truly weird, they were really banking on winning
Oh my god, that press release. They are really pumping this show up. They act like its the second coming of Christ. I really enjoyed it but I don’t think it’s as important as they seem to think it is.
And they’re replacing the lead actress who was remarkable and Tony nominated. Not sure I get the logic in that.
They had planned on winning.
It's only an 8 week return engagement, but the producers were clearly thinking they were winning last night.
Joaquina Kalukango is in Paradise Square, I believe. So she wasn't available. I agree that she was remarkable.
It's coming back because they received SVOG money.

I haven't seen the play, so I can't speak to it's quality. However, it seems a bit optimistic to re- open a show that had trouble filling the Golden (or I assume it did- it closed pre-COVID) into the August Wilson (420+ more seats). I realize small houses may not be available, but still- kinda hard to imagine its going to fill the theatre.
They closed before the pandemic. Why did they get grant money? I guess I don’t understand the program.
The tweets I’m seeing today about the show losing last night make me both laugh and roll my eyes. People are saying it losing to “The Inheritance” shows there’s no diversity on Broadway. A Latino won for a show about gay men. You may not like the kind of diversity it represents, but that’s another issue.

I haven't read through this whole thread but is there talk of it being filmed at all? It seems like the kind of play that would be good on film as well.
The cost of filming a show is very very high and unless something happens where the demand is suddenly also very high and the show turns a profit, I just can’t see it happening. But who knows - there might be a company who wants to put the money in. Stranger things have happened.

Yes, a gay LatinX wrote, and won for a 7 hour show about privileged gay white people doing privileged gay white things. Truly groundbreaking. Insert even bigger eye roll here.
Do artists of color only have value if their art is exclusively about their own oppression? Seems weird to only celebrate the diversity that looks like what you think diversity looks like.
Mr Lopez is the first Latine to win for Best Play which he has in two countries, along with many more accolades as well. It's an accomplishment, it's important and regardless of what he chooses to write about, it is still a big deal that he won last night.

OMG aren’t white people just the absolute worst?!?!
This is a two month engagement and they are promising 10,000 tickets for $39 through out the run. I can't see how this will make any money, and I doubt Jeremy is reopening this out of the kindness of his heart, so the only logical reason is that they will be filming this.
Lopez went on and on last night about how black/brown people have stories to share blah blah blah … and I’m like bruh, you literally wrote and shared the whitest show I’ve seen in a minute on Broadway - and that’s beside the fact that the only POC people that were represented in his cast (that stayed on stage) were a Latino and Black dude who made funny stereotypical quips about voguing….. oh ok
Sounds like you mad. He's a Tony Award Winner. Be happy for him or GTFO. Write a play about about gay POC yourself if you feel that that's lacking in theater today.
Thanks, broheim.

THE WORST but almost as bad are POC like that horrible Matthew Lopez who have the nerve to write an epic 7 hour work but NOT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OR ABOUT THE SUBJECT I WANT HIM TO! THE NERVE!
ppl have just gone and lost their minds.

Perfection.
It’s funny that you’re calling me out about being mad, when literally this entire thread has turned into people being “mad” or perplexed about Slave Plays return. Why can’t you follow your own words and just be happy for this show, sis?

Not one reply suggests anyone is "mad."

Right? If you want to see a certain type of play on Broadway, and it’s not there, then get your little pen and paper and word processing program out and write what you want to see!
I saw Slave Play almost two years ago, and I’m having a hard time even remembering what it was about! Now, to be fair, if someone gave me a free ticket, and I had seen all other available shows on Broadway, and Slave Play was the only available show to see, I would probably see it again. I mean, after two years of not seeing it, and people still talking about it (and after the George Floyd issues of last year) with an open mind, maybe it would have a different impact on me now than it did two years ago. As a theater patron, I’m very open to new ideas and thinking about things from a different perspective (isn’t that one reason we go to the theater? To have our minds expanded and see things from different perspectives?)
I recently saw Pass Over and comparing Pass Over to Slave Play, I liked Pass Over better. Now seeing Pass Over was after a year and a half of no theater on Broadway and we were all wearing masks, and it’s post George Floyd, so maybe I did see Pass Over differently than I did see Slave Play which was two years ago Pre-Covid and pre racial unrest. So maybe seeing Slave Play now, would be different than seeing it in 2019??
Not even comparing the themes in “Pass Over” and “Slave Play” but the former really sat with me for a while after I saw it while the other was, for me, a forgettable show that I felt existed to just try to shock and appear more important than it actually was.
