TOP HAT beat THE BODYGUARD for Best New Musical.
I have an inkling that we'll be seeing it play Broadway this Spring...
(THE BODYGUARD, too.)
Lol....I was just looking at their website. It certainly looks stunning.
My wife and I saw this in London last summer and we thought it was thoroughly entertaining. Good ole fashion fun show.
I saw it with the original cast, I haven't been back since but it is a beautiful production. Their performance on the Oliviers tonight was head and shoulders above anything else. It is just a good old fashioned musical, I know you've had Nice Work, and even Anything Goes recently but I think this would go down really well.
Just watched the trailer on their website... This looks like good old fashioned splashy fun.
maybe Top Hat & The Bodyguard shouldn't compete in the same Broadway season. Have Top Hat arrive by the spring 2014 and Bodyguard waits until Fall 2014(giving Headley a long rest).
TOP HAT and THE BODYGUARD are very different shows. Why does it matter if they are competing against each other?
if The Bodyguard wants a chance to win some Tonys. Top Hat just beat them out in London, so why won't Broadway be the same?
I saw this earlier in the year and it was incredibly enjoyable. I found it have similarities Nice Work, Crazy for You, and even Guys and Dolls. It was very theatrical...it was big, bright, loud, and showy and the cast and creators knew it. I saw it not long after Gavin Lee joined the cast and I was really impressed by his work. He combines singing, dancing, and acting very naturally.
I saw this when it first opened and thought it was average, at best! If you look at what it's up against, winning best new musical this year is no big achievement.
Not to mention, everything that this show was trying to do, Singin' In The Rain did it all better!
When I first saw the movie back in high school, I thought this REALLY needed to be on stage. I was so excited that it was turned into a stage musical, but upset it wasn't here. I hope it makes its way!
I saw the original cast in London last May, and it was my least favorite show of 9 that I saw on that trip. I thought it was thoroughly boring.
What was the CABARET that Will Young was nominated for? Had it been running for awhile or what? Didn't they just have a revival not too long ago?
Loved this when I saw it last August, a hugely enjoyable night of theatre.
THE BODYUGARD is definitely coming here next season in the spring of 2014, produced by the Nederlanders. I believe the plan is for it to go into rehearsal in late January, begin previews in late February, and open in early April.
Any rumors where The Bodyguard is going? I assume Headley will transfer with it but what about Lloyd Owen? If he doesn't I wouldn't might Patrick Wilson taking the role.
ucj, the most consistent rumor has been The Marquis, which would line up perfectly. JEKYLL & HYDE will shutter by the end of the summer, a holiday show can take the theater for the fall, and then THE BODYGUARD will open in the spring.
Heather Headley is definitely coming over with the show. I doubt Lloyd Owen will, though. The role of Frank is pretty thankless, but it's also something any leading man over here could easily play. Besides, Owen didn't get the type of reception to classify him as someone special. I think it would be fun to reunite Headley and Adam Pascal personally, but the role is almost a non-singing one, so any actor with a dramatic presence could play it.
The Marquis? Boring. I haven't seen the show and didn't really look into the reviews, with that being said is the show ready to transfer or does it need some work before it does?

The two shows are so different I don't think they will care too much about being in the same a broadway season. Both shows are looking at crossing over. Bodyguard is more confirmed than Top Hat, although Nederlander are interested in bringing both over, I did hear Top Hat was being considered for The Richard Rogers a while ago.
I think Top Hat would do well on Broadway.
It certainly surprised a lot of people how long it has been running in the West End. I thought it wouldn't have even seen 2013. Personally I thought it was a great show.
From what I saw in the trailers and videos on there website, if it came to Broadway, I'd be there in a heartbeat!
This show beats the hell out of "Nice Work." It's simply a great night in the theatre. I loved it.
I always thought the current West End cast is being primed for Broadway, with Gavin Lee, well known from Mary Poppins and Broadway regular Kristen Beth Williams.
if The Bodyguard wants a chance to win some Tonys.
I don't think anyone would count on them possibly winning. I have a feeling this show will be happy if they just get nominations.
I would love to see Top Hat come over-with Gavin Lee. He was amazing in Mary Poppins (I saw him both times I saw the show-he's fabulous). His charisma is just infectious. I'd like him back on Broadway. The Rodgers would be a good house for it. Hoping they head across the pond.
