Besides getting people who couldn't see it on Broadway to buy tickets for a tour stop, the Legally Blonde MTV recording promoted it to people in the UK and created a buzz for its opening in December. Even if Legally Blonde itself didn't do well in the States, it was a clever move - it's still easily available online, don't forget.
I think if it is released on DVD after the show closes, it would be fairly profitable. If released while it is still open, it will likely harm the already poor grosses.
TheatreFan, I am English! I'm not talking about it showing on MTV, I'm talking about it being available to watch online all over the world. Although I am sure the fact it's a musical version of Legally Blonde is the main attraction for Brits buying tickets (and possibly Sheridan Smith for the BBC3 generation), a lot of theatre lovers and others besides, like my best mate, would never have thought about going to see it (I certainly hadn't) before seeing the MTV broadcast.
I was so snobby and wouldn't see it when I was in NY a couple of years ago, but after watching it online I couldn't wait for it to come to the UK - the songs are immensely catchy and it's very funny. I certainly would be up for watching a televised version of Shrek after being so impressed with Legally Blonde.

very happy if it's going to be released on DVD!! and excited that Johnny got brought back for the filming night.. I would've been really dissappointed if they filmed it without him
Where is the official link saying it will air on TV or they will release a DVD? Everyone is jumping to the conclusion when there could be other reasons for taping. I am not saying people are incorrect, but I am one of those people who would like to see an official source.

^I'm one of those people as well. Though I do like to hope, and I hope it's some sort of public release. I really don't see any other explanation for everything (Invite only, John T returning for one night, video trucks + equipment, Dreamworks' seemingly endless supply of money to throw at a floundering Shrek). Though there is a gut feeling that it won't amount to anything exciting =(
Hey, ya never know... Those tix showed up on Craig's List, first of all, and second of all, you never know who might be lurking among these boards! I'm just really curious is all.
"Of all the shows that could be taped for television, WHY are they picking this piece of junk?"
I agree with you but . . . . I can see this being a successful direct-to-video affair with perhaps a healthy run on premium cable. Family friendly with an established brand.
Was at the taping and I wish I had some sort of news, but not even the staff was telling anybody what was going on. Was really surprised that even when Jason Moore took to the stage at the beginning to welcome the audience that he didn't let on to why it was being filmed.
Hmmmm......how many other ways could they make money from the show besides the tour and releasing the rights? It sure does seem like there's something going on with the taping!
Looks like they are releasing a DVD. I wonder what they mean by "unique packaging." I'm excited, it's cool that they think this is a good idea, since it works out well for me, anyways! 'Shrek the Musical' headed for DVD release
Shrek's nowhere near my favorites from this past season, but I'm all in favor of shows getting filmed. I might pick this up when it's on sale or something.

I wonder if they'll have an interactive packaging? I know some Costco boxed DVD sets have features where you can hit a button and a song or phrase comes out of a little speaker...
