But he didn win. He still couldn't even be nominated?
I really hope they keep some of the straight couples. It seems pointless to me to "explore the issues of commitment in a fresh way" by just turning everyone gay.
Another revival of this?
But it's GAY.
And I really hope he does this with all his musicals.
If he were to play the role, he wouldn't be eligible again.
When Cabaret is on back Broadway, Alan Cumming won't be eligible for a Tony. That's the way it works.

That would certainly be quite the magic spell on the Baker and his "Wife" at the end of Act 1 if he did that

How about Back Side Story?
But Cumming win the Tony, Esparza didn't.
Besty, you can't come up with anything for ASSassins? :P
But Cumming win the Tony, Esparza didn't.
Doesn't matter. It doesn't even matter if you're nominated the first time.
If you're eligible once for playing a role, you can't be eligible for the same role again.
And ASS assin's doesn't need much help, does it?
Can you really not be re-nominated for the same role? Even in an entirely different production, playing the part in an entirely different way?
I understand Alan Cumming not being eligible again, but if Raul were to play this revised Bobby I think it would be stupid to ignore him.
I agree it's stupid. I always just assumed that if that were to happen, then I course they'd be eligible.

Raul wont be in this production so why are we even arguing about this!
Because its wing used a an example to ask a question about Tony rules.
That ok with you?
In the interests of clarity, (not that I ever doubt best12!), I just looked up the Tony rules and regulations on their website, and it only says if you've actually won before for repeating a role are you ineligible.
Also, in this case, Raul wouldn't be "repeating" a role, it would be a total re-interpretation.

omg you guys.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to My Forearm
I wish them luck with this adaptation, but the Gaying of Company seems to be a Pandora's box, like the Spanishification of the Shark dialogue: once you make this gay, where do you stop?
If Bobby is gay, what is Marta? And what about her theory of the tight asshole. Is that all of a sudden sexual?
If Bobby is gay, what is April? And is he still going to Barcelona? (And what male name does he mix up with April if not "Ju-u-une"? Au-gust? No gay man is called "August" anymore.)
If Bobby is gay, does he still think about marrying Amy?
And what of all the girls' names in "Someone Is Waiting"? "A Susan-sort-of-Sarah, a Jenny-ish-Joanne..."
And what does Joanne (or is it just Joe now?) sing? "Here's to the gay boys who brunch?" Or does he still sing about the girls on the go? Or does he use "girls" and "ladies" as Queenish metaphors for guys?
And, please, spare me the Ladies Who Lunch scene in a dated gay "discotheque" like those horrible scenes in the American version of Queer As Folk.
And is Bobby gay in 1971? Or gay today?
And what the hell happens to "Have I Got a Girl for You"? Please tell me the men don't sing a song mistakenly thinking he's straight?
I do hope they let a man dance Tick Tock. There are several very eligible candidates out there...
Completely agree, PalJoey.
I'm sure Sondheim must have some very clear ideas if he's actually onboard with this, but I'm really surprised to hear that he's doing it. It seems a little gimmicky for him...
This is killing me. I wanted to mount a gay version of COMPANY in Los Angeles this year. AAAAAAAAAA!
