"Take Me or Leave Me", "Without You", "Your Eyes" and "I'll Cover You (reprise)" from RENT, "Mein Herr" from CABARET, "I'm Going Home" from ROCKY HORROR, "I See Through You" and "Il Adore" from TABOO, and "I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love" from BOY FROM OZ are the only ones I can think of that haven't been mentioned yet. There is probably a reason for that...most aren't really "goodbye" songs and few are ballads, but these came to mind :)

"Little Known Fact: Peter Allen wrote"Once Before I Go" for Ann-Margret :) "

*************************

Yes, we've read that it was written as the goodbye song for Ann-Margret's concerts. The last lines were written much later, after Peter's companion Greg Connell died.

Ann-Margret did see THE BOY FROM OZ - and hearing someone else sing Peter's song for her in a tribute musical to Peter must have been quite sentimental for her.

ONCE BEFORE I GO became the show's eleven o'clock number and drew standing ovations regularly during the show's run. But nothing can beat Hugh's rendition of the song on the closing performance. It didn't seem as if it were "Peter Allen" singing the song - rather it became Hugh Jackman's farewell song to Broadway!

According to the glorious Carol Channing, "So Long Dearie!" isn't a GOODBYE song at all. It's a F__k You song. Yup, that's the way she phrases it!

"My Friend" from THE LIFE
"Before I Gaze at You Again" from CAMELOT

Not from a Broadway musical, but "It's Time We Said Good-bye" from "The Muppets Take Manhattan" always tears me up.

Praying Decca Broadway will put "Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope" on CD!

It's not from Broadway, but "Saying Goodbye" from The Muppets Take Manhattan is seriously one of the most sad and beautiful songs I've ever heard.

Just recently, I've encountered 'Wicked Little Town (Tommy Gnosis Version)' from 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch.' Good, good song.

"'But do you really mean, sir,' said Peter, 'that there could be other worlds --all over the place, just round the corner-- like that?'

'Nothing is more probable,' said the Professor..."

The most obvious choice for me is "Simple" from NINE.

"Simple are the ways we say goodbye..."

I agree with cturtle "Everytime..." and chrislovesshows "I'll be seeing you"(Chris-- great icon BTW)

But my fave is "From This Day On" from Brigadoon. Breaks my heart, and Lerner and Loewe never sounded so good.

"Grand Knowing You" from She Loves Me

It's been grand knowing you
Grand knowing you
Grand being your friend.
You've been kind, loyal, and so generous
Right down to the end.
Please don't grieve watching me leave
That would be much too painful to stand.
It's been fun
Now I must run
But it's been grand, perfectly grand!

Ilona, farewell cherie, be brave.
Chin up, it's been sublime.
You mustn't waste a precious moment over me.
You don't have time.
Just remember if you lonely or blue,
There's a hollow in my pillow for you.

And Sipos, what can I say?
Ah, Sipos.
No tears be gay, you know old friend
I'm in your debt.
I owe you more than I can possibly repay.
I won't forget.
Give your wife a little kiss from Kodaly.
I've never met her, but I will
By and by.

Though I hate leaving you,
Hate leaving your warm intimate club.
It's a small pleasure but I'll treasure
Each warm intimate snub.
It's been grand let me say
And let me say "Au revoir" not goodbye
For it's grand knowing you'll all be working
For your friend,
Kodaly!

Hard to Say Goodbye - Dreamgirls
Goodbye, My Love - Ragtime
So Long, Fare Well - Sound of Music
I Have to Go - Toni Childs

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.
