillis will be walking on the streets to Shubert Alley and then back?  If true, he will have to walk through Times Square or the new residences at the row hotel.

The song is only 3 minutes long, he can't go that far. And if he's walking from Shubert Alley to the St. James, he doesn't need to go into Times Square or over to 8th avenue at all.

At the start of the show, the year was projected onto the stage, high up on the left hand side, it said 1949.

Nope.  Sorry.  I received a flyer over 3 months ago.  I have also seen ads in a few travel magazines as well as video packages in the hotels .  They might be doing more.. but they have been advertising for a while and outside of our niche.  It just doesn’t seem to be selling like I thought it would.  I hope it does well.   I loved it.

Oh you’re right, I always think 44th is just a regular street, and confuse shubert alley with that breezeway at the Marriott.
I just received a flyer in the mail a few days ago.
the NYT was wrong about the time period.  They said it was modern day, they must have corrected themselves.

Shock of all shocks! Saying something that isn't true.

The Savoy Theatre has either 1132 or 1158 seats as the official site is showing 1132 for Mean Girls but bringing up the official site it lists 1158 as well. This would have been very easy for you to check but why would you as it probably wouldn't fit your narrative.

We're coming up in November, specifically to see Sunset Boulevard. Although I bought the tickets for this show when they first went on sale, this is the first time I've ever planned a trip to NY without having purchased all of my show tickets well in advance. I've still got multiple open slots on my itinerary, for two reasons:

1) I'm hoping against hope that Cats: The Jellicle Ball and/or Oh, Mary! will extend again.

2) Tickets, in general, are simply too expensive, and there aren't any other shows I'm sufficiently keen to see, to justify the prices.

Or maybe - and this is crazy, but go with me for a sec - you don’t know what you’re talking about? And should maybe stop speaking in absolutes about things that can be fact-checked?

He traveled rather far at the Oliviers in those 3 minutes. Thats not a short amount of time for someone who is moving the entire time. But we’ll see!

Personally, I think their best bet is to make use of the St James Roof or fire escape. Great opportunity for a moment I think can be cut for the show tbh
