Hey everyone!! I got engaged back in August and our wedding is going to be in October of 2013. My fiancé loves musicals just as much as I do and I am trying to think of a great first dance song for us. No Phantom of the Opera. I really wanted to dance to The Music That Makes Me Dance from Funny Girl. Any other thoughts out there? Thanks!!

"How Bought A Dance" from Bonnie and Clyde? I don't know when the CD is coming out but you can probably find it on YouTube.

My wife and I danced to Could I Have This Dance, from Urban Cowboy. However, we were married in 1985, long before the stage show.

I've always thought "All I Need is the Girl" could be made into quite a first dance number.

How about a showtune for the last dance?

"And I'm here!
Look who's here!
I'm still here!"

In my family it's become a tradition to use Jerry Herman's "Loving You". I don't know why; it's far from my favorite Herman ballad.

But if you're going to use "His Is the Only Music..." (one of my favorite songs), you might check out the Mimi Hines recording, if you can find it. I'm not saying she's "better than Barbra", just that there's a lushness to that recording you might like for your wedding. And it would give you a version fewer people have heard.

If you prefer a Streisand recording, she revisits the song on a later album with Kenny G's accompaniment. Yeah, I know it's heresy to suggest anything but the OBCR; yet Kenny G doesn't go overboard and, again, there's romantic quality that says "wedding" to me.

You've obviously never planned a wedding. Show tunes appropriate for a first dance It's never too early to start.

Not a showtune, specifically, but if I were getting married, I'd love to have my first dance to Patti LuPone's "Heaven."

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I was listening to Anything Goes on my way to work this morning and was thinking that "Easy to Love" could be a great song to dance to.

I just performed the first dance at my cousins wedding. She and her betrothed rearranged Brown's "Next Ten Minutes" replaced all the "Jamie"s with Ooooos and then took out some of the non-specific and self-depreciating dialogue that Kathy says. Also they changed the "I want to bear your child" to something less... high pressure. It was definitely a magical moment.

My parents used Bernadettes "Unexpected Song" FTP
Song and Dance. It's really a fantastic song. Congrats, by the way!

Unexpected Song is a great choice. Never thought of it.

"You Are Love" from Show Boat... I don't know how festive of a first dance song you want.

I like "Our Love Affair" by Judy Garland.

"Just in Time" from Bells are Ringing.

I like your imperturbable perspicacity.

Bernadette's rendition of "Happiness" is glorious. I highly recommend it.

Also, her rendition of "Something Good" is actually very good, too. (Or any version of that song-I love it.)
